      I stayed awake for multiple nights. I have the WatchDuty, Pulsepoint and Broadcastify apps. I live in Joshua Tree but drove in to stay with my parents that live at the base of the mountains in San Bernardino. I’m a retired firefighter. My Dad is a retired firefighter. Our house burned in a 1980 wind-driven fire. My parents rebuilt and are still in the same spot. They’re in their 80’s so I worry. I can’t recommend the WatchDuty app enough. It’s worth paying for the pro version where you can see the aircraft and have access to the fire cameras. You can view those things elsewhere but it’s nice to have everything in one place.

I was born in 2000 and just about every person my age seems to have always had a sense that the world is burning and nobody has the ability to fix it. To Rhett’s point: As a gen z (2002) I was born into a world where 9/11 had already happened. School shootings had already started and were on the rise. I deeply relate to the sense of dread and existentialism that Rhett expressed. And it is a completely valid thing to feel, especially because it’s something that the masses share. I’m about to graduate college in May and I can hardly focus on how significant of a goal it is when it constantly feels like the world is ending.
    But to Jenna’s point, it is good to know that there are still others out there who care and are active about helping communities. Altruism isn’t a thing of the past, and if anything it’s accessible now more than ever.
    Glad everyone at Mythical is okay, I hope things improve for everyone affected by the tragedy of these fires!

    This video is a great example of how beneficial it is to train and socialize all pets for all kinds of situations. Even if you think "the cat only goes to the vet every year or three, so it's not worth the time and energy to feed him treats near his carrier everyday for months, then feed him treats in his carrier everyday for months, just so that he's willing to get in it for a scheduled vet appointment when I have plenty of time to catch him before the appointment," emergencies are so much worse with a pet that won't cooperate. Emergency preparedness is a great motivation to crate train cats and dogs, and work on your animal's social skills with strangers and other pets.

      @oli_bee 8 днів тому +7

      so true!!! and this obviously is different than link’s situation with the cat hiding under the bed in the airbnb, but in your own home, it’s important to block underneath your bed so your animals can’t hide in an emergency.

    • @FinallyBeingMyself
      @FinallyBeingMyself 7 днів тому +7

      Yes!! I live across the street from my parents with my cat, and we’re in a tornado/really damaging thunderstorm prone area. We don’t have a basement, but my parents do. The first time I had to grab my cat and run him across the street to my parents’ house, he was very unhappy! But now, every time the siren goes off, he runs to the door and waits for me. The last time, I really didn’t want to go outside, but he was pawing at the door and looking back at me, while the siren was going off…but the weather seemed fine. Long story short, we eventually go over there and within about 5mins, stuff starts slamming into the back of the house and the power cuts off. A tornado had come right through our street! The police had to block our street off cuz of a live wire down right in front of my parents’ house. There was a LOT of downed trees and power lines, to the point that power wasn’t fully restored to everyone for over a week. It was crazy! My house was fine, but it’s still crazy that I would’ve stayed home if my cat wasn’t so insistent on going across the street. He still hates it, and he’s still clearly worked up and upset while we’re there during the bad storms, but he knows that when that siren goes off, we go across the street.

    I don't think Rhett is getting too political. He's just been through a terrifying natural disaster he cannot control. Of course, he's upset. And I remember how bad winters used to be in Chicago 25yrs ago. It's not the same now. Winters here are less intense and shorter. And anyone who has been through such a terrifying event has every right to talk out their trauma.

    • @evapunk522
      @evapunk522 8 днів тому +6

      The thing is tho, the fact that winters have been different in our neck of the woods lately is literally because of climate change..which is even more worrisome. I've noticed that while it might "seem" less intense, we get a lot more ice storms where literally everything is just covered in ice. That never happened when I was a kid, as far as I can remember. We would get big snowstorms sure, but not ice. And now the snow that we used to get a lot more is going even more south and I'm seeing people in Florida & Texas now having issues with their pipes freezing or having issues in their homes because their heating system is not meant to handle such cold temperatures. That stuff just didn't really happen that much 30 or so years ago...but we've messed up so much in the last few decades that this is how it is now. And tbh, it's only getting worse.

    The first thirty days after a critical incident are the hardest, and your nervous system will be all over the place. After a couple of months, if fhe symptoms are still present youre in PTSD territory. Glad you both have support networks! Glad everyone is safe.

    I'm glad y'all are safe!
    I also want to thank you for having such an important conversation about the kind of world we've entered. I've explained to others the exact feeling that Rhett mentioned where there was a time where I thought, "there are adults who are experts in fields that will handle things that need to be handled." As an adult myself, that has slowly been eroded (quickly in more recent years). It's tough to plan for the future when the future feels so tenuous. (I tried to think of a hopeful note to end this comment on. Maybe I can think of one and edit this later).

    Glad you all are safe. Hateful people outside of California have this fetish of California failing or burning, or even falling into the ocean. The internet and online culture has damaged people's brains. Unfortunately, this is not an exaggeration and is why I stay clear from most social media. Real people lost everything and we have people making things up. It's sad to see and if things don't change being in the US doesn't seem like a realistic option moving forward.

      it's true, and also really weird lmao i don't think those people realize just how many people live in California and that they're also regular people? it's so strange that they'll knowingly wish harm upon people just because they don't like the culture or lifestyle or whatever reason it may be

    I 100% agree with what Rhett and Link were saying about returning to X and overall social media. I had just recently, about 1 month ago at minimum, uninstalled X, TikTok, and all of these very toxic, negative social media apps and mentally feel 5x better. X being the worst of them in my opinion. It's mind boggling to me that you can feel good in one moment then open X and read and watch all of these horrible things about everything because that is all that is portrayed. You're very much right Link. It is scary.

    I’m in Oregon and we had a similar situation in 2020… and I didn’t realize I still have some ptsd from that period of time until I listened to this.
    I’ve never been in a hurricane or a major earth quake, so I can’t compare how that feels.
    But the fear that these fires bring, even when you are in a “safe” zone… the skies are still weird colors and you came see and smell the smoke. It’s really scary and part of your brain is on high alert constantly.

      Even though I lived in Oregon my entire life and experience the wildfire season every year, it didn’t hit home (literally Ashland) until the Alameda fire where my family and I had to evacuate as we were in the oak street path just before the fire turned north to talent, that I realized I never had a go bag or anything. The fires never really hit Ashland and ever since, even though I now live in Chicago, I have so much more awareness for having those things ready. I completely understand how living in an area that is susceptible but rarely ever impacted doesn’t make you think about the need for being able to get up and go

    Just coming up on the end of the podcast now and tearing up hearing about the people pulling together and also how the GMM crew treat eachother 🩷
    As an aussie it has been an interesting experience, as we always have bush fires this time of year, but I feel like I have seen and heard more stories from these fires. So in regards to social media I am reflecting on why that might be.
    I am glad there are good people like you in the US, I hope you are ready to stand up in the next few years, I am scared for you and the impact that your country's choices are going to have on the world.
    Wishing you all the best, thank you for your content and your hearts, please keep sharing your thoughts, light, positivity, creativity, and reflections with the world. Your growth and perspectives (especially as straight white men in the US) are so important for people to hear right now!

    I feel like Link has been through it and is either really tired or not okay. My hometown of Paradise burned down in the Camp Fire back in 2018 and my childhood home was lost. My family thankfully made it out but this was all reminiscent of how fast things can happen. I'm in So Cal now in the High Desert not too far away and was horrified for you all. It's a traumatic event. I'm the same age as you guys and like you were saying, when we were kids, this isn't something we even thought about. Hearing Rhett share about the stark contrast between his childhood and his kids' makes me feel so seen. I'm a bit younger than you guys (I'll be 36 this year) and I have a 12 year old. It occurred to me yesterday that by the time the orange dictator is out of office, they will have spent half of their life with him as president. All they know is fear, destruction and uncertainty. Admittedly, I got to the jaded, awake phase earlier as a millennial--I was my child's age when 9/11 happened--but I don't know what to say to my kid except "look for the good" and "be the good" because dude... I can't lie to them and pretend everything will be okay.

His wife collects fine wines. They loaded up their vehicle with guitars and wine. They said it took forever to decide which guitars and wine to save. It’s weird what people decide they need to take with them in an emergency. They were lucky and there was no damage to their home. My heart breaks for everyone who lost so much.
