    Likely was a relay controller and MG set in the original installation. The traction machine is in amazing condition, communicator is very clean, no arcing from the brushes. I am curious if this maybe a mini traction machine, with the lower DC voltage.

    Seems very odd seeing the commutator at that end of the motor! I must have seen thousands of commutators in 42 years as an Otis engineer, but the comms were always at the other end.

      For a few months I loved staring at pictures of universal/brushed dc motors because I thought they looked nice. Now I don't.

      That's the centrifugal governor. It is calibrated to active the car safeties if the elevator overspeeds.
