  • Suspect a faulty throttle position sensor for engine problems? Look no further. In this video I will explain how a (TPS) Throttle Position Sensor works, how to test one, and also open one up to see what is inside. The sensor being tested in this video is a 3 pin sensor.

Excellent video on how to look for dead spots in your TPS. Not all vehicles are the same, the TPS can have a different expected voltage range depending on vehicle. Not all TPS tolerances are between 0V-5V. Consult a workshop manual for the correct specifications for your vehicle year/model/engine configuration. The TPS design and expected values can change per year on the same model. Always, always, look up the correct specifications for your specific vehicle. Great video.

And now it's back. Is that even possible??? I'll do it myself this time. Can you tell me what kind of tools I need to buy?? Cuz I'm sure not going back to a"Joe" and investing in the right tools sounds like a + + to me. Seems like with a little knowledge and a few bucks$$ I'd be better off buying and watching videos. 2001 Grand Prix with a 3.1-liter motor, started idling high after good and warmed up. No codes at the time.
When motor would idle too high, 4T65E trans would shift super late under light throttle. About 25 MPH and 2,500 RPM before it would hit 2nd. gear. Was OK the next day. 3rd. day, high idle and late shift again! This time the check engine light did come on. Code P0121. Scanner TPS angle percentage at idle shows 0 sometimes, and sometimes 0.39% and ~ 100% at WOT. One time while sitting there idling fine, ~ 700 RPM, all at once the idle kicked up to ~1,300 RPM all by itself. I looked at the scanner, now TPS angle percentage went up to 2.75%.
From my readings it looks to me like the sensor IS receiving the 5V reference, and my ground in good, and my reference voltage is changing and being sent back to the ECM. My voltmeter is at my buddy's garage right now, so I could not do the voltage testing at the TPS connector, as you have outlined.
I'm ready to take a chance based on my findings, and just install a new TPS.
    What do you think?

Mine is a 2003 V6/2.7L....same car basically. Crankshaft sensor: raise front of vehicle on stands, remove the long plastic shield under radiator, then reach up into the block facing the cooling fan. One bolt holds it in place. The camshaft sensor is on the drivers side of the engine, between the throttle body and ignition coil packs. Be sure to watch today's video below and share. Thanks!

On my 1987 Chevy Celebrity the TPS went bad . There was also another code for the MAP sensor . What happened was the TPS pulled down the voltage to the MAP sensor . If you check a wiring diagram , they use the same line . Not all cars are same , but it is not uncommon to have them both on the same line . In general , if a component goes bad and there are other items on the same circuit , it can pull down the voltage that supplies other items , depending on how it malfunctions .

  • @LG-zd1um

Great video. I have a 1997 Saturn SL1with a standard 5 speed trans. The idle would sometimes go to 2000 to 2500 rpm when rolling to a stop with the clutch pushed down then would come back to norm 750 ish rpm. I pulled off the throttle body and removed the tps and iacv to clean a ton of carbon off the throttle body. I also replaced the iacv with an $8 ebay one, thinking that was originally causing the high idle problem. There was never a cel on. When I put it back together I put the tps on and had to twist it to get the screw holes to line up and it felt crunchy like I hyperextended the spring. It turned on the cel with code po122 and runs bad with high idle. I installed a new Walker tps and there is no change other than it loops at idle when the rpm comes down. My code reader is not able to clear the po122 code. I checked voltage with connector disconnected and I get 5.02v on one wire and .03v on other. I back probed with it plugged in to sensor and get 5.08v on one and the other shows .15v at idle and 3.94v at wot. I thought it might be the plug so I poked the volt meter lead in the connecter points and tried to push them closer together but No change in voltage readings. Advice please?

I finally understood how it works lol what a great explanation and demonstration. I highly suspect my TPS is failing. Whenever I floor the gas pedal, the rev goes up but the car doesn't move. Transmission shifting is terrible. The gas pedal sometimes stops working completely! If I understand it well, if I run these tests in my car and the TPS is really faulty, I should be able to "floor" the gas pedal and see the voltage not going up, right? Thanks for the video!

What if it shows 3.5 but when I stick a needle in it it on shows
. 85 then it goes up smooth when you turn the throttle body to 3.5

i had checked my TPS offline of course i put 5V supply , when i rotate the throttle
the voltage at signal wire moves slowly up until i get ~4.5 voltage and back down
when i slowly release the throttle.looks my tps is okay right? . but when i put back the TPS in the engine.I noticed that
the signal does not increasing or not giving me a reading when we press on the gas pedal while the engine is running? so i still get hesitation . can you advise your comment here. thanks

@electronicsNmore I got six prong connector I have only one Wireless reading. 5.01 I have two wires that's reading. 0.80 I have one wire that's reading 0.02 I have one Wireless reading 3.54 1 wire reading 1.46 How far is pressing the gas pedal down? Don't any of these numbers move? I'm only I'm only testing this. Because I have a loss of power. An acceleration I I've had. Several different codes right now I have one for the cram shaft position sensor mass flow air sensor no leakage So I just thought the check the throttle body. Does these numbers tell me anything?

They always say the sensor “ gives out a signal “ makes it sound like a radio transmitter or something. It’s just a variable resistor that changes in resistance according to position

06 Nissan Sentra 1.8 L having problem with it . Took it to " mechanic " and he said throttle body needed to be replaced which i did get him to do that . So now a few weeks later still not fixed . What it's doing is after starting won't rev up stays low even flooring gas pedal . Even loses power while running a few times . Idle fluctuates a lil at red light from just below 1,000 RPM to just over . It doesn't happen that often but this needs to be fixed or risk being stranded somewhere i think . It can run for a good long time even went out of town and only happened once . Same mechanic now says take it to a shop that has a much bigger scanner / computer but I don't have much trust in this guy anymore . After all , why didn't he say that in the beginning ?? He may or may not done a relearn procedure as I was watching him doing this work . I don't remember him doing one . I found a relearn procedure did it twice now . Any help will be appreciated . Mechanic did before the TB replacement to try to scan but couldn't and I've tried to have it scanned at auto zone and nope . I looked at fuses look good . I may have to chance it at that place with the big diagnostic scanner .
