  • Probably one of the coolest machine rooms I’ve been in. There’s an A. B. See in the corner, a bunch of Gurney elevators, and a few Otises!
btw the statute of limitations expired

Nothing like smooth running almost completely quiet DC hoist motors.

Years ago you needed a special key to be able to press the hidden floor buttons. It wasn't marked, just a key slot in the panel next to the supervisor maintenance key slot and the fire key slot.
And the supervisor key and fire key also gave you access to the hidden floors
I used to have a master key that worked for most of the elevators for the supervisor and the hidden floor key slot.
Unfortunately 30 years ago they started replacing the keys with RFID security systems and those can't be bypassed.
I tried to get a fire key but those are not available. At least I was not able to find anyone willing to sell one.
I had that key for safety more than anything else.
After being stuck in an elevator when the power cut out for 30 seconds the elevator got stuck and they took 2 hours to get me out.
I found out later that the supervisor key would have reset it to allow it to move to the next floor and I went searching for a master key that day.
    I miss the old days

Original DC motors are preserved with the use of modern DC choppers

Wow big motor for 9 floors and even 15 floors. It’s like installing an Otis Skyrise, Schindler 7000, or Kone MX32 in a medium rise building and malls

Those with the numbers 57, 58 and 59 (and 56) are freight cars. Hence the motors are bigger.
Andrew Reams rode 56 when he was given a tour, and they also showed some components on 57.

Everything was over built and expensive but had high value for that! Today everything is built with minimalist ways of design to maximize profits!

@@agems56 especially by going MRL which it will not be as reliable as the Machine Room elevator (maybe except Mitsubishi but still)

Nowadays they use variable frequency drives with brushless 3 phase induction motors.

I’m not entirely sure but It’s probably used to communicate with somebody inside the elevator. It could just be a regular phone too

iam surprised by, how many DC elevator motrs i see. until on youtube i had seen only induction motors, in two speed configuration. this looks little bit mor costly on maintenance and power. ac/dc drivers has in own consumption, and i shall not forget on losses on commutator and brushes. neverless the lifespan of brushes. 100-200 motorhours.

DC motors were popular here in the US, for a while they could do better speed control than AC. Of course, now VFDs exist, so I don't think anyone is installing DC new any more...
