Thank you for the video. I have EW Hollywood Backup Singers. Perhaps you can show a video with a couple of in-depth techniques that I struggle with. For each of the following words: the 'Yuh' sound at the beginning of the words 'You' and 'Yours'. The 'Huh' sound at the beginning of the word 'He' or 'Here'. The cussive 'Tuh' in the word 'to'. The 'Wuh' at the beginning of 'Wait' or 'When' and the 'muh' or 'meh' for the more 'me'. I have worked with the Staccato settings for the Letters but not the 'Syllable' portion yet. Each of the above words seem difficult to get the 'cussives' if that's the right word. Your suggestions and tutorials would be a great help.

Hi Euan, great video, thanks. One quick question: you mentioned at the beginning that the stock Votox sound for the word "new" sounded more like "nooo" (American pronunciation, I guess), but you didn't show how to change it to sound more like "new" (UK pronunciation). Given that your name contains the sound I'm trying to create 🙂, how would you go about it?
Hi Kim, thanks for your question. The ‘Eu’ is a bit like You or Yoo, so experiment with “nu” or ‘nU’. Sometines using capitals can affect the vowel sounds. If you also ‘borrow’ one of the existing phrases from the drop-down menu and tweak from there. I’ll have a try too and update this comment if I find a better way.
+PriaboniaMusic it’s a good question. It depends on what you’re looking for. Word builder works well for libraries like Hollywood Choirs and Symphonic Choirs. Hollywood Choirs gives you the intensity of sound for big epic scores. Backup singers uses Wordbuilder for more nuanced smaller group multi patches and good for singer/ songwriters. Try out their ComposerCloud and have some fun.
I would love to see some video that shows the workflow of using the Word Builder for an entire song. I suppose that you would end up with every single word to be sung by a choir in a single Play instance. If you had two vocals lines (maybe a women's choir and a men's choir), you end up with two instances of Play, each with its own word builder phrase. Is that it, or is there another approach that does it?
+Eddie Lovelace that would do it. One way to help would be to write your lyrics, then copy and paste them. Then you could split up any syllables. You’d use two or 4 tracks (if you wanted cross-rhythms or effective melisma). It’s worth a go. I will see if I can create a demo of this soon. I’ve got another video planned and I’m hoping to get back into the Make Music Like series too. Watch this space and thanks for watching 😁

Oh right, yes, are you using multiple tracks? Sometimes when a key is pressed by accident it can offset some of the phrases to the next syllable. Double press the return home should help, but interestingly, if you want to stop, reset the phrases, then you can purge the playback by editing note lengths. Checkout this handy guide: www.soundsonline-forums.com/docs/EW-Hollywood-Choirs-User-Manual.pdf If you’re using one track and are using multi voice, SATB on one track, then it’ll be harder to keep the flow. Nice video! Thanks for the explanation. Do you know if there is a way to change pitch while holding a syllable? Like whenever I hit a new key on my keyboard, the choir moves along the phrase syllable by syllable, but I want it to stay on one syllable but still change to a different note. Is that possible? Thanks in advance and all the best from Germany :)
Hi and thanks for watching. At present, there isn’t, and even trying the pitch bend yields no results. Different libraries function uniquely. I hope that this is something they implement in future libraries. There is one workaround and that is to put the same syllable, or phoneme in twice, then elongate the midi in the editor of your DAW to smooth it out to get as close to melisma as you can. Thanks for your support from Germany. 😁
@@euansmithmusic Thanks for the quick reply! And yes, that workaround works, thank you! :) I still hope they will fix that, it would be very nice to have that option available without having to mess with the midi and the text. Cheers again! :)
So I tweaked and tweaked and finally found the pronunciation that I was looking for. Now how do I go about saving it, so that I can use it on another song or track down the road. I also made some changes in EW Play, on the "Player" page...tweaked the decay, release etc. How do I go about saving the voice and the changes in the Player? Seems I tried this once before and was never able to get that same tweaked voice back....
As far as I’m aware, you can go into the Settings cog and then select “File” and “Save As” in the plug in window. That’ll save your insurance so you can reload it at anytime in any project. 🤞 Let me know if this helps you.
@@euansmithmusic I'm not seeing any type of Settings Cog in Wordbuilder. All I see is import/export, and I tried exporting, but when I went to import in another instance of Wordbuilder, I got a message saying "This is not a valid voice file"...very confusing...
The bottom of p51 goes into more detail about “Adding to Phrases” where you can create your own folder of phrases with all of their settings to import into other projects. media.soundsonline.com/manuals/EW-Symphonic-Choirs-User-Manual.pdf
@@euansmithmusic Thanks for the tips. In my situation, after exporting a tweaked voice, I exported it to one of the Alto voice files. Unable to import it, I then found it listed in the browser with the other Alto voices...big learning curve here, but I'm slowly getting it. Thanks Euan!!
Hey Euan thanks for this tutorial. I subscribed to composer cloud the other day and have been playing with Hollywood Choirs. I keep encountering one extremely frustrating problem: if I decide that I want to add another letter to a syllable in the text editor (eg. I decide I want to experiment with doubling a vowel), it undoes all of the work I've done in the time editor. Do you know if there is anyway around this?
Yes and I’ve just been editing a video on this very thing today. I’ll be uploading on Sunday. Innit, I go through the tweaks and edits as well as feature a handy download that you can use as a reference. I always find it trial an error, but some combinations of standard and votox work well. lol out for the upload this weekend and thanks for watching.
@@euansmithmusic amazing! I actually emailed East-West after leaving this comment, and they told me that there wasn't a solution, but if you've found a work around then that's hype!! I look forward to the video
Wordbuilder Tips for East West Backup Singers and Hollywood Choirs video is now up. You can click here to view: ua-cam.com/video/I9Cs7lSaVRk/v-deo.html
You can add the vowel sound in twice and separate with a space, you’ll play it twice, then using my tips, should be able to change the length of the vowel. It is rudimentary but might just work. Good luck!
How can we do when there is only one syllable with multiple notes for it to sounds real? For example, for a "ah" sound lasting 5 notes, I currently make "a a a a a" in the vote word builder but the problem is that it makes the "ah" sound cutting between each note... How can I make it sound like only one syllable but with multiple notes?
You mean to create a melisma; using one long "Aah" sound but covering several notes? 1 - Change the vowels each time to reduce the "A" to soften it to almost inaudible hearing. 2 - OR export the choral phrase as an audio file and crossfade the stuttered sounds / elongate the audio. 3 - Watch the updated version of this video here: ua-cam.com/video/I9Cs7lSaVRk/v-deo.html 4 - Like and Subscribe to this video and my channel. I hope that these helped. Let me know how you get on. I know East West are about to replace their Play engine, so I hope that any newer vocal multi-patch libraries include the ability to create more realistic melisma.
Hi Thanks for the Viddeo I was wondering in a track where i repeat lets say a chorus of oohs and ahhs and then three words on the end this needs to be repeated 3x do i just write it 3x it seems to get off track by the time it gets to the 3rd x is there another way to repeat a chorus thanks jeff
Hi Jeff, a good question. I’d type it in 3 times but any syllables, split up so it takes a keyboard press to trigger. Shape each word and that should help. You can also copy and paste the MIDI and as long as there are enough instances to finish the phrase before it repeats, this should work. Good luck. Let me know how you get on 😁
So I have access to word builder, and I can type until I'm blue in the face, but I can't get it to play on the song? I import MIDIs I create in another program, since I don't have a keyboard (I can't play piano.) I have the melody and the harmonies all set. But I can't get it to play the words to the songs? In fact I get NO sound when I use word builder at all with what I have. I'm so lost at what I'm doing wrong. Can you help?
What sound library are you using to play your imported MIDI tracks? Make sure the vocal library supports WB and it is a WB Multi patch you’ve chosen. Make sure any licenses are up to date. Update your EAST WEST sounds via the updater too. Checkout my more recent Wordbuilder video here: ua-cam.com/video/I9Cs7lSaVRk/v-deo.html
Hi Oscar, not that I know of. That’s a great idea. Importing is possible. You can also copy and paste from other sources. then edit in-software. How have you found it as a plugin?
Hi, you need a sound library that uses it. It’s not a standalone plugin. A library like Hollywood Choirs or Symphonic Choirs should work. If using Play, rather than Opus, you’ll find it in the Perform Tab. Have you also read the manual? media.soundsonline.com/docs/EW-WordBuilder-Quick-Guide.pdf
jimtzu you have to select the Multi patches, then Wordbuilder appears as an option at the top of the plug-in page. Make sure you’ve selected the Mixer tab on the plugin (I think) in order to see it. Did you watch the entire video? I show you how. If not, checkout the same feature on the Other videos in the same playlist.
I’ve not used Cubase for this, but F4 will help to sync, if you’re starting to play halfway through the phrase. Wordbuilder includes DAW sync’ing to get round the problem. As with the speed learning described earlier, play through the entire sequenced part in Sync/Draw Only Learn mode, and HWC will now follow the lyrics from any point. There is one caveat; if your DAW is configured to chase notes (ie. notes sound wherever in their duration you hit ‘play’) you must start playback during a gap between syllables. If you start playing in the middle of a note, WB will simply continue its cycle from wherever it last left off (usually in the wrong place), and will never realign itself correctly. Hopefully one of these works for you.
Does a new track need to be made for each new sentence? I've created a sentence, but when I go to add to another part of the song with a different sentence, it changes the initial ones.
Thanks for your question. If you already have a sentence, you just copy and paste it in, but if you want the sounds of each word to fall on different notes, you have to separate the syllables of each word. This can be trial and error, but it does work. An example of this is shown in the updated follow up video that I recorded here: ua-cam.com/play/PLJ1MA7R7-OSy4PUMWI3tfaBlsFAuOKepI.html. If you’re finding that it overwrites your sentence or starts at the wrong part of the sentence, just restart the music from the start. It’s not ideal but it’s the only way. Shorter phrases in shorter MIDI region recordings will work better. Good luck and happy composing.
@@euansmithmusic Hi, I think the video link points to a different video. Seems to point to a drone flying video. Can you provide link to the updated video or the title of it? Thanks! I also have the same question when writing multiple sentences.
Have you got a license for the particular sound library you want to use it with. e.g Hollywood Choirs? Checkout their page for details: media.soundsonline.com/docs/EW-WordBuilder-Quick-Guide.pdf It’ll hopefully help. Wordbuilder only works on “MULTI” patches so check you’re not trying to do solo voices.
You can build your song around the phrase you make in any Digital Audio Workstation by adding in tracks and instruments. Or you can export the audio file (from one DAW) then import it into whatever programme you wish. Thanks for watching.
Are there websites or resources for downloadable ready to go phrases or scripts of additional English phrases library somewhere? This in addition to the stock ones included? Thank you peace.

The best thing for you to do is have a go. I don’t currently do Zoom training on this but I am planning training courses at the moment. Thanks for watching.
PLAY works fine in Reason and I assume the newer OPUS engine does too, but if you wanted to use multiple instruments/articulations (and you should!) you would need multiple instances of PLAY (each on MIDI channel 1) rather than multiple tracks using the same instance on different MIDI channels (which is possible on just about any other DAW that I am aware of). Use a library such as Hollywood Choirs and Wordbuilder feature is built in.

Hello Stein and thanks for watching. I’m hoping you watched the full video. This was purely about the Wordbuilder Interface. To prepare for this video: 1) You need a license for an East West vocal library that uses MULTI patches and WORDBUILDER through the PLAY plugin. 2) You need the library downloaded on an external SSD / HDD. 3) Wordbuilder is part of the PLAY engine; a plug-in that you access via your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), much like Kontakt or Spitfire Audio’s dedicated plugin. 4) Select the choir multi patch you wish. 5) If stuck, visit soundsonline for a full guide on setting it up.

Hi Harry; I’m glad that you got this sorted. 😁
3 - Watch the updated version of this video here: ua-cam.com/video/I9Cs7lSaVRk/v-deo.html
4 - Like and Subscribe to this video and my channel.
I hope that these helped. Let me know how you get on. I know East West are about to replace their Play engine, so I hope that any newer vocal multi-patch libraries include the ability to create more realistic melisma.
Hi Thanks for the Viddeo I was wondering in a track where i repeat lets say a chorus of oohs and ahhs and then three words on the end this needs to be repeated 3x do i just write it 3x it seems to get off track by the time it gets to the 3rd x is there another way to repeat a chorus
thanks jeff
Is there a place or forum where users have shared words or phrases you could copy or maybe even import?
Hi Oscar, not that I know of. That’s a great idea. Importing is possible. You can also copy and paste from other sources. then edit in-software. How have you found it as a plugin?
Do anyone know if there is any male choir release for this? I have the Hollywood Backup singers.
Hollywood Choirs has Male WB Choirs and Female WB Choirs. In my updated version of this video, I explore these in more depth. Thanks for watching. 😁
@@euansmithmusic hmm very strange. I can only find females backup singers. I have Hollywood Backup singers. Is it different library?
Yes, Hollywood Choirs is a different library. Backup singers is purely female.
Hi Euan. I getting a bit confused about how to hold the vowel of a syllable over multiple notes. Can you kindly help me?
Hi Kent, I created a tutorial for this very question. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/rthH3B3pANM/v-deo.html Thanks for watching 😀
@@euansmithmusic Thank you!!
Hello how I can add this VST to Logic Pro X? I have PLAY software. Thank you
Hi, you need a sound library that uses it. It’s not a standalone plugin. A library like Hollywood Choirs or Symphonic Choirs should work. If using Play, rather than Opus, you’ll find it in the Perform Tab.
Have you also read the manual? media.soundsonline.com/docs/EW-WordBuilder-Quick-Guide.pdf
how do you get a phrase sung outloud? i see no way to turn it on or play. documentation is pretty sketchy
jimtzu you have to select the Multi patches, then Wordbuilder appears as an option at the top of the plug-in page. Make sure you’ve selected the Mixer tab on the plugin (I think) in order to see it. Did you watch the entire video? I show you how. If not, checkout the same feature on the Other videos in the same playlist.
Hello. Could you tell me how to activate the sync function with the DAW (Cubase)? Thanks

Perfect. I think I have understood. I will try. Thank you very much for answering. Greetings from Seville.
Bravo !!!. What you told me has worked perfectly. Thanks once again
Excellent Juan, I’m glad that helped. Hello to you in Seville from the UK. 😃 Do subscribe for more Wordbuilder-related content coming soon.
Sorry about that. I’d no idea so thanks for letting me know. ua-cam.com/play/PLJ1MA7R7-OSy4PUMWI3tfaBlsFAuOKepI.html
It doesn't let me press "wordbuilder". 0:58 when you see it all lighten up in blue there, for me it's just greyed out.

Hello, I just purchased Symphonic Choirs Gold and I'm not sure how to access Wordbuilder. Is there something I'm missing? Do I need Hollywood Choirs?
Thank you!
+Zac Burns be sure to select a “Multi” patch, open the PLAY plugin in your DAW and it should appear on the top left. Click on it and have fun.
Do u do zoom sessions on this I have this library but never really had a chance to use this
The best thing for you to do is have a go. I don’t currently do Zoom training on this but I am planning training courses at the moment. Thanks for watching.
Does it connect to reason 11
PLAY works fine in Reason and I assume the newer OPUS engine does too, but if you wanted to use multiple instruments/articulations (and you should!) you would need multiple instances of PLAY (each on MIDI channel 1) rather than multiple tracks using the same instance on different MIDI channels (which is possible on just about any other DAW that I am aware of).
Use a library such as Hollywood Choirs and Wordbuilder feature is built in.

Yes, it has stock Latin phrases and you can type in any Latin word you want and tweak it too. I have a whole playlist on this.
@@euansmithmusic one question. Is EWQL Hollywood choir better than EWQL synphonic choir?
Yes, by a country mile 😁bin my opinion anyway.
What chords do you play to play back the world's we creat?
I think throughout it’s just C Maj to Ab Major. I don’t see where I play to this phrase though.
How do you get this working with a midi file? I’m not getting any words with my midi notes?
Make sure you have a library that’s compatible with Wordbuilder. Select the sound library and use the Wordbuilder plugin to type the words to go along with your MIDI track.
I’ve got a Wordbuilder course coming soon. You’ll be able to find out more about this soon.
Would you please slow down, way down, as this will allow better understanding and thus better retention of what your saying. Not to mention accents, especially thick accents, are always a challenge for many, so talking slower greatly helps listeners.
I’m a very fast talker, so I’m use to it. However, thick accents makes listening to fast talkers tricky.

Sorry to have to say, but your presentation of an overview requires that you understand how to set up WB and how to make the basic function work. Your training starts at step 2 or 3. I need start-up instructions to make the program work. You are not the only one presenting EW and starting well after the basic setup.
Hello Stein and thanks for watching. I’m hoping you watched the full video. This was purely about the Wordbuilder Interface.
To prepare for this video:
1) You need a license for an East West vocal library that uses MULTI patches and WORDBUILDER through the PLAY plugin.
I’ve also posted a link to the previous questionner.
