I might be wrong, but I think it was one of the bosses in a monad passage, actually. I remember there being two of those castle shadows with an unusually high amount of hp at some point there. I think them having so much hp is to encourage people to use insta-kill moves since they have so much hp and are weak to either light or dark.

Yes and one of the more notoriously difficult ones at that. Combining it with a Reaper is just rubbing salt in the wound.
