If you have ever owned a GM four wheel drive vehicle then there is a good chance you have had a front axle shaft seal leak. We replaced the RH output shaft seal on a Tahoe but it is the same for Silverado, Sierra,Suburban and Yukon. Part one shows details on the tear down and part two with guide you through the reassembly.
I’m sick of everyone fast forwarding through the tough part! That’s why we watch these videos!!!! We hit a road block where you skip through!
Just did this job and lower ball joint. Great thing about Alaska is the sunlight in the summer. Got started at 8 pm an finished at 4AM . I had the factory lower ball joints and had to file it down a little too get them out. Not too bad for my 06 Silverado. 264,000 miles with factory lower ball joints. I took my time and cleaned up all the gunk. Thanks for this video. Auto e-clinic
For re filling the gear oil I used a straw at the tip of bottle and it worked perfectly.
Did this job today on a 2003 Yukon XL 4WD. Went exactly as your video. Thanks for a clear, concise demonstration on how to do this.
Just did my 1998 seal and everything was exactly as you guys demonstrated. Thanks. I appreciated the video as a guide.
+Derren P Thanks! I am glad you were able use our video for help.
So this is the same procedure for the obs trucks? Gotta do mine.
loganator78r yes it’s the same exact as the gmt400
Thank you for making this video! I just noticed my '05 Silverado has started leaking. Now I know how to repair it. Where did you get the anaerobic sealant and what fluid do you use in the dif?
In case it helps you, outboard motors/ stern drives are filled from the drain hole (seems odd, but it prevents air bubbles from forming in the gear case preventing the oil from going in and filling completely). They sell a hand pump which fits into an oil bottle, which is the same as gear lube. You can use the pump to fill the dif or gear box with an attached hose. Much easier (less messy too) than trying to squeeze the bottle to get the oil in.
I just asked Napa Auto Parts for anaerobic sealant and they had it. Most front diffs and rear diffs use 80-90W oil. I put anaerobic sealant on my rear axle seals on my mustang 30,000 miles ago when I changed them out. Had no issues with leaks.
DO NOT BEAT THE GEAR ROD OUT OF THE HOUSING! This will bend the 2 washers which secure the backend of the gear to the housing. Take the extra time and use a pick to disengage the C-Ring out of its pocket. Work the C-Ring up the gear shift to remove.

Thanks for the link to your video. I like your method a lot better. As GM tech do you guys use a slide hammer on the left side? And, does the circle clip on the left side ever come displaced?
@@buddyvann2944 This is not my video. This is one I found that explains the process better. As far as the driver side...rent a axle puller so you don't damage any parts. You can use a pry bar, but you risk the snap ring being stuck inside the diff
You the man
That is true on the and up models.
To make your nice quick to the point video even better, adding torque specs, Good job 👍
Thanks 👍
@@AutoEclinic and bolt sizes for quick socket selection...
Anaerobic or not, it's still silicone rubber sealer, just a different catalyst. It still won't stick to an oily surface. Wiping won't get it. Use Lacquer thinner or brake cleaner (on both sealing surfaces) and get it sano clean. Better to use shellac (or Permatex aircraft head gasket cement) in that application. Oil is the enemy of silicone unless it is completely cured before it sees oil.
Thanks for the help! I'm doing this on an '06 Escalade right now, and the inside is a little simpler for the full-time AWD version. That solenoid and actuator assy. isn't there. There's nothing on the end of the axle that comes out with it. The piece that engages the lock ring stays in the diff. It seems that you could just hammer out the axle without removing the housing (just like the LF), so long as you have the room to get it out. You might have to remove a sway bar end link to get the clearance, and even then, I'm not sure. I did have to hammer on the axle flange to get it to release from the housing, where you just slipped it off.
The gasket would leak if you hammer it..so it's best to take it ALL out.
This video made me damage the washers that the lock ring pushes past. Had to buy new ones.

Part numbers, fluids, and sealant types would be helpful
Any parts store can help you with this; the seals are cheap, the gear oil is too.
When replacing that bearing does it come out or do you end up replacing the whole axel shaft?
Thank you this a first for me and your video has helped out a lot. I haven't done the right side yet I afraid I will loose something and it won't be right when it goes back together. but Thank you
I forgot to put that washer back on that you did at 1:06. Could that cause a leak/roaring sound?
Nice video but I don't recommend using a metal hammer on housings. No matter how long you've done this.
is the seal itself for the other side the same part or are they different in size? sorry if that is a stupid question, I just have no clue and need to do both sides...
yep same for both sides. just done mine today
Thanks for the video looks like I get to involve myself into another project on our 1993 sierra front axle ughhhhh, Have to take doors off too to replace rocker panels.
thomas g Body work was something Micheal didn't get into. His dad however owned a body shop for year.
When hammering a seal like that put grease behind the spring so it does not pop off
Thanks!!!!! Big help!
I am having trouble getting the snap ring tapped down on to the axle (1 minute into video) It seems to be snagging. any suggestions? Thanks
Did you ever get it figured out? I’m struggling with the exact same thing. Broke one retainer ring trying to get gear over shaft. Took a retainer ring, gear, and shaft from a donor rear to make a second attempt and I’m still having the same trouble. I saw someone say somewhere that the retainer ring can get worn and won’t allow the gear and shaft to slide together, but I’ve only seen one person say that. I’m stumped, and I’ve been building cars since I was a kid, 47 now
I can't get the housing to slip back on to save my life.. Any tips? I wish I could just take the damn bracket off
Excellent video, thank you.
What do I have going wrong. Putting it back up and in is proving to be very difficult. I have it loosened up on that outter support bracket but still doesnt seem to be enough room yet to slide it in.
How much money would you expect to pay a dealership or local garage mechanic for the service? Thank you.
How many hours of labor work on doing this kind of job would you say?
This video basically the same for a 2008 sierra?
Do you have any suggestions for performing this on a 97 Tahoe? It has the big round plates instead of the star shaped ones where the CV shaft connects. DO I have to remove the hub and half shaft to in order to remove the housing where the seal resides?
Got 04 colorado , changing cv shaft , the differential side of the shaft won't come out , lots of play in that end . seal , bearing , idk wuts up
I like to clean my part out side of case is brake cleaner is ok to clean the outside of it
Is it the same thing for the left side?
Any idea why my 04 sierra front wheels wont engage? My actuators and front drive shaft lock and work but the wheels remain spinning freely in 4wd?
All good except for the refill of diff fluid! The level is supposed to be a certain depth below the fill plug as the fluid will expand under temp and pressure probably making one of the three seals leak all over again. C’mon man!
I was going to send these videos to a friend in another state to try to walk him through this process, and then i saw how "shade tree" this video was. You guys should really be using lead hammers or dead blows for stuff like this. Also, youre not supposed to beat the hell out if it to remove the lockring.... just remove the lock ring or youll be replacing that as well.
Have an 07 Silverado. Just did this job, internal parts in the shaft are slightly different. Put it all back together and now when I engage 4wd and pick up speed it sounds like the gears aren’t meshing as they should. Any pointers?
Did the 4wd end up working?
Did mine and this video is exact for my truck. Once all was done I put it in 4wd and low howling went away. Dash shows 4wd on BUT strange part is I can turn on dry pavement just fine. No idea if my 4wd engaging or not.
I'm in the process of doing mine but I'm having an issue. I have a 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT 4x4. And I had to actually remove that snap ring on the collar because I was bending the shit out of my washers trying to beat that shaft on. I have it off now and I have a seal on the housing but I also have a collar with needle bearing on the inside that is on the shaft. That needle collar seems like it just slides up and down the shaft when it's in the housing. I have a new seal and needle collar. Plus my housing doesn't have that anaerobic sealant, it's an actual gasket. Am I doing it right? Do I just put everything back together the way I took it apart? If you've done one of these and can help me out I'd greatly appreciate it. I can't find nothing online about it. All the information is on the ones that just have a seal that you bang out. Definitely not possible with a 2008. Thank you greatly for your time!!!!!

Stay gold.
Do have a part number or a link to where I can get the red sealant u used to seal the diff back up? Thanks!

My shaft housing is brok and I have a new one. I have to put the guts from the old into the new I don't not know how please help my business is on hold till I get it fixed and I'm brigidybroke
I wish yall had a video on a 2010 silver 2500
Worked on a 98 gmc suburban slt
thanks need to do this on both sides of mine.
We chose to video the most difficult side for demonstration. They are notorious for leaking.
didn't even bother cleaning the areas... all the dirt old debris and mud smh!
Thank you, good quick informative video. both parts 1 and 2
And the drivers side????
How difficult is it to do the right side seal?
How about a video on the bearing in there.
I'd settle for a disassembly clip.

how much will you charge for the job?
I would never use red silicone again
this is same on gmc sierra 08 4x4?
I noticed you all don't show the cone shaped washer or the axle retaining washer being installed. This was a bitch for me as I was unsure watched your video and showed everything but this.
what kind of grease did you redo it with?
80W/90 gear oil
I think this is the part # 22761722 Output Shaft Seal . www.gmpartsonline.net/auto-parts/2013/chevrolet/silverado-1500/hybrid-trim/6-0l-v8-electric-flex-engine/front-drive-axle-cat/axle-shafts-and-joints-scat
Not very detailed
