Critical Care is itself a very broad speciality. Broader than even General medicine, if somebody wants to be a 'Master' of the field.
Patients of all types of critical illnesses get admitted and they require a very knowledgeable doctor to handle them.
Otherwise night duties ke liye Anaesthetists best hote hain. They can handle ICU emergencies, ICU procedures and general care of admitted patients very well.
Making complicated diagnosis and treatment requires deeper knowledge of general medicine, cardiology, pulmonology, radiology and surgery etc.

Then for next 2 hours Surgeon sits outside, Anaesthetist reverses the first patient, prepares OT for 2nd patient and induces anaesthesia in 2nd patient.
Anaesthetist arrive 1 hour earlier than the surgeon and leave 2 hours late, after shifting all patients.

Total number of Anesthesia seats are usually less than the total number of surgical seats (ObGy, Gen Sx, ENT, Ophthal, Ortho) along with Super Speciality Surgical seats like Neuro, Uro, Gastro, Onco, Pedia Sx branches like Psychiatry require GA for ECT and even sometimes for sedation in radiology Anesthesiologists are called. This is just Peri-Op, there's also ICU and Pain Management available as options.
