Jack Skellington is voiced by BOTH Danny Elfman, AND Chris Sarandon. Elfman was hired to do the music for the movie (and has frequently collabed with Tim Burton, like in the 80's Batman movie) and Elfman recorded the singing for Jack before the dialogue. Burton tried to do the VA dialogue for Jack, but didn't have the acting chops for a lead role, so Sarandon was hired because his speaking voice matched well with Jack's singing voice done by Elfman.
I had a crush on Jack in Middle School. I can’t help it. He’s funny, smart, charming, whimsical, and deliciously dramatic at the perfect time. He so expressive with his body movements and he has class
Tim Burton wrote the poem and doodles that inspired the story, and it was a bunch of his friends who wrote the scripts, songs, and rest of character designs. I believe that's the gist of his contribution.
This is not accurate. Tim wrote the story and characters/character designs. Danny wrote the songs and he and Tim are close friends. Tim was Head Producer and creative consultant. The ONLY reason he didn't direct it is because he was working on Batman at the time. So he had to settle for being Producer. But he and Henry were also pretty close so he didn't mind. You can watch the story about how this movie came to be on Netflix's show: The Holiday Movies that Made Us (or something like that).
It's absolutely not true that Tim Burton had the bare minimum to do with this movie. He came up with the story and characters, he did the concept art and story boards, he was a producer and made the deal with Disney to make the movie happen. The only reason he couldn't direct it himself was because he had already already committed to direct Batman Returns.
@@PlugInKali he was on set frequently. There's lots of pictures of him on set, whenever he would get done with Batman returns. Again, go watch The Holiday Movies that Made Us. He was a Lot more involved than you or OP are saying. 🙄
I don't know if you're into music theory at all, but this film actually dabbles in it a little, and you can hear it in Jack's lament, and Sally's song. There's what's called the Phrygian stank note that they both hit when they sing. It's basically a note that sounds slightly off from the rest of the notes being sung in a lyric. It's used to show their connection, even on the most basic musical level.
This film is an amazing portrayal of character development of someone who was learning to be better after realizing he had done and encouraged cultural appropriation. By the end of the film, he gained more appreciation to his own culture, and how to properly celebrate other people's culture and custom.
Omg Lakia, you should watch Over the Garden Wall for Halloween. It's a 10 episode mini series that only runs about 2 hours long, but it's got the perfect Halloween/Autumn vibes.

I know someone else already said this but actually Jack is voiced by Chris Sarandon (who is probably most well known for his role as Humperdinck in The Princess Bride) with his singing by Danny Elfman. Chris was hired because Danny’s attempts at the speaking parts were “wooden”; Danny was so upset because of how much he related to Jack/poured himself into the songs, that he refused to work with Burton for a while. Also, Chris Sarandon can actually sing and he does Jack’s voice for literally all things Jack appears in even now. Theme parks/voice overs, video games (Kingdom Hearts series, Oogie’s Revenge etc), mobile ringtones, literally you name it and that’s Chris Sarandon. He can’t even do the Jack voice at comic cons because Disney have copyrighted his voice 😭 but he’s awesome and I even got a lovely pep talk from him on cameo, and he’s so enthusiastic about Jack as a character and about the film. Also Lock, Shock and Barrel (the demon trick or treater kids) are my favourite characters and I have a tattoo of them 😂

The Disney opening is new, it had a different one on the VHS. I think it was Touchstone, cause Disney thought the movie was too dark back then. But when they saw the kids liked it (they saw the profits 👀), they claimed it back. 😂
Yeah I always thought that was a total act of cowardice. They didn't want to release it as a Disney picture, but once it came out and was popular, they slapped their name all over it.
So I forgot who also worked mainly on this movie, but the reason why Tim Burton didn’t work on a lot of it is because he was making another movie in the process, however in my opinion he still is considered the producer and probably the Director, just because he’s the one who invented every single character, he’s the one who invented the story, he is the one who invented a look at everything and the feel of everything, he also wrote the book many years before this movie, so he in my Pinyan is the original creator of everything, but the man who worked on it a lot in my opinion would more likely be considered an assistant of his. Because Tim Burton will find it difficult to work on two movies at once, so it would make sense
One of my favorite Stop-Motion films, even when I was a Kid up until 2002/2003 I didn't know _Nightmare Before Christmas_ was a Disney movie cause it came out through Touchstone Pictures (which at the time I didn't know Touchstone was a subsidiary of Disney) and surprisingly when I saw Jack Skellington in a commercial for Kingdom Hearts I said _"WAIT! Nightmare Before Christmas is Disney?!?"_ Also while yes Tim Burton's name is in the title of the film as he did created the characters and the original poem along with producing the film, the film is actually directed by Henry Selick who would later direct _James and the Giant Peach_ and _Coraline._ Even I didn't realize that Jack Skellington was in _James and the Giant Peach_ as the Pirate Captain when I watched the film again for the second time, considering James was my first stop-motion film I watched before Nightmare Before Christmas.
The sequel should be two Jehovah's Witnesses knocking on Halloween Town's door to tell Jack what Christmas actually is, inspiring Jack to find Christ... And kidnap him 🤣
11:54 I have a theory about the "delinquent demon kids." Their names are Lock, Shock, and Barrel. I have a name theory: Thier names emulate the saying "Lock, stock, and barrel," meaning "Everything" because those are all the parts of a musket. However, I think the reason it's "Shock" instead of "Stock," is because their names are also supposed to evoke the parts of an insane asylum, or a prison for capital criminals. I.e., being locked up in a room for solitary confinement, electroshock "therapy" or possibly even the electric chair (Jack was seen lighting one up with Christmas lights earlier), and finally, Barrel as in either a straitjacket or the stocks, a torture/punishment device used for extreme lawbreakers.
Fun fact: in the soundtrack and book version of the ending it’s said Sally and Jack got it on and somehow made half-skeleton-half-doll babies. I don’t want to know how that’s possible. Why, Tim Burton, why’d you write that?!
Actually, Danny Elfman did the singing voice, while the actor who did the speaking voice is the one who did Prince Pumpernickel from the Princes Bride.
Tim Burton says the inspiration for the original poem was seeing Halloween merchandise in a store being torn down and replaced by a Christmas display and the juxtaposition of seeing ghouls and goblins with Santa Claus and his sleigh sparked his imagination.
