My father talked about this fire when I was growing up. He was 21 and hired to help in the clean up. Dad owned a small house on Norway Drive on Mt Desert outside of Bar Harbour. Dad sharpened saws for the crews that cleaned up. My uncle worked for the Maine Highway Dept. and I remember being five visiting from Montana and horrified to see my favorite uncle all black from fighting fires. That would have been in 1961. I grew up in Montana. Our best friend was Omar Sallee, whose nephew was one of the sole survivors of the Mann Gulch fire. All that history of fire in Maine and Montana--I go bat shit crazy every time I see somebody being STUPID with cigarette butts or outdoor burning or planting combustible vegetation next to their house in rural Montana. Be smart, stay safe...
