the best simulation i've found to understand ---- how the moving part comes closer or moves away from the spinning part.. this is really informative. Thank you sir.
There is a big difference between how the scooter belt works and a CVT belt. A "normal" belt pulls from the drive pulley (or sheave) to the output, a CVT belt pushes. As a result the 2 belts are built completely different, a belt that pulls is much easier to make as the tension keeps it running straight, so as long as the internal strands are strong enough, it holds together. A CVT belt has to push straight without buckling, it does this by the drive elements locking into a solid mass when under compression.
Thomas I don't care about negative comments. Some people only want to hear what they think is right. You have done a splendid job of teaching something we did not know. thumbs up to you.
there is a difference between engineering and innovative engineering. most true innovative engineering is dead these days. the reason comes down to is "if you have an idea then likely someone else has already come up with it in the past" 95% of engineers typically work off existing systems and designs make small adjustments in order to reach design objectives. there is that few percent that produce something really innovative and unique, that's where the art aspect comes in, and it's rare.
Great video here !! By far the most complete and simplest explanation found concerning CVT. Thank you for the last part explaining also that modern cars use oil pump to adjust position of the sheaves. I came here because of that part and found the right explanation Thank you so much !!
I never understood the CVT at first but after seeing how it runs and how the oil creates thru the oil pump and how it's made from a variable stand front now I see it . Thanks for explaining it really helps
I always thought a CVT some how used some type of single conical gear that meshed with a single input gear that used a centrifugal device to slide the input gear up the conical gear. Huh, learn something new every day.
Speed Selector makes variable speed pulleys that replace the Reeves and Hi-Lo pulleys. I think they went out of business. A lot of them are in stock or they can make a custom if needed. They have an actual engineer to help you if needed. Very helpful.
CVT, ( Continuously Variable Transmission) a dutch invention in the '50 (1953-1958). Made by Hub van doorne the founder of the dutch truck brand DAF. In Holland whe call the CVT: Variomatic
Your videos are fantastic! It makes learning so much easier when one can see an animated visual of the component working. Bravo! Keep it up.. This is my new favorite channel. Waiting for a video on locking and limited slip differentials.
All I really cared to know was how the pulley sheaves moved towards each other and vice versa. All the animations I watched earlier represented them as shape morphing solids, as if being inflated and deflated by air. Of course that's likely not practical. This video explains that well. I'm both impressed and enlightened, and inspired as well. Now that I know how it works, how do the steel plates of the belt not wear as they slide along the moving sheaves? Don't tell me the whole system is bathed in transmission oil.
Yes, the concept of the CVT is much more efficient than automatics and manuals. Problem is, all those on the market as of now have issues sizing correctly according to the speed of the engine and driver's foot.
Produces lots of metal shavings under constant aggressive driving conditions. Also when full torque is applied, the belt suffers. Belt is driven by friction alone. Still a long way to perfection.
Nice Video, good explanation! Just a little thing: at 2:40 (exaktly at 2:57 ) you state zentrifugal weight movement for the pulleys won't work for automobiles. That is not fully correct, because all DAF 33, 44, 55, 66 and all VOLVO 66 and all VOLVO 343 Versions equipped with CVT worked with centrifugal weight as main shifting mechanism. Powered up to 70 hp they worked like a charm in my experience. They had an additional negative pressure switch to make some shifting control possible (for engine breaking downhills, for accelerating with high engine rpm and for overdrive at medium speeds) but they still drive great when this switch mechanism fails completely.
+Thomas Schwenke The idea of utilizing centrifugal forces acting on clutch pads is excellent for moving the moveable face of pulley. I wonder why car manufacturers don't apply it anymore for modern cars. Is it unreliable, hard to maintain ?
Great video and explanation. I find the metal push belt working metal pullies hard to fathom. I gather there’s no slip involved. What happens when the transmission is in neutral or at traffic lights?
A simple solution to limiting slippage in a high torque requirement would be to increase the rotational velocity of the input side of CVT gearbox and then gear it down on the output side. Sun gears could easily provide a 8:1 step up and step down ratio. Therefore reducing the torque required to be transmitted via the belt by the same ratio. Of course the CVT gearbox will need to run at very high rpm which may compromise the life of the gearbox. Thoughts?
Yes, very much so. Manufactures have not figured out how to make a reliable CVT yet. If you are going to reliability, simplicity, and low maintenance manual is the way to go!
Do I even need to bring up the flures on a traditional auto transmission? If you want go go by statistical failure rate CVT are vastly more reliable. Dont just blinded throw out accusations
I agree with the posts that prefer videos without music. The music is annoying, usually much too loud and add nothing to the content. Most are the bump-bump, bumpty-bump type that's extremely distracting. If I select a video and hear this type of music I turn it off immediately and seek another with clear narration and interesting content. mrpete222 is one of the very best that uses no music with his interesting "Jimmy Stewart" voice and useful information.
Hi, excellent. Thanks for your comment. I just like the music and it will still be part of my animations in the future. So, feel free to look for other content. Best wishes :)
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. Your animations are just incredible and your explanations are concise and understandable. Keep em coming! (PS: I liked your original voice much better than this American version. It's more "soothing" and easier to listen to.)
I really thought it would be an expandable pulley that widens as a flared rod pushes through the center. But seeing this design makes me incredibly more uneasy
Thank you for explaining how CVT work now I know why so many people hate CVT Because when it comes down to it it sucks it’s a cheap way for people to save money or companies have everyone look at it
Thankyou my dear friend... Your video... It just cleared out my doubt... Thanks ... I'd subscribed at that second... Loved it man... Continue to do such job... And these 3d animations.. hats off..!!!
So far the best CVT explanation I saw, many others fail to explain how the belt interacts with shaft and V shape details. Well done!
You are right. Some don't explain how to move the moveable face of pulley which I want to know more detail.
Yeah this was a really nice illustration, but plastic kid at the end was creepy AF.

Nice description of the distinction between rubber belts, segmented metal belts, and chains.
best CVT explanation video.
Thanks, TS, very helpful video, well done (just cut out the music!)
vj vino krishnamoorthy totally agree
vj vino krishnamoorthy
Yeah it actually explains the method of operation and construction in detail it's nice to see as before I had no clue how a cvt did it thing.
The simplest video on CVT that i have seen so far. Thank you.

now i understand how it works, for many searches, this is the best explaination.. thanks ..
Short, simple, to the point with follow-up options. Well done Mr. Schwenke.
One of the best explanation I have ever seen. Now I get how CVT actually works after watching this video, thanks to admin
Thomas I don't care about negative comments. Some people only want to hear what they think is right. You have done a splendid job of teaching something we did not know. thumbs up to you.
You are very smart!! My Nissan has a CVT and I now completely understand how it works! Well done man!
very interesting...
Engineers are not unlike artist. You have to be pretty creative to conceive such things.

But also have a special hate for millwrights

Wonderful animation of CVT. Kudos to developers.
Thanks for amazing explanation
excellent, short and sweet. direct info, no wasted fluff.
WOW! Genuinely impressed by the explanation and animation
good video, really helps out people like me that own a car that has a cvt but don't know the first thing about it.

great simple explanation of the CVT. Thanks for putting this together

CVT, ( Continuously Variable Transmission) a dutch invention in the '50 (1953-1958). Made by Hub van doorne the founder of the dutch truck brand DAF. In Holland whe call the CVT: Variomatic

much better design than default gearbox, but bad thing that belt can slide at some point when high torque is applied and pulley is moving
+jetcarq that's the problem of most CVTs
Yes, the concept of the CVT is much more efficient than automatics and manuals. Problem is, all those on the market as of now have issues sizing correctly according to the speed of the engine and driver's foot.
You are the best to explain things like this bro. outstanding animations and narration.
could you explain cvt's have constant engine rpm while other transmissions have variable engine speeds?
They do not, the engine rpm will increase and therefore the sheaves move in reaction changing the 'gearing' and outputting the correct power.
A fantastic explanation of how the CVT operates.Well done producer
