There are two sides of the cricket field as the bowler comes in; the leg-side (or on-side) and the off-side. So for a left handed batsman like Gayle, the leg-side will be to his right. The power of his shot is easiest and safer for him to drive through to his left; To counteract this, the fielding side might put all 9 outfield players on the leg-side, and bowl at his leg stump.(The three stumps: leg, middle, and off stump) The bowlers make it look easy, but it is a difficult art to get every ball to be bowled where you want it. There are certain types of delivery of the ball which can restrict a batsman, for example, like a curve ball in baseball, the bowler can use the seam to make the ball swing and pitch around his toes. That is called an "in-swinging Yorker", the idea of the Yorker is to drop the ball fast right on his feet. However, if the ball is "over-pitched", then it becomes a "full toss", which a good batsman can hit easily. Bowlers can also use the "bouncer", so that the batsman is pushed back (sometimes you see really good batsmen like Gayle stand far down the wicket). In the days before helmets it was employed to scare the batsman, by deliberately trying to hit his body or head, and make them retreat, and restrict their shots. Spinners (the slow bowlers) can be used to confuse the batsman. In slow motion, you can see a spinner make the ball rotate; however, at normal speed, it is hard to see which way the ball might turn. A "leg spinner" will bowl the ball out of the back of his hand, and aim to pitch the ball around middle and off. This is where the "Googly" comes in. It is a type of delivery used by leg spinners that looks as though it should turn away from the batsman, but instead it turns back in, and can bowl the batsman, or trap him lbw.

Probably the most intimidating batsman I have seen (been watching cricket since the early 1980s) is still Sir Viv Richards, who was from the West Indies like Chris Gayle. He has the most swag of any cricketer I've ever seen. He would saunter out to bat like a boxer and he would grin at the bowler as they were running in to deliver the ball. He never wore a helmet. He didn't hit sixes as often as Gayle but the game style and format back then was very different. If he played in the modern era he would be smashing things left, right, and centre. But Sir Viv had more than power, he was also incredibly elegant with other types of shot and he could hit the ball anywhere on the ground to avoid fielders. No bowler ever consistently got the better of him, he was just too good. He could hit the fast bowlers and he could hit the slower spin bowlers. He was also excellent in the field. The man is an icon of the game and was so good nobody liked playing him. The West Indies team he played for was just about unbeatable for years and years. Not just because of Viv, they had other excellent players as well, particularly their bowlers, but he's one of those players that stood out as an individual even in an outstanding team.

There is no If in life and blah blah blah. Don't overexaggerate on Viv Richards. Yes, i have seen his batting clips as well. He is just like Virendra Sehwag who knows only how to swing bat according to the ball. There is no class no technique in his batting compare to Sachin, Dravid, Kallis, Ponting, or Virat Kohli. Did you watch how Virat looks classy in his batting? His head, body, elbow, feet and his bat are in a perfect position while hitting the boundary. It means treat to watch. If swing the bat like baseball players and hitting the ball over the boundary is greatest according to you then probably you should watch Cartoon. It means you know nothing about cricket. I am bet you if Viv Richards would have played today then his average would have been not more than 50. Period

@@sahashranshubarik9204 I said the most intimidating batsman I've seen, not the classiest. Sir Viv is exactly that in my lifetime. I said he had a number of elegant shots as well, which he did. His preference was intimidation and it worked, so that's what he did.

Great review. Chris Gayle is awesome.
They only use the one side of the bat. The best place for the ball to hit the bat is in the middle section of the face of the bat. It's where you'll get the most ping of the bat so the ball travels faster. No one uses the reverse side of the bat as it's not flat and your shots would just go Ariel and you'd be caught out. Another batter worth checking for big hitters is Shahid Afridi and AB Divvilliers,
There's some great bowlers out there that have bowled at speeds of up to 100mph like shoab Akhter and Brent Lee who are fast bowlers, then you got other fast bowlers who can bowl at around 75mph to 90 mph but have more control of the ball so they alter the ball position in their hand so they can get swing bowling or reverse swing where the bowl moves in the air and the ball moves/ deviates once ball bounces of the wicket ( Wasim Akram and James Anderson was best at this) and then you get spin bowlers which chris Gayle is and they bowled between 40mph to 65mph but the out a spinning motion on the ball so it spins/deviates once ball bounces, Shane Warne and Murllirhirin Mueledillian was the best spin bowlers..
Will you be doing at review on Thierry Henry?

The bat has a 'sweet spot' which is in the centre from around 5" to say 10" up from the bottom. from there if the 'timing is right the ball will just fly effortlessly. The bowlers of course are trying to make it harder for the batsmen to hit it perfectly and force mishits.

  • @jagdpanther1944
    @jagdpanther1944 5 років тому +1

I forgot to mention, the fast bowlers get the ball to swing through the air by keeping one side of the ball polished, and letting the other side get roughened, which is why you will see players furiously polishing the ball on their trousers, and rubbing their saliva on it during the game (and why they have red marks down their trousers). Also to mention, a great artist of leg-spin bowling was an Australian called Shane Warne. He made spin bowling fashionable again. The guy with the greatest bowling action I think is Lasith Malinga of Sri Lanka, if you want to check him out. Most bowlers bowl over arm, but his arm was kind of side-on (which is legal, you just can't throw the ball like in baseball, or you are called for "throwing" by the umpire). There is a video on UA-cam entitled "Lasith Malinga Yorkers" which demonstrates how great he is.

Interesting. Been learning some about cricket (lifelong baseball fan here) but this would be very illegal in baseball, absolutely no tampering with the ball. Also no foreign substance such as your saliva (that’d be known as a spit ball in baseball) definitely one of the major differences between the two sports.

The bowlers sure can bowl different deliveries ,the fast bowlers can swing the ball both into the batter or away from the batter, he can also pitched it in short so that it rises towards the batter's chest or head. The slowest bowlers are called spinners and some of their varieties are called ARM BALL, DOOSRA, GOOGLY and FLIPPER to name a few. All these different deliveries are used to try and unsettle the batter. Now to your question regarding the bat, you see the bat has the front which is the broadest and flattest area, then you have the sides or edges which are very narrow and then the back which is more oval in shape. So you can hit the ball with the sides or the back, however, you will have little control as to where the ball will go. On the other hand the face or front gives you a lot higher level of the control you need so that's the area you would want to use when batting. It's the first time watching your channel and I'm very impressed, keep it up and hope I was of some help.

They can bat the ball both side. But the other side of bat is angular. So it's risky to bat like that. That can be a simple catch to the opposition. Even the batsman's gloves also cab be use like bat. But they can't intentionally catch the ball while batting.

I'm gonna call you Beautiful American, you are very smart, when you made the observation of the space between the bowler and batter, its 22 yards, so what he is doing is not as easy as it looks, in fact he has revolutionized Cricket, for it use to be most fours and around 2 or three sixes, he hits mostly sixes.
In the original format ''test cricket over 5 days'', he is one of only 4 batsmen, to have scored two triple Centuries ''hundreds'' in test Cricket,, they are Australian Don Bradman from about 1940's, West Indies Brian Lara, West Indies Chris Gayle, and Virenda Sehwag of India more recently, JUST TO WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE, I APPRECIATE YOUR ADVENTUROUS SPIRIT THOUGH.

14:13 The variety of Balls Bowled in Cricket are far more than in baseball & so is the style of Bowling. For example, Fast Bowlers (aka Seamers) Bowl fast or medium pace (between 130-150 km/hr speed) & they Bowl Bouncers, In Swings, Out Swings, Yorkers, etc. Spinners Bowl slow (usually below 100 km/hr speed) & they Bowl Leg Spin, Googly, Off Spin, Doosra, etc

The surface, the air, the way you hold the ball has a lot to do with the behaviour of the ball, how it moves through the air, and which direction it turns after hitting the surface. also the weather has a lot to do with how the ball moves through the air, and moisture, as to how it behaves when hitting the surface. So, just the same way a pitcher has a curve ball, a bowler can let it swing in the air. And depending on how the ball is held with the fingers, when the bowler delivers the ball, and it hit the surface, it can either turn left or right. We also have fast bowlers and slow bowlers.

The bat has a flat surface, so with the speed and unpredictability of the ball,it’s almost not possible to hit the ball with any other part of the bat,
It doesn’t matter where the ball hits the bat, it’s just that the flat broader part of the bat gives the batsman the best chance of connecting with the ball

Bowling... generally most teams will field 3 fast bowlers who send the ball to the batsman at somewhere between 120-160 kph (80-100 mph). While these bowlers primarily rely on speed they aim to bounce the ball on the single seam of the ball which creates variation in bounce. Also as only one ball is used per innings (roughly) one side of the ball will get more worn than the other, once it is established which side is more worn the fast bowlers will attempt to keep the shine on the better side of the ball so as to create a drag in the air on the rough side causing the ball to swing as it is delivered. As well as this fast bowler will vary their speed while maintaining the same delivery action so that the timing of the batsman's reaction can never be automatic. Bowlers may not tamper or effect the ball in any way other than to maintain the shine. Along with the 3 quicks most teams will field one or two spin bowlers, these bowlers tend to bowl at something between 75-95 kph so much slower than the fast bowlers but impart spin onto the ball using finger and wrist positioning and twisting. An off spinner imparts clockwise spin to the ball which causes it to drift away from a right handed batsman then spin into him, a leg spinner imparts counter clockwise spin which causes in drift and away spin once it bounces. Both impart varying degrees of over spin as well which makes the ball drop faster than would be expected creating a change in where the ball bounces. To make things even more complex for the batsmen most spinners will learn, or attempt to learn, a bowling action that looks normal but makes the ball spin in the opposite direction than he would generally spin it (this is called a Wrongun or a Googley) (I know weird right but that's cricket). Again for spinners variations in speed, length of delivery before bouncing and amount of spin are more complications for the batsmen and don't forget at best batsmen have less than 1/2 a second to determine what to do about any given ball, with very fast bowlers much much less than that. However any member of the fielding team CAN bowl what we are talking about here are specialists just like the first 5 batsmen tend to spend most time practising their batting.

There is no rule against using the other face of the bat. Since it is not a flat surface you can't hit the ball in the direction you want to. Front face is a flat surface so it is used to hit the ball as it is easy to get the required direction with it.

  • @jb7221
    @jb7221 5 років тому

The other batsman at the other end is the great Brendon McCullium which if you watch him you will see pretty much the same thing. For a while these 2 guys were taking turns getting the quickest 100 runs. The back of the bat has a curve that peaks right down the middle of the bat. You can use it but controlling were the ball goes is near impossible when you hit it. Bowlers have different types of deliveries they can do but it depends on what type of bowler they are. For example Fast bowlers have different types of deliveries they can choose from than a spin bowler. Fast bower can make the ball curve which is called swing bowling as 9 out of 10 times the ball curves only after it has bounced. It also depends on the weather how much it will curve. For the ball to have to do this it needs to be travelling over a certain speed. Spin bowlers don't reach these speeds. There are more types of bowlers than just fast or what is known as pace bowlers and spin bowlers. There are different types of spin bowlers, off spin and leg spin. Off spin the ball will bounce to the right and left for leg spin. Spin also relies on the state of the wicket( which I mean the area the bowler bowls on and not the sticks). The rougher the ground the more grip the ball gets to be able to turn. There different speed bowlers which have own category so there are Fast, Fast medium, medium fast and medium. They can be seam bowlers or swing bowlers but these days a bowler can do both. Seam bowling is were the bowler will get the ball to bounce on the seam that is around the ball, which sticks out a little and has stiches were it has been joined together. They do this because the ball can bounce in any direction than going straight by a little bit or bounce at different heights. Hope this answers you questions. On a final note I just noticed you have 22k subs. It really wasn't that long ago I sub to you when you just had over 20 subs. So congrats and great job.

But since one side (the 'front' side) is flat, and the other side (ie the 'back') is curved, every batsman always tries to hit the ball with the flat (or: 'front') side.
Using the curved (ie 'back') side would not be very productive.
There is a sweet spot - called: "the middle" - on the front face of the bat. As the nickname suggests, it is in the middle between the sides of the bat, and about two thirds to three quarters of the way down the bat from handle, and measures about a couple of inches across.
Cricket bowlers come in three basic types: -
1). spin (or: 'slow') bowlers - bowling at 50 to 60 mph
    2). fast-medium (or: 'swing') bowlers - 80 to 89 mph
    3). fast bowlers - 90+ mph
Spin bowlers are trying to take advantage of the fact that the ball must bounce off the ground before reaching the batsman. Because of the way they spin the ball, it will deviate and change direction sharply off the ground (this is called "to break") as a result of the spin, bewildering the batsman with flight and spin, causing the batsman to play and miss, or to edge a catch to a fielder.
Swing (or fast-medium) bowlers - sometimes also referred to as 'seamers' - bowl at a healthy (but not express) pace, and aim to take advantage of the seam of the cricket ball to make it curve through the air as well as change direction when it bounces off the ground (known as: "cutting").
Fast bowlers are defined as bowling regularly in excess of 90 mph, and most have a fast-ball of at least 93 to 96 mph. They too can swing and cut the ball, but the pace at which they bowl is usually too fast for the ball to have time to move laterally, very much.
Two fast bowlers in recent history - Brett Lee of Australia and Shoaib Akhtar of Pakistan - have been measured by radar gun bowling deliveries at (or close to) 101 mph. Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson, both of Australia, are not far behind
Back in the 1970s, Australia had two very fast bowlers, in the persons of Denis Lillee and Jeff Thomson. Of these two, Jeff Thomson was noticeably faster, but both bowled at ferocious pace.
Somewhere in the late 1970s, Jeff Thomson was bowling to Tony Greig (the then Captain of England) at the WACA Cricket Ground in Perth WA (or perhaps, the MCG in Melbourne VA?), and bounced one delivery short at tremendous pace, on a very hard and fast pitch. The ball hit the ground, and rose like demon. It bounced over Tony Greig's head, and was still rising when it soared over the head of the Australian wicket-keeper (Rodney Marsh) who was standing some thirty yards back. It flew through the air, and didn't hit the ground until it reached the boundary fence 100 yards (ie 300 feet) behind the batsman.
As you can imagine, the batsman, Tony Greig, turned white as a sheet! An account of Ian Chappell, the then Australian Captain, can be seen at one point in this video: ua-cam.com/video/g7dQ3UABXJk/v-deo.html
So, somebody came up with the bright idea of measuring Jeff Thomson bowling in an international competitive match. Since there were no hand held radar guns back in the day, they decided to use a very fast cameras, shooting at 6,000 frames per second.
Jeff Thomson was measured, at his fastest, bowling at 103+ mph that day.
There have been a lot of truly fearsome fast bowlers in the history of cricket, but since some of them bowled more than a hundred years ago now, the equipment to measure their speed did not exist when they were playing the game.
But there's only two who, it is reckoned, might have been faster than Jeff Thomson, both of them Englishmen: Frank 'Typhoon' Tyson of Northamptonshire and a Nottinghamshire coal miner's son by the name of Harold 'Wrecker' Larwood.
Of these two, Larwood is believed to have been the faster, but in the end, only God knows how fast either man actually bowled.

Yes, they can bat on the other side of the bat. But the bat has the stroke on the flat side. The other side don't have the stroke on it. So they don't do that.

If you turn the bat you can't control the direction the ball will go and there is a greater chance of getting out. Also with the flat side, you cab strike the ball harder. B

You, I think, are one of the very few who acknowledge the fact that a cricket ball very hard..no spongy stuff there and with it being bowled at a batsman standing 20 yards away from the bowler (pitcher) its dangerous..It has broken bones, cracked skulls and killed batsmen..That is why so much padding for the batsman..Previously, prior to 1972, there was no helmet and paddings were not so specialised..Also, there were not so many restrictions on the bowler....It is a gentlemans sport, yes but at the highest level one could be seriously injured if the technique is not right.
