Fantastic I've got about 100 types of succulents they're so interesting, your collection is a dream collection I can't have a glasshouse unfortunately but, I enjoyed looking at yours thankyou.
Hello John Roewer, very proud of Australian Cactus Collector, ,love your amazing garden, I'm ling in Sydney, wish to have your garden tour one day. Thanhs for sharing:D
Fantastic collection you have there John! I'm in batemans bay, NSW and although it's warmer than Melb, it's a lot drier. It amazes me how well they do down that way with such cold, wet winters. I started collecting about 10 years ago and it's become an obsession :)
Wonderful video. Gives encouragement to a novice cactus grower like me Interesting to see such a extensive collection growing In Melbourne. Shows what is possible for my location in the foothills of the snowy mountains
I really enjoyed this video John you are such a down to earth person anything goes and that is why have so much success Plants love that kind of relaxed environment Keep up the good work
I do think you got cactus, Love how your garden grows! Right on not to much water and good drainage. Cactus are like our dear and faithful dogs , they are sooo forgiving.🐩 🐶🐺🐕. 🦋

Oh WOW! Such an INCREDIBLE collection John has :-) they are all so beautifully grown and potted up, absolutely outstanding collection :-) Thank you for sharing and thank you to John :-) Sending you guys loads of love and loads of happy growing from Ireland for a FANTASTIC day ahead XXXXX
***** I know it would be amazing to grow our plants outdoors instead of having to grow them indoors, it would be such a dream and we wouldn't have to worry about always finding enough space for them inside the house and enough light haha! XXXX
you have a magnificent collection and I was awed by some of the euphorbias.I could recognise stenoclada, enopla, ingens and grandicornis. Can you please reveal the ids of the others?
krish rao ... I’ll have to watch the video again and get back to you . I actually lost quite a few of the smaller euphoria in storage last winter while we we between houses. Most of the BIG stuff I sold. ☹️
john seen ur fabolous collection, i am succulent and cactus lover, but pls also in a episode explain how to grow cactus and succulents in a simple way, thanks for a nice video
sudhir bedi .... why not check out and see if you have a society close by? There are a few little tricks you’ll learn as you go but it’s definitely not rocket science. Too much typing for these old fingers to try and explain it all. 😏👍🌵
sherry brewton hi ..... apparently there will be😉. I’ve sold up and started again. The producer of this video is interested in filming the new place. I took many of my plants with me.
Your garden is GORGEOUS!! I live in Northern California, and grow a lot of succulents and cacti. Just curious if you used a particular fertilizer on your plants, or if it's just your climate?
Olivia's Orchids & More .... just a sprinkle of a general plant food in my potting mix, and a half strength liquid fertiliser once during each growing season.
Have move from that location ... that garden was well protected from frosts and harsh weather so no cover was needed. Just made an effort too "keep the Mexican's dry" during Winter.
Your plants are so healthy. What do you recommend for soil preparation and drainage? I live in Ca. so not sure how the climate compares to where you are but we get lots of hot sunny days, very little rain and nights as cold as 35 degrees in the winter. What ingredients go into your soil mix for plants that will go into the ground? Thx
Succulent/cactus mix. You may make your own mix with (Regular soil + sand + some clay). Cactus are great drought resistant plants! GREAT CHOICE! Namasté. Happy gardening!
hi. im just a begginer here in Victoria. i have a few plants and getting interested in succulents and cactus. you said the most important is drainage- where do you buy your small pebbles? do you add a bit of potting mix to it? thanks.
Michael Marcelo ..... hi Marcelo. I source a lot of my soils etc from “Daisy’s Garden Supplies” .... as long as isn’t any silt in with the stones any mix that tickles your fancy should be fine.
I under stand how he felt when he start going to the CS Society here in Melb . I use to belong to the society a quite a few years ago and that if you you were a new comer there that it was hard to get too know people there even if you tried to interact with them , unless you know some that has been there for quite a while to introduce you to the other members and have someone to communicate with . I didn't know anyone there and i ask some of the qualified members that have been growing cacti for a number of years what type of mixed do they use and other question ? There response was they just walked off and they were fussy who they spoke too and of course i felt disheartened ... The idea of joining the society was to learn and make new friends but it was difficult and after a number of years that's when they moved to there new location , where they are now i stopped going cause it was too far and traffic horrendous ... I hope thing are a lot different there and welcome new members with open arms and are helping in answering any of there question that they ask if possible .... I still grow cacti and succulent to this day as i have been growing them over 25 years ... I do have some of Bert's cacti's from Ferntree Gully ,Bert was a wonderful guy and full of knowledge ... He had a wonderful collection of plants especially his Areocarpus and his Lophaphora Williamisi especially the crested form that he had , at that time he was into growing Haworthia and selling seed and plant .... Thought i would put in my two bobs worth in .... Cheers ..
Thanks for taking the time to put your two bobs worth in. We're disappointed that your early experience with our society was not the best. Being more than 10 years ago, not many of our current members could be held responsible and you are more than welcome to meet us again to experience our current group. We meet every 4th Tuesday of the month at the Mount Waverley Youth Hall and anyone is welcome as a visitor if they are curious about our group and what our meetings are like. We're sure that you'll find it a friendly and interesting group. Hope to see you soon.
Looks like you joined the society before I did. I was first aware of the CSSA in 2011 when I visited their spring show. I joined on that day and went to the first meeting a few months afterwards. I met some good people some of which are now my good friends. Bert Copus whom you mention I was also fortunate to meet. I made a video of his collection ua-cam.com/video/xcWkzHuxbYw/v-deo.html on my first visit. He was a great man and loved by all who knew him.
It would really be worth your while to check out a monthly gathering again. There has been a shift in personnel at the management level with a much younger group now in charge. I believe that it still falls on the individual to step out of their comfort zone and interact with the members. Join in on excursions and volunteer to help at gatherings and events. I have learnt over the last 10 plus years that the hour or so before the official meetings get underway is the only time many of the attendees get to see their society friends, and this time disappears quickly. I don’t believe anyone is intentionally rude even if it appears this way to some. Get involved and don’t just hide in the background waiting for things to happen …. much like day-to-day life really. Cheers John
chrisJ wake ..... sorry for being so slow to answer. It’s aloe polyphylla. I’ve managed to keep 3 of the larger ones with we me after we moved house. Thanks for your interest.

John,do you cover your plants during winter time ? Just curious coz all your plants are so healthy.

+Baby Bear The main thing to keep in mind wether you are growing in ground or soil is drainage, always good drainage.
Succulent/cactus mix. You may make your own mix with (Regular soil + sand + some clay). Cactus are great drought resistant plants! GREAT CHOICE! Namasté. Happy gardening!
Doesn't clay make your medium retain water? I thought the goal with a cactus mix was to make it porous.
