I took notes and would like to share it for those who need it: 👇🏻
- time word + 就 - Express an action happened earlier than expected
- 我昨天五点就起床了
- 你妈在你小的时候就离开了
- 我们早就有新房子了
- event1 / action1 + 就 + event2 / action2 - Express after action 1 finished, action 2 will happen immediately
- 剪完这段我就去 after I finish editing this part, I will go
- 就+ 要 - Express an action is going to happen in the near future
- 客人就要来了 The guests will arrive soon (they have almost arrived
- 我们很快就要有自己的新家子 We’re going to have our new house soon
- 就 + 要 - Expressing “just”
- 我就要吃这个 I just want to eat this
- Reason (,) (S) + 就 (then) + Next action / The result - Expressing an if-then condition
- 我喜欢就拿去 If you like it then you take it
if you're using it in the context of "just," can you use 只 instead?
@@chocomint8261 yes, both is fine.
Thank you!!
Did I ever told you Iove you ?
@@chocomint8261 There's a slight nuance in meaning. When you say 我就要吃这个 , the emphasis is on your insistence. When you say 我只要吃这个, the emphasis is on the food item you're pointing at and the unspoken ones you're excluding and/or not open to eating.
God I always knew 就 was going to be the bane of my existence when I first started learning Chinese. Hardest character ever.
Dhaarok It’s indeed a complicated word lol
就 is more manageable than 了 for me atleast😩
actually, as a Chinese, i also have no idea when i use "就", just use it with my feeling. i think it's time to use it, then i use it.
Ha, good to hear you say so. I do exactly this in Dutch.
... No Jiu, of course 😁
tbh I think everyone deals this way in their native language xD If you asked me for German grammar I couldn't help you, it just "feels right" this way...
@@rebeccan8290 Yes is it... atleast we Can make people understand
Of course, that's because you're a native speaker
That’s like any native speaker. You forget the ‘rules’ bc it’s a daily immersive thing, so if someone explains it or asks; you’re thinking ‘wut, I just…. Idk, I just use it?’ XD
as a Chinese native speaker, I have no idea when to use 就 haha I just use it whenever I feel like I wanna use😂😂😂
I even realised I can’t even explain how to use 就 lol 😂
I’ve watched a lot of your videos and it reminded me how Chinese grammar is quite hard to explain and made me realise I can’t even explain how to use those certain words which is quite interesting to know hahaha
我会中文 但从来没发现 就 这个字那么难解释该怎么用😂
Mandarin would be a lot easier for me if i knew how to use this character and if i understood sentences with the character in it! Thank you for the examples! You are an angel sent from heaven! 😭❤
You are the most better chinese teacher!
你的影片好好看,不知不覺就看了四集,謝謝你的分享,祝你的教學事業蒸蒸日上 🥰
Thank you, Grace! I was helping a Taiwanese friend with English a couple of days ago, explaining that when someone is being talked about and the same person unexpectedly appears, In the US we say “speak of the devil.” My Taiwanese friend said that in Mandarin, the equivalent would be “Shuo gui, gui Jiu lai” (說鬼鬼就來). I didn’t fully understand what he meant until now.
I love that you put examples of TV shows in your videos, so I can see a real use and not only example sentences!
I love the way you use real examples from Chinese media, and your explanations are so clear and concise
Thank you!
Possibly the hardest chinese word to use/master, thanks for the video
就 is hard for foreigners cuz there is no specific word for it in english. It is pretty easy for Thai people to understand cuz it has the same meaning as the word "ก็".
This video is so good!! I hope you'll make one on “才” too
David Ng Hello David! Thanks for the suggestion! :D
@@GraceMandarinChinese You should explain 就 and 才regarding the “late/slow/hard” vs. “early/fast/easy”. This is something that's unknown for beginners and could take a while to get into students their heads and become a habit.
I love your videos! They are really informative and well made and I finally understood 就!
It is so helpful!!! Thank you so much!

谢谢你老师!
Love your videos, so easy to follow and understand. 💜
谢谢 Grace! This was very helpful as all the other videos you make!
I just want to give an advise to the other fellow learners who follow you. Don't get bumped by these tricky characters. The secret is to get exposed to the language as much as possible (by listening to podcasts, watching videos, reading, etc.) and at some point you will just use characters like 就 and 了 naturally. Native speakers don't think about it, they just use them when it feels right. And this goes for any language you're learning.
Good luck!
U just yourselves a new subscriber
I like the way u explained the jiù becos I've been struggling myself with that I've always swapped it around and I got confused
你太棒了!!谢谢!这个字太难懂了😂

Oh my god, I paused before the video start and the 0:00 frame is so cute!
The sample you gave is : 我们就要有家了。when I studied chinese, my teacher said if what we mean referring to the house /building, then we use 房子。
Gracias thanks parabien
Very technical.. Much needed lessons.. Phew.. !! Grammar kills... Dan ,wo xihuan Zhongwen xuexi.. !!
就 is temporally heavy in context usually an acknowledgement of a natural resultant [expectation]. Hence, when in use an audience often needs to recall a previously mentioned condition [this however can be assumed].
我喜欢的 "就"是你的课程
I think u probably wanna say: 我就是喜欢你的课程。🤔
I am first year in college learning chinese as my main study field. It is indeed hard but i guess it'll be worth it. I love it. :))
Arama Laura Hello Laura!
Yes I think your way is okay! Especially you have pressure to pass the exam. And at your stage, you do need to accumulate enough characters, vocabulary and basic grammar to move on to next level. Just that pronunciation is quite important when you want to communicate in Chinese. Remember to figure out what the differences are among those sounds so that you can have a great progress in your listening and speaking.
Good luck with your learning! 加油💪
我看这视频,就学很多了
Im a beginner if I'm wrong please tell me why.
it's a little bit strange but i cant tell you why is it. i would remove 就 in this sentence and add到after學.學到which means have learned
For the structure "event1 / action1 + 就 + event2 / action2", I think it doesn't have the meaning of expressing a thing that happens sooner or earlier? Because it's just a conjunction between the two events.
Please add Zhuyin for us ㄌㄠˇㄨㄞˋ, 哈哈 謝謝你
Can anyone pls tell me the series from which the last 2 clips have been taken??
Thank you for the video! This video and the video on 才 were super helpful.
What is the movie or TV show that is used as an example at 1:55 ? I want to watch it ~
hey grace can you name the tv shows you added in this video?
晚上好老师,7:40那部电影叫什么?看起来很好看
新年快乐
Junhao Wang 新年快樂!(新年快乐!)
My Chinese textbook shows the sentence 弟弟很聪明,才五岁,不但能看英文书,甚至能看中文书。 I wonder why they use 才 here instead of 就。 Since he can read "sooner than expected", it seems like 就 fits better here. What am I missing?
So when things happen earlier we use 就. But how to expect thing to happens before it happens, so we know when to use it.
Anyone knows what movie does this scene come from? 4:37
the exampleis fun because it is a movie XD
I hear this in lots of sentences
Yes this is a common word in Mandarin. It appears a lot:)
How many versions of 就 are there? I think I’ve learned 9 but I defo don’t remember them all.
James Wong The answer to this question varies among people. It depends on how you analyze and categorize it. Even dictionaries have different definitions of this word. I don’t think you have to memorize how many versions there are. Just listen more and practice using it in different contexts. It will be okay! ;)
I completely agree with this. The way I go about it is learning the different meanings, but not necessarily memorising their exact use and definitions. Then by having a lot of input, you will come across 就 or whatever grammar you’ve learned and see how it’s used in context and slowly get used to it and it’ll become part of your active language.
The downside to this way of learning is it doesn’t test well, often the grammar is taught then a test is given for the chapter within 5 days which isn’t enough time for new grammar patterns to be internalised.
It’s a common phenomena that people can test well at a language but can barely speak it, I think the reverse holds true as well.
就是你 我的梦中情人
he turned the light off then walked to his bed 他关掉灯*就*走往他的床。
就 and 已经 are very interchangeable?? Or not?
Grace or another Mandarin speaker: hi, when you read the sentence slowly, are you still applying Sandhi rules--or are you reading the marked tones? Thanks!
sorry if this is too late but yep, she's reading it with the tone changes!
@@miafitzhugh756 Thanks, Mia!

This word has so many use cases I was very confused with it
You always look so beautiful 😍
你的视频很棒! 你是否会考虑为更高级的学习者制作不使用英语的视频?
相反,我是来练英语听力的哈哈哈
就 seems to be almost like "already" in English?
I think you forgot to put the card at 5:59
突然慶幸自己是中文母語者~
從外國人的角度來說真的很複雜ㄋㄟ
Combo Fist 真的超複雜XD 一個字要做兩集哈哈
就是嘛。。。 I am using 就here
I'm currently watching a drama and one of the main characters said "我就好开心". What does 就 mean in this case? tia!
Another meaning I’ve seen is that 就 is used for emphasis so that would probably be the application in that instance
