I didn't know I had this feature....when I do my videos in my kitchen....the voices bounces a lot. I just went to clip and applied it and it helped so much....thank you for putting this info out.
I recently shot some video with a large amount of echo, I can’t wait to try this and see how much it can pull out. Thank you for the video, I had no idea this existed before today!
This is amazing. When I record at home, I am constantly aware of my neighbour upstairs walking around or cars driving past my home and it being picked up, but this new update is fantastic. It just helps with improving the audio and the post production process. Thanks for letting my know about FCP's new update! 😊
You’re welcome! I know what you mean. I often have to wait for lawn mowers or leaf blowers before recording and it drives me nuts! 😂 Now at least if that lawn mower starts mid-recording, I can probably get away with finishing the shoot. So glad this video is going to help you out! 😄🤙🏼
I volunteer for a film school and I can say that the #1 problem for students is sound. They always seem to devote much less attention to sound during the shoot and end up spending an excessive amount of time trying to fix it in post. This voice isolation feature is my favorite of all FCP updates and I use it always. In fact, I think the whole suite of Logic filters are really powerful. I have used the background noise reduction filter along with voice isolation fairly effectively for really noisy audio. Thanks for another great video.
Yeah most people forget about sound and it’s 50% of a film! The voice isolation feature is easily one of my fave new features too 😄🙌🏼 Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
What's amazing is that I used Voice Isolation on a recording I made of an instrumental guitar concert with no speaking, and it cleaned that audio up, too!
Very cool Brad! I’ve been using this lately to recover voice from bad tracks. It can’t recover popping or clipping, but fantastic and way better than noise reduction which always seemed to change the pitch of my voice. Great video!
Thanks so much 😄🙏🏼 Yeah it definitely makes a huge difference compared to FCP’s built in noise reduction. For popping and clipping I still use iZotope RX. Appreciate you watching 👊🏼
Yeah there is a lot to be said about keeping things more natural for sure. These examples are obviously pretty extreme examples 😄 Thanks for watching! 🙏🏼
Finally. This is so useful. I normally have the audio exported to ableton and use a lot of plugins. I’m watching this on the phone and the result is impressive. Tks for this tip ☺️
I am aware of the importance of good and clear audio, but in post I find it difficult to get it right. This video helps me step up my game, I hope 🤔 Thanks for sharing, Brad. 🙏
You’re welcome Gert-Jan. If you have a decent audio clip to begin with, some voice isolation, an EQ and a compressor should get you pro-sounding audio 😄👌🏼
Outside it might reduce the sound but that type of isolation your getting depends on how far you are from the camera, which mic your using. Any time I use that feature it sounds processed. Maybe 25% might not sound as processed.
Yeah there are loads of variables that will determine the outcome. There is another cool AI tool that might help you clean up your audio (depending on your circumstances), called Adobe Podcast. It's free. I spoke about it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/SDJjQe9tXkw/v-deo.html
I had some cellphone interference in the example from Prague which it did a good job with. As far as static goes, I have tried it and it does a pretty good job maxxed out. It gets rid of all the static between words but some of it creeps back in sometimes when speaking. So, not perfect but definitely improved. For really bad static I still default to using the declicker from iZotope.

@@Brad_West Great just updated and using the audio thing for a job that I wasn't quite happy with and has really worked well, so glad I found your video... Now I have to get Film Convert to work with the new version of fcpx... Know how to do that by any chance??
Hi Brad, I only get the voice isolation option on stereo tracks. If the track is switched to dual mono, the option disappears. I have to click on each mono track individually to activate it.
Yeah if you set the audio to dual mono, FCP sees that as two separate tracks and therefore analyzes them separately for voice isolation as well. If the two tracks aren’t identical it’s probably a good thing, because you’d want FCP to analyze individually for best results 😄👍🏼
I actually used a template from Envato Elements to create that. Envato is now offering 7 day free trials though, so you can sign up and get an audio waveform visualiser template for free: bit.ly/Envato7DayFreeTrial 😄👊🏼
If the background music is soft enough compared to the dialogue it will remove quite a bit of the music. If the music is loud, then it won't give the best results 😄
Hmmm, I don't think you can. It would be nice if you were able to "invert" the voice isolation effect to output what is essentially being removed instead.
Hi Brad. Quick question. Is there a way to get this to work on dual mono clips? It only seems to work on a clip that's configured as stereo. Sometimes when using an iPhone or GoPro, the volume will be much louder on one channel like the left and the right will be very soft. When this happens, I change it from stereo to dual mono in the audio configuration settings. The problem is the voice isolation options disappear, and the only way to get it to work is by clicking on and applying it to each channel in the audio configuration setting, but it sometimes sounds funny. A workaround is to make a compound clip from the "dual mono" clip, but that's kind of a pain if there's a bunch. Any thoughts? I hope I explained that well enough to understand. Haha.
Aloha Brad, just watched your vid on voice isolation. I have FCPX 10.6.5 and can't find the feature or any of the other things I saw on your vid. Did they remove them or am I just not clicking on the right icon?
