I'm a cricket player from England. That thing he did with his bat on the ground... He was taking guard. The two sets of stumps are in line with each other. Knowing where the stumps are is a big part of batting. The most common one is centre (middle of the middle stump) but there are others. The umpire will confirm whether the batsman is right and will direct him if not, tell him where to move his bat. The batsman then marks that line with the spikes on his shoes so he knows where that line is. That's what he was doing.

The strike rate means that how many runs the batsman scored per 100 balls... It is a calculation of the total amount of runs he scored in carrer and how many balls he faced while scoring those runs...
Example: if any batsman scored 1400 runs in his carrer and faced 1000 balls then the calculation is,
    (1400÷1000) x 100 = 140
    His strike rate is 140

YORKER:When a fast bowler bowls a full ball aimed straight into the toes(shoes) of the batsman....and hence the batsman cannot get under the ball to Hit it far!!! A Yorker usually fetches a wicket or a dot ball(no run)......It's a great ball, but VERY DIFFICULT to EXECUTE!!!!! Especially Under pressure!! REASON: If a bowler tries a Yorker in a close game....and he misses his radar, it will become a FULLTOSS to a batsman...who will most probably smoke it out for a 4 or a 6!!!!

    • @AstrophileRider
      @AstrophileRider 5 років тому

yorker can be converted to full toss by nice footwork, or else you can manipulate it if you have enough skills.. or you can just duck it.. or direct it for singles.. your theory is correct about how its done and tough it is to do.. but dot or wicket depends on batsman, how good he is.

Just gonna comment on a few things.
Firstly, when he was dragging his foot on the ground he was marking where the middle stump is. That’s what the bowlers try to hit. The three stumps
Secondly the fielders and umpires switch sides depending if it’s a left or right handed batter
And lastly catching the ball in the stand is a big thing in cricket. You can literally win money if you do at certain times. And you have to give the ball back. You can’t keep it.

Your strike rate is the number of runs you score divided by the number of balls you face, multiplied by 100.
    Runs scored
    ------ x 100 = Strike rate
    Balls faced
The higher the strike rate, the faster the batsman has scored runs. In this case, Chris Gayle’s T20 strike rate is 149 which is classed as very good.

A 'Yorker' is when the bowler aims for the feet. Really hard to do. Because if the bowler gets the length slightly off, the batter could easily hit you for 6. But if you can hit the feet, it's SO hard to dig those out and not get out.

Replying to a few things you mentioned…
    - Strike rate = average runs scored per 100 balls faced. in this format (T20) anything above a strike rate of 135 is pretty impressive.
    - The Big Bash is Australia's primary T20 competition
    - Partly why Gayle doesn't have to swing hard is because his bat is around 3 pounds
    - The crowd is not meant to keep the ball in cricket, because the condition of the ball plays a big part in the game…but people do sometimes…
    - Yorker is a ball that pitches right at the batsman's feet

    @Average American
    1. Batting average means - the total runs he has scored from all the matches of particular format of the game he/she played divides by number of total matches of that format of the game he/she has played. (for each format of the game this average will be separately calculated)
    2. Balling average is the same this as in #1 but substitute number of wicked by a bowler instead of runs by a batter. (for each format of the game this average will be separately calculated)
    2. Formats of the game. Rules may vary across formats (from shortest duration to the longest duration)
    i. 6 a side matches - In which both teams get only 6 overs per side to bat/ball)
ii. 20/20 matches - each side get to bat and bowl 20 overs
iii. 50 over match or often called "One-day match" - each side get to bat and bowl 50 overs
iv. 5 days match or "Test match" - The game will be played for 5 days at a stretch. Each side get to bat 2 innings.
No balling/batting duration/number restrictions, goal is to beat the combined total
of both innings of one team by the other team.
    3. Batting strike rate - How many runs a batsman has scored for 100 balls he has faced considering his previous played matched (for each format of the game this strike rate will be separately calculated)
    4. Balling strike rate - How many runs a bowler has given before he takes a wicket (runs scored against him divided by wickets he has taken) . (for each format of the game this strike rate will be separately calculated)
    5. An Over - consist of 6 deliveries by the bowler (same across formats)
    Cricket Slang
    ----------------------
    1 A Duck - means a batsman gets out for 'o' runs
    2. Nelson - means when the scoreboard shows the team total score as "111". Which considered to be bad luck

Strike rate is how many runs a batsman would score in 100 balls, so the statisticians can work out how many runs a batsman has scored and how many balls they've faced and work out how many runs per 100 balls. Higher is better. The thing he was doing at 7:15 was marking his "guard" with the spioe in his shoe, to give him a visual marker for where he will stand. Most batsmen take their guard on middle or middle and leg, and can then step away from or in front of their stumps if needed.

when the batsman scrapes a mark in the ground it is so he knows where to line up in front of the stumps (take guard). By lining up in the same place he can judge if the ball will hit the stumps and so can select the correct shot or defensive stroke. unlike baseball shot selection is key in cricket, in that way it is like tennis.

Strike Rate is the number of runs a batsman would score if he bats 100 balls at his current score. So if someone is batting on 30 of 20 balls, his strike rate is 30/20 * 100 = 150. So at his current scoring rate, he would score 150 runs in 100 balls. 149.1 strike rate is he would get around those many runs in 100 balls. It is an average value after many of his innings, so its in decimals.

A Yorker is a delivery that bounces just near your feet. It’s hard to get get under a Yorker and hit for a six, you also cannot push it for a boundary. It’s generally the best run-stopping ball. When directed with pace and some inswing, it can also be very difficult to keep out and can get a batsman bowled.

A strike rate is the amount of runs a batsman would score on average after facing 100 balls. It's used in limited over formats of the game because the average might not be as important tactically. If you have an average of 45 runs, it doesn't look impressive, but in conjunction with a strike rate of 200 means it would only take 20 balls to get to that average, making the player a power hitter (for example)

A yorker is a delivery that's meant to land pretty much around the batsman toes, length wise. The bowler can choose which line he wants to put it, but it's not the easiest delivery. Mess it up and it can turn into a full toss (a delivery where the ball doesn't bounce before reaching the batsman), and bowling against a batsman like Gayle he'll whack that ball clean out of the stadium.

Marking is line at the crease, 3 stumps behind you and you can use the middle or the leg stump for alignment towards the bowlers.

I was at the England New Zealand game at the Oval a couple of years ago, and towards the end of the game Liam Plunkett smashed a six, it was literally going to land in my lap, I was all ready to catch it and some bloody Kiwi in the row in front dived across 3 seats and proceeded to drop it.
He claimed it was anyone’s to catch, we disagreed. Fortunately we got the tickets from my friend who works for Sky sports cricket and he immediately sent us all the angles of this guy stealing my catch. We showed him and made him admit he was wrong. You could even pinpoint the moment in the replays that I called the guy a dick. It was amazing.
In retrospect he probably did me a favour - the game started at midday and this happened at about 8pm. I’d had about 15 Guinness by that point.

Batsmen ask the umpire to tell them where their bat is in relation to the stumps. A common stance is to ask for the line where the bat is in front of middle stump. They then mark the position with their bat or their shoes, which is what you were asking about when Gayle was marking his guard.

batting strike rate is the number of runs a batsman scores per 100 balls faced i.e. the batsman's rate (speed) of scoring. The stat presented is for their career in t20 cricket or maybe just in this tournament or just in this tournament this year. less than 100 is slow, more than 100 is fast. in t20 all batsmen will try to score at a rate above 100 because there are so few overs they can try and score off every ball without too much fear the innings will end with 10 batsmen out before the full 20 overs are bowled. This is especially true because t20 and 50 over pitches are prepared to be batter friendly with good bounce but little lateral movement off the seam or turn for spinners.

Sometimes you see decent catches in the crowd, but the crowd usually drop the ball. They don't get to keep it. The condition of the ball matters in cricket, so we expect the ball to be returned. If the ball is lost, the third umpire runs on to the field with a box of balls and they try to find one in a similar condition.

Also one of the reasons Chris gayle doesn’t hit so hard is because since the ball is coming in with so much pace if he can find the right spot in the bat the pace will do the rest of the work and since his is swinging slower he has more time to find the right spot on the bat. Sort of an aggression vs precision thing

You gotta understand the bowlers are bowling very quickly. One of the best skills a batsman can have in T20 cricket is the ability to use the balls speed to ensure easier maximum hits. Very often when they hit 6s or big 4s its from placement + using the speed of the ball. Thats why Gayle makes it look so easy. Master of timing

In cricket you don’t always need massive power. If you ‘time’ the shot perfectly, even a whip can go the distance. A push can fly to the boundary too Batting in cricket is more about technique than power. Of course Gayle has incredible power too, but timing is more important. Because the ball is already in the way up and with the fast bowler bowling there is already pace on the ball, properly timed shot just uses the pace on the ball and basically just redirects it. Just power with no timing will generally sky the ball for a catch.

    1. Hes a BIG GUY bout 6'3" 120kg so hes got alot of power
    2. The ball is coming at him at bout 140kmph so he uses some of the balls speed

7:30 Batsmen usually mark the stump they have to take guard of. So they mark it with the spikes on the boot. Here, Gayle had taken guard of the leftmost stump called legstump for a left handed batsman.
Edit: Spectators are not allowed to keep the ball in cricket unlike baseball. They just throw it back to the field of play.

11:34 A yorker is a ball bowled really full near his toes. It is bowled so that the batsman cant get the bat underneath the ball to hit it and get elevation. It is a really good ball to bowl when youre being smacked all over the place. Nearly impossible to hit and since you're bowling it that full, it has a good chance to hit the stumps and get you a wicket.

  • @sgreybe
    @sgreybe 5 років тому

Yeah, so Chris Gayle is from the West Indies, which is an international team made up of players from the Caribbean nations. This match was in the Big Bash, which is an Australian T20 competition where each team may have a few non-Australian players, of which Chris Gayle is one. He has always been a big hitter, and he is a big guy, so when he hits them, they go far. He's been around a long time and has had the most success in the T20 format, probably because he is rumoured to not like running, and prefers to just stand there and smack 'em out the park.
Spectators do get hit by balls going into the stands/grass area, but you are expected, as a spectator, to watch the ball and not turn your back on it when play is on. And some people do catch the ball when it goes into the stands; sometimes there are competitions where you can win a prize if you catch a ball cleanly with one hand whilst in the stands/on the grass spectators' area..
