I've had the Legion 5 for about two months now and I absolutely love it. Totally worth paying to upgrade from an old 2015 Helios 300. Don't think I have any major issues with it at all, it's everything I wanted in a nice package AND made it easy for me to add a second M.2 SSD and upgrade to 32 GB of RAM. Overall? I personally have the 16" one (because I needed something portable for school still), so I think it mainly comes down to what you need it for and if this is something you're going to take places. • Keyboard must be good & RGB per key
      • Weight should be light & not too heavy for portability

@@xt355I’m not an expert but I will give you some of my personal thoughts on these. The Lenovo legion 7i seems very good to me as the performance is great, decent battery life, nice build quality and well done rgb (if that’s your thing,) it also has a 16:10 aspect ratio screen which is very nice. only downside the Legion is that you get some slower x16 memory. This laptop comes with advanced optimus. The MSI GE76 is a good pick if you want the most elite gaming performance in a laptop. Although this is compromised with meh build quality and battery life. This laptop has a MUX switch. The Asus S17 is a good laptop with a good screen, nice build quality, ok battery life (6ish hours with normal use.) the only thing that’s holding me back from recommending this one is that the performance is a little lacking compared to the others as the 3080 only has a 140w power draw compared the others 165w power draw. I’ve also heard that there is this weird rattling sound when running from other reviewers. The Alienware X17 is also very good with some large overclocking head room, very solid build quality, decent battery life. Although the Asthetics aren’t for everyone. Pretty good gaming performance too. This laptop has advanced optimus. Overall, I would pick the Lenovo legion 7i as it is (in my opinion) the best all rounder. Although if you REALLY need that extra performance then I would go for the GE76

I chatted to a Lenovo representative and he said that in their stress-tests with a 230 watt power brick even the RTX 3060 version was draining it's battery, so they decided to provide all models with a 300 watt one, whether it's a legion 5 with a 3060 or Legion 7 with a 3080m.
And yes, lack of fan control and them being loud at idle is a serious problem Lenovo needs to fix.

I'm just glad more reviewers like Jarrod and Dave2d are honest when talking about certain features that the manufacturers are doing when they are selling laptops instead of just being shills for companies since they get review units. Hopefully laptop manufacturers should take the criticism instead of complaining because of the negative and honest feedback because the flaws that they are selling and try to improve on the next generation. I tried to post an honest of something that I bought from Amazon but it could not be posted just because I mentioned something negative about the experience that I purchase from Amazon and all I tried to do was hold Amazon accountable. More of these companies need to held accountable otherwise we are not getting what we are paying for. Oems are already switching ssds with inferior parts and lower quality parts and selling them to reviewers and consumers and not telling them about it.

I'm going to change from the Advantage Edition to the Legion 5 with 3060.
    1. It's $450 cheaper ($1200 vs $1650)
    2. It has better cooling (keeps the GPU cool and the surface cooler as well)
    3. It has better RT performance (only about 9-10% slower than 6800M in Cyberpunk but faster with RT Medium)
    4. It has less stability issues. My 6800M has already had AMD driver timeout issues and stuttering in some games.
    5. It has MUX switch so you can do direct to dGPU even over HDMI (G15 AE requires you to use USB-C so the HDMI has hybrid which reduces performance)

Got my Legion 5 in March 2021. I've been extremely satisfied with it as my daily work and play machine. However, after 2 years of active use and transportation, it has developed some quirks. The first thing to fail was my stock hard drive. After that, keyboard's function row began to die. The Esc key, F4 - F6, and left Alt key have stopped working. My E doesn't always work, either. (Important for gaming!) Since these control the most useful functions, like brightness, and Alt-Tabbing, it's disappointing to have to manually adjust these settings. Also, the LCD screen has suffered some burn-in. The bottom of the screen has permanent vertical streaks staining my view of the taskbar at all times, which itself leaves a slightly permanent shadow of its outline on the display.
I still recommend it, as it has survived more than its fair share of travel (and moisture) over the last 3 years. I think if I can replace the bad keys, I would be happy to keep this machine for another 5 years. For other long term users, I recommend keeping your brightness down a notch, setting your taskbar to Auto-Hide, and picking a short delay for your screen saver! And always make regular backups of your data, no matter what you buy, because you never know! :)
    Good luck!

Jarrod I bought a Asus tuf a17 laptop. After realizing that it was a bad laptop I sold it and bought the legion 5 3060 5800h you have in the video. No matter what setting I picked the legion could not get the frames in valorant that the tuf a17 could get(3050 ti 5800h). I did a stress test and people in Dave2d server said that everything was fine when I showed them results. Why the heck is the tuf performing better with a 3050 ti? How???

I'm using that exact device for about 4 months.
Though some might think you are going over really minor things, I have to say you summed the biggest issues pretty good.
My device had 8 gb of slow ram and It was underperforming. I don't know if it is good or not in general, but I added another 8gb stick with faster timing and I got a really great performance uplift. Without removing the old and slow stick and just by adding a faster one alongside it.
For the Linux wi-fi problem I have to say I installed Manjaro Linux from the first day I got the laptop and my wi-fi is working perfectly since that day. I don't have any ideas about ubuntu. Maybe it is related to the Kernel and new only versions have Legion 5's wi-fi driver. Manjaro Linux's kernel is updated as fast as any new release rolling out and Ubuntu gets updated less often. (In a fixed 6 month schedule to be precise)
Other than that, the brick is heavy in itself and also the cable is one hell of a beasty cable! It is not a light package but I guess that is the price of one of the best performing 3060 laptops.
Despite all of this, some Legion 5s like mine have a mediocre 120hz display. I'm not a big color accuracy lover and the display is fine in my opinion. But it could be a real problem for graphic designers and people who are more sensitive to color inaccuracy.
In the end I absolutely love this laptop! I'm currently playing DOOM Eternal on ultra (high textures due to vram limitation but basically it makes no difference) with Ray Tracing and DLSS quality at constant 120fps. This machine is really really good as a powerful midrange gaming oriented laptop.

I have the Legion 5 3060 RTX, 120hz . Screen is bad, it actually is bad.
The laptop has an annoying coil whine so I have to shut down every night before going to sleep, it's that annoying.
The fans sometimes speed up when "idle" but actually it's "probably" because of windows background apps when I check in task manager sometimes, as far as I know.
The (realtek) audio quality aren't good when using headphones (used 2 different headphones) and also the volume at max still isn't loud enough and when trying to maximise further it worsens the quality.
The touchpad is awful. The left and right click buttons are part of the touchpad and it moves the cursor even when sliding on the very bottom of the buttons edges. I put velcro over the left click button area.
Besides all this, the performance is amazing ._.
That's not good enough, might as well buy a PC. If I could refund this laptop I'd just buy a PC or a more expensive gaming laptop.

Don’t really abuse my laptop, but I do like having quite a number of tabs open in Chrome and have noticed my RAM run pretty high playing a not that demanding game (in my opinion). New to really computers like this, so I’m not sure how to make it run better and find it a bit confusing, so I just try to close some apps and keep my stuff updated. The powerbrick can be hot when I’m using it and if it’s not plugged in it lasts maybe an hour and a half when gaming (even though the power estimate says 2hr30mins about). I have a late 2023 Lenovo Legion 5i. Using Lenovo Vantage software it is possible to adjust fan speeds. You click on Thermal Mode in the main screen. That takes you to Performance Mode/Balance Mode/Quiet Mode/Custom Mode. Custom Mode allows you to control the fan speeds for the other three modes, unfortunately you cannot lower the fan speeds, only raise them.
Fn + Q will also toggle between the Modes.
Personally I found tweaking fan speeds in Balance Mode and ticking the option to Enable Legion AI Engine dropped my temperatures by almost 15C. It will depend on what games you play. I am not a competitive FPS player and generally play isometric turn based games like Baldurs Gate 3 and Jagged Alliance 3, so the variable cpu clock speeds that this setting gives is not noticeable.

Been using my legion 5 pro daily at work for 1.4 years now straight. I absolutely love this laptop. Could it be better ? Sure. For the price I’m glad I gave it a try after 25 + alienwares over the last 15 or so years.
    What I wanted :
1600p screen. Since the original 19x1200p 17 I’ve despised 1080 and widescreen screens. Alienware at the time had none.
Power plug at the rear . Heavy thick cable stays out of the way when I use it on my lap or on the table. Ports on the rear but wanted a usb for a wireless mouse on the right side. Thus is from 2009 memories of a unibody MacBook 17 that had it on the left side and the metal of the chassis interfered with the signal 💀. Use the port on the rear for the usb end and works great and looks great out of the way.
Keyboard. Absolutely great spacing and layout of keys especially f1 keys. This is unique to me and I’m actually frustrated playing level 2600+ arena in wow I’m finding I’m having more misclicks and key issues on my $300 desktop keyboard vs the fantastic keyboard on this legion 5 pro 🥲.
Happy that I can put it into balance and low power modes easily and have more than an hour to tune my m4 and flash the computer multiple times without worrying about the battery life. I definitely couldn’t do this with my 18xr3 with dual 980ms which gave me about 300 seconds 🤣
I use an m2 skin and used a hair dryer moved the ugly stickers on the palm rest to the bottom and used a dark skin on the palm rest and I used a white skin on the outer lid which looks absolutely amazing with the legion tri star. I think legion dropped the ball on going away from the logo . It looks amazing and I’m happy I got the model with it. As an Alienware fanboi it adds just enough style 👌.
I do wish the chassis and palm rest area was metal but for the price totally acceptable.
I wish there was a way to have the screen go to 60hz and an ultra power savings mode to at least extend unplugged life then it would be even better.

it's far from perfect. It has no fan control(a must for a gaming laptop), no voltage control even in BIOS(MSI and HP have it), with battery charge limit for prolonging it's lifespan you can only choose 60%, not the optimal 80% like others offer.
It's very close to perfection but unfortunately Lenovo screwed it for enthusiasts.

    • @zsoca31
      @zsoca31 2 роки тому

Lithium batteries optimum charge for storage is around 60%. Look it up. Other brands use 80 because the users usually forget to fully charge it before disconnecting and then they would be left with a 60% battery. So they will eventually turn off this feature. Voltage control is not necessary in my opinion since its gpu (mine 3070) runs at true 130watt limit, not like in the gigabyte laptop or hp omen.

    • @TabalugaDragon
      @TabalugaDragon 2 роки тому

      @@zsoca31 umm what?
      1. 80% is the perfect balance between capacity and longevity. My 11-year old Samsung laptop with the limit of 80% still has like 50-60% of original capacity. It's the last 20% that are the most harmful for the battery. Yes it's optimial to keep the battery charged at 40-50%(not 60), but in case you need to use your laptop suddenly you'd have to spend time to charge it, it's very inconvinient to switch back and forth between 60 and 100% to reach needed capacity. Others offer 60 or 80% choice, heck with Dell you can select the EXACT percentage, ranging from 55 to 100%.
      2. Voltage control is definitely needed in gaming laptops. They often reach 90+ degrees in heavy loads(some heavy games included) and throttle, with undervolting not only you lower temps, you also get more performance back, limited by laptop formfactor.
      3. What does GPU wattage have to do with it? I was talking about CPU undervolting, unlike HP and MSI, Lenovo don't allow it on their Legion 5 and 5 pro. CPU is what gets the hottest. Besides, voltage control on Nvidia GPU-s have been available on all laptops since 1000 series via MSI Afterburner.

I have balance charged and soldered Lithium battery cells, and i will take 60% over 80% anytime.
Thats Nice If you can select the exact percentage in dells.
      2. I think lenovos cooling is superior to most brands, you can play with voltages and fans but you will never get good temperatures If the case is too slim or the fans or pipes etc are bad.
There is so many fucked up designs and component combinations that I am just happy if my gpu/cpu works as the manufacturer intended.
You are right though, voltage control should be an option.
But I find the display a much bigger issue. The market is flooded with bad display panels and its basically a lottery which exact panel you get in your box. i guess what was laying around in the factory at that time.

Lenovo did improve it since 2019 a lot. Unlike Acer. Back in 2019 I watched your reviews on the Legion Y530 (I think it was or the Legion 5, not sure) and Predator 300. I choose the Predator and that laptop has been faultless. So to sum it up 2019 - Predator 300. 2020 - Legion 5. They made some much needed upgrades. 2021 seem kinda of a downgrade for both companies as far as I can see.

    • Display must be 17.3” QHD 1440p (higher refresh rate for gaming obviously) & has good colors as well
    • CPU should be powerful enough (up to you)
    • GPU should be RTX 3080 with 16 GB VRAM
    • RAM should be dual-channel and 32 GB (should be upgradeable)
    • Overall build quality must be excellent (solid & sturdy finish but material should be easily cleanable and does not leave greasy stains from hands etc.)
    • Battery should be decent like 6-7 hours (not gaming I game only plugged on)
    • Keyboard must be good & RGB per key
    • Weight should be light & not too heavy for portability
    • Thermals should be excellent for both GPU and CPU temps should remain under 85°C for extensive periods of gaming and should not suffer from thermal throttling at all
    • Excellent SSDs installed with higher speeds (should be upgradeable)
    • Excellent audio quality
    • Price is not an issue!

I would like to clarify on the first point you stated. Complaining about 300w brick is a bit pointless, considering the Lenovo is the only laptop having 130w 3060. But yes, the brick makes it unportable. This being said, if you want portability go buy a 40-65w USB c power brick. It's enough to power the laptop for office work without hybrid mode being on ( 3060 always on).

I have my Legion 5 5800h and 3060 for about a week, after watching all your videos on it. The 2 downsides I have is:
Battery - granted, is a lot smaller than the one you have, my battery looks like it left room for a 2.5" SSD, though there's no option to add one
Networking in general - Either over ethernet or Wifi, my network seems to max out at 11.8mb, no matter where I download from, or if it's wifi or ethernet.
The odd thing is, is that it can do more, but "shows" me that it's only doing this amount. For example, on any speed test site it tells me my upload is 0.3mb, but I can stream to UA-cam at 15mbps not a problem, so i'm not sure what the software is doing to give it this. I've disabled all networking options that could cause it in Vantage, but I've just learned to deal with it's quirks, hoping that there may be an update down the line, and as you mention, updating the wifi card will really help.
All in all, I'm happy enough, I got this model with a 120hz screen and 8gb ram (upgraded that, too) for €1099, which was also the cheapest gaming laptop the store had with an RTX card, but was also the best laptop in the store from what I saw on the specsheets.
Thank you for showing me this laptop, I'll always be appreciative of it

Hello and greetings Jarrod . im one of lenovo 5 user from Malaysia. These are my feedback of using lenovo 5 Rtx3060 Amd Ryzen 7 5800H for a month.
    - touchpad is okay. I didnt notice any loose part of the touchpad and my unit has a responsive touchpad.
    - my unit has a realtek wifi card. So it should pose a problem of lagging when playing games or surfing the web. It may be slow in loading the site but i didnt see any sudden drops in the internet latency.
    - My unit uses a slower SK Hynix RAM ( 16GB single rank i think ) but i didnt changed it to a newer RAM as I was short on money. However , getting a 100fps in every game is still considered a great deal for me as i didnt play much games.
    - this unit comes with 300W brick. I have no issues at the moment as im currently working from home. However it may cause an extra weight if im gonna use it outstation.
    - mine has 165hz screen. Colour is accurate, brightness is same as your findings. No issue so far for me.
    - for fan speed issue, i didnt hear noises from fan when im using quiet mode . It only goes to fighter jet mode when i turned on performance mode and the jet fan noise can be heard quite loud but not too annoying to me.
Thank you Jarrod for highlighting these issues. It helps me aware of my unit more. 👍
