The way Charlie loves and adores his son, Little Charles is one of my absolute favourite things about this movie. Chris Cooper's performance here is truly compelling
And it isn’t even really his son! His wife cheated on him with his brother and got pregnant, so little Charles is actually his nephew. And he knows this. Knows all about the betrayal but keeps it to himself and raises and loves little Charles as if he were his own. A truly selfless person, living his whole life for the people he loves, no matter what mistakes they make or promises they break. A real man, husband and father in the classical sense. Something that seems to get more and more rare as time goes on...
In the original play, I think it was Mattie Faye that hints how Charles (the dad) "shoots blanks". She was always envious of Violet and Beverly and how they could conceive. So Mattie Faye seduced Bev for her own selfish reasons, cheating on Charles, conceiving little Charles, and betraying Violet.
Even when he speaks here he let's on he knows: "whatever faults he had", "generous place in your heart for your own son" Chris Cooper delivered on his character so well
Thats how it is in many families. My cousins and i are all in our 20s have full time jobs some with their own families but we are still the "kids". It is what it is i guess.
@@hockema56 The movie is based on a Broadway play. In the play the characters of Ivy and Little Charles are actually in their twenties so that might have something to do with it as well.
You stop being a kid when your parent dies. Did you see the 100-year-old mother who gave sweets that she collected from a restaurant to her 80-year-old daughter?
Chris Cooper: "I can't understand why folks can't be respectful of one another." As much as BenC's voice and obvious talent are a complete delight , Chris Cooper stole the scene with that monologue and the one question people anywhere just can't seem to answer.
She said "You're my hero" and I literally remembered Ben as Sherlock says" Heros don't exist and even if they did,I wouldn't be one of them" Then I couldn't stop laughing
More spouses being abused or bullied by their husbands or wives or watching them belittle their own kids need to stand up like this. Too many bullies in families
Verbal abuse that they endured when they was young from their family... and the cycle doesn't break.. that hurt they take it oh their kids... I should know my mom is like that
We officially need to make a movie with Ben and Martin! Martin is also a splendid singer. They need to act and do a duet. Now that would be AMAZING! Who's with me?
+gothicghost They were both in The Hobbit trilogy. Unfortunately they couldn't find a part in the script in which Bilbo Baggins could break into song with Smaug the dragon
As a kid, I didn't understand Mae's hatred for Charles either. But now when I think about it, I think it has to do with the fact that he's a reminder of her mistake, a reminder of how she betrayed her sister and her husband, and she has to live with that for the rest of her life. Not saying it excuses her behavior, but it does explain it.
I did not think it was possible for me to love Benedict anymore. Has anyone noticed that there are two dominant traits in varying degrees in every one of his characters: nonsocialness/ social awkwardness and brilliant intelligence Alan Touring in "Imitation Games": Incredibly socially awkward and friggin brilliant. Little Charlie in "Orange Osage County": Incredibly socially awkward Sherlock in "Sherlock": non-social and a perceptive genius
His character in Star Trek was super evil and not socially awkward at all. But I guess you could say he was also an evil genius, but I think the movie focused more on how he's like a savage. Check it out if you haven't already, it's really good :)
Well he's good at it. But he can do comedy as well. He played a nerdy character in starter for 10 and he played a police officer in 4 lions. He did live plays at theatre as Frankenstein's characters and Shakespeare's characters. He's very versatile. You just need to watch his other works rather than the main stream ones.
I haven't even watched the whole film but the lines "We've been married 38 years, and I wouldn't trade thrm for anything. But if you can't find a generous place in your heart for your own son, we're not gonna make it to 39." made me bawl my eyes out
DON'T!! Watch the play first. The movie is drastically less powerful than the play.. I've played in and worked on the play. Trust me, you're gonna thank me!
Christian Letellier wow there's a play??? I'm so glad you told me, I know Benedict's background is in theater, so I bet he's flawless on stage!! Now I really have to see it, is it online???
He's not in the play, the actor that plays Little Charles is Ian Bradford. But the play is what the movie is based off of. There's a housemaid and a Sherrif who play HUGE roles in the story (which were cut in the movie) and Bev (The Patriarch of the house) is played by Tracy Letts' dad (Tracy is the author of both the play and the screen adaption). It's so much better than the movie! It won many TONY awards that year. It's so good! But, on the other hand, if you're a Benedict Cumberbatch fan, watch the film. The actors are great, and it would be an amazing movie to me, if I wasn't so attached/ used to the play!
What’s sad about this scene is that, Charlie (who is revealed to not be little charles’ biological father) shows a lot more compassion as a father than little Charles’ own mother.
One of my favorite scenes in this movie. I love how Chris Cooper’s character expresses his frustrations and yet controlled his rage against the wife. I think he knew in his heart that Charles wasn’t his but still love him anyway.
Their relationship is the only one that is full of true love and respect, but it has its flaw like the rest of the family. They’re an incest couple, but it’s seen as less disgusting and more sympathetic.
This has me in years. I used to listen to this when I was very suicidal as a teen. 8 years later, I randomly remembered this. Having a horrible time alone, bed ridden, very ill. I pray to find a lover who would love me and sing to me that way.
Chris Cooper in this scene owns it. His dialogue to his wife gets me every damn time. I still don't know how Meryl Streep did not win for best actress for her role in the movie. Hollywood must really love Jennifer Lawrence. She was good, but not as good as Streep in this role imo
This film is beautiful, heartbreaking and funny all at once. I loved Chris Cooper in his role as Charlie, and I would like to see him play similar roles.
Such an underrated film! While the subject matter is dark, the entire screenplay a bit dim and grim, there is something just wholesome and entertaining about it. The entire cast and crew should be so proud of themselves!
Just the sweetest song. Symbolic of the juxtaposition and duality of human behavior (and the human condition), that swings us back to our family of origin. Good or bad, unknown or known, breaking free of toxicity is no easy feat, often leaving scars - if not open wounds.
While Meryl absolutely deserves all the praise she got, every performance in this film is absolutely stunning. Oscar Worthy, everyone of them, if you ask me
If it wasn't wrong I'd ship Ivy and Charles because they're precious. Also Chris Cooper's dialogue is so needed and appreciated. I hate people's fighting and insulting, and have to wait for people to grow up and respect each other.
Chris Cooper nails it. A good guy who's just had it up to here with his wife's continual tirades against her son. * it almost sounds like he already knows that her son isn't his own by the way he talked about honored/protected Beverly's memory.
Well, the movie is set in Oklahoma and the character (a quiet, shy, not necessarily smart dude, in contrast to most of Benedict’s roles) is presumably from there, so yes, he would have an American accent, even when singing.
I watched this few years ago and I really like this film, dysfunctional family at its best. But I never realized Benedict Cumberbatch was in it til now? How is that even possible?!!
If she said that to Ben I would react the same way. I would go and comfort Ben. The face Ben pulled when the woman said about his job I pull that face at school all the time.
