I was at this performance. Madame Caballe had not been singing at the Met for some months, and their was great anticipation as to whether she would show. When she walked on the stage, there was a sigh of relief and of course the audience went wild!
I was there, also. A glorious moment. Almost as glorious as when Kiri lost her way with Mozart and Levine recovered her. Wonderful memories. Thank God for them.
I was at the Met for this performance. Miss Caballe should give lessons on operatic acting. She is the mistress of restraint. The character comes from within, and from the music. She doesn't have to run around and do cartwheels as the singers of today do. They think they are acting: i.e. Anna Netreko. No, Monserrat was totally in character and conveyed the essence of her role just by raising an eyebrow, or turning her head slightly.
we are so fortunate to live in an era that enables us to sample such a huge variety of great music by a centuries worth of glorious voices. Caballe is certainly up there with the very greatest of sopranos and Jose is all style and beauty if not perhaps quite at her level. Just so enjoyable to hear them. three cheers for Utube.
This piece belongs to opera treasures! I love this opera and especially final a lot! I always burst in tears... It´s great to hear Joseph before his terrible desease when his voice was the highest quality! I´ve been in love with him all my life and I struggled when he was so ill... They both are so great! Thanks for posting it...
And still what you hear these days does not come close to the Caballe and Carreras days -- days of magic if you were lucky enough to see them live -- pure magic
I agree. and JC pushed his lovely lyric tenor into a place where high notes were very difficult for him, all to make a bigger sound. I loved his voice just the way it was. He need not scream for me.
Glorious duet from one of my favorite operas sung by two fabulous stars. I met Caballé backstage after a Verdi Requiem at Saratoga and she was amazingly modest and gracious, a diva in the very best sense of the word.
I was there, too! I watched as she autographed Leontyne Price's recording of the Verdi Requiem. She graciously asked the requestor if she wanted her to sign her name or Leontyne's. She was thoroughly lovely. And what a great performance it was!
This is thrilling. Everything that has been said about the chemistry of the two singers is true. And how nice to see the WHOLE video, including the audience reaction at the end. So many youtube opera vids end when the voices do - cutting out the musical finale and the ovation/reaction. In many ways the best bit about this video is the way the camera focuses on Levine at the end of the piece, from 7.50-8.17. It's just - as I say - thrilling!
wow! what a treat! Tell me something....did Jose Carreras'' voice carry well at the Met? Some people had commented that his voice didn't carry too well at the Met? I'm sure that's utter nonsense! I saw his Carmen from 1987 at the Met on dvd and it sounded like his voice carried well then
wow!!! that's great! I wish I had seen him at the Met in La Boheme and Tosca with Birigit Nilsson. I did get to see him once at Radio City in his Tribute to Mario Lanza concert in 1994. What a night and I was about 100 feet away from him but not close enough to get an autograph. :(
Philip Condenzio So was I. Fantastic event, my partner and I came over from London for it. The sad thing is that we can never see anything of this quality again.
Wonderful seeing Caballé Carreras together. Theres complicity between them. The voices match fantastically. Their chemistry is special. I think their duet was the best, Pavarotti sang magnificently but Leontyne price didnt interact with him in the Ballo in Maschera duet.
I'll never understand why Carreras pushed his voice to try to become something he wasn't at all, and in the process always sounded (esp later) like he was trying to hoist it out there beyond its capabilities. He is not naturally a big voiced. I always wished he had stuck to lighter fare.
Well I enjoyed it as did the audience. Some of the comments on here are so uninformed. Carreras had leukaemia once in the late 80's he did not have spinal cord transplant but a bone marrow transplant.
What marvelous singing from one pf the greatest sopranos of the last century and with Bernabe Marti, her tenor husband, a mentor to Jose Carreras. She was indeed a gracious prima diva. After one of her concerts, I said to her, "Mme. Caballe, you don't need me to tell you how beautifully you sang tonight"--to which she replied, "Oh, I do need for you to tell me so! I always leave the stage wondering if I have given my best." Her pride in Jose Carreras's singing is evident in the video of him singing "La dolcissima effigie" with her in "Adriana Lecouvreur." She could not help mouthing the lines as he sang the aria: ua-cam.com/video/OfdFo-tigiI/v-deo.htmlsi=meahVZYg80QSq1Lh
Hi Who the heck are all you Voice Trashers? It makes me sick to read all these judgemental, condescending jibes. These are great artists! Warriors of our Art. To put them in the muck of public disdain is beyond dishonorable. I also have heard them both live. Stunning voices. But, NO ONE can stay at a youthful peak forever. And this is live, Not a studio polished recording. They are wonderful artists. And as for the closet tenors throwing mud...I have done this duet many times. IT IS HARD!!! It takes everything in you to roar through it. All you Queens of the Night with your slings and arrows, leave Jose alone, and go take a voice lesson! You might become better informed!
@russpenney5775 in what key did you sing this many times? It truly IS a lot more difficult without the downward transposition they used here. To be fair, I don’t think Jose COULD have sung this in the higher key. Although Tucker often took this down, it was a choice. He sang it often in concert in the higher key and nailed the final (unwritten) B every time.
We must enjoy looking at the best years of Jose Carreras he gave us a lot, even knowing that it was not allways the best repertoire for his voice, but...Alfredo Kraus expert in treating his ow voice, recomended, to have a long carrier you should sing with the interest, keeping the capital. Carreras although admiring Kraus, did not share his opinion and said: I would rather sing whatever I like, than singing all my life Traviatas, Rigoletos, Lucias, don Pasquale and similar. What a pity that Carreras obstinate to imitate Pipo Di Stefano in his erroneous repertoire and voice technique, we should follow his marvelous early recordings
Watch how they interpret and become transformed by the music at the end. Their stances change, they can't help but act a bit according to the opera's plot (the characters are going to their deaths). Great music interpreted by great artists!
He is Catalan as I know and his first language is Catalan, too. So I am sorry I´d like respect his origin. That is why I use his originan name which is written on one on my CDs with Catalan songs....
There are some cuts in this duet, and I don't know if this was necessary. Jose has in this point already put strain on his voice.Diction here comes before cantilena line, perhaps because he strived toward a declamatory drammatic style. So, some dryness that was in the voice becomes more pronounced. And probably some subtle changes in his health before the full blown leukemia that came a few years later are already affecting his voice. Still, a very good performance.
@castorp278 he suffered a leukemia and had a spinal cord transplant, but that was after Karajan forced his voice to the limit like he did witl most of his singers like Agnes Baltsa or Katia Ricciarelli; but this man at least stills singing...

Beautiful. But the comment about Anna Netrebko running around is ludicrous, she can and stay in character, imagine Montserrat Caballe running around. Ha ha she would have knocked herself unconscious with that huge bosom of hers. But the voice is glorious nevertheless.
I adore Caballe and her voice, on this occasion however I have a serious reservation: her pronunciation seems somewhat sloppy, exactly as it did on the DECCA recording of ANDREA CHENIER with Pavarotti, under Chailly. Shame, as this is my favourite opera, but otherwise splendid 👍👍
He's much too light for "Chenier" and as expected both are distant sounding with unclear diction. However, the singers attempting these roles today are I'm sad to say much much worse. To truly appreciate this duet one needs to listen to Tebaldi along with Tucker or Del Monaco (Met '60 and New Orleans '53, respectively).
These two Spaniards obviously loved each other, and Carreras was so handsome here. But they can talk about Kathy Battle and Jessye Norman being difficult; in my personal experience, she was absolutely the most demanding diva I have witnessed on stage. She had total disdain for everybody including the orchestra and the conductor. The voice was magnificent, but I think Levine was secretly glad when she cancelled, which she did all the time.
While Carreras was woefully lacking in vocal amplitude and ring not to mention his struggles with the top notes he was at least pretty, Caballe was approaching her declining years while her waistline was in ascent! A lyric tenor--Gigli comes to mind--can handle Chenier even in a house the size of the old met but a Gigli is in a different league than a Carreras since HE KNEW HOW TO SING. When this fiasco was sung(?) Carreras was years from the illness he suffered in the late 90s.
How dare you be so insensitive montse had a cancerous pituitary gland which had operated only 15 % for years .It meant she ballooned in weight ,and it made her bad knee ,very painful. She had 7 major operations in 8 years .keep your uninformed nastiness to yourself 🤮

R.I.P. Montserrat Caballé.
One word - FAAAAAABULOUS !!
perhaps one of the very best duets ever written-here sung by 2 of its best interpreters.
What a huge voice Caballe had!
I was at the Met for this performance. Miss Caballe should give lessons on operatic acting. She is the mistress of restraint. The character comes from within, and from the music. She doesn't have to run around and do cartwheels as the singers of today do. They think they are acting: i.e. Anna Netreko. LOL! Caballe doing cartwheels on stage would have brought the house down - figuratively and literally
SENSATIONAL !
Happy birthday, Mr. Carreras! Thank you for all special moments you have given us!
we are so fortunate to live in an era that enables us to sample such a huge variety of great music by a centuries worth of glorious voices. Brilliant music and OMG, brilliantly sung! Her performances with Corelli were wonderful, too!
Sin palabras! Es lo mas bello que se pueda ver y oír !!!
Amazing, such affection between them. Beautifully sung. Thank you
i was there! A musical moment for the ages...
76 years and counting ... thank you maestro

Macho Voce Or anywhere unfortunately

Tienes toda la razón Macho Voice. Saludos cordiales.
I adore his smile ...
Why must some sad people complain? This is fabulous. Could the moaners do this? No!
It is because those who moan are top knotch tenors and sopranos? Mmmmmm?
There aren't words to describe this. What class!
DE PEEELOOOOOS DEPELOOOOS !!! MAGNIFICOP BRUTALMENTE EMOCIONAL PURO FUEGO EN LA ARENA

Fabulous!
incredible singing!!! magnificent voices!!!
Impresionante final
It certainly is...love this : )
a reminder of just how large Carreras' voice was before his near fatal illness...
Goosepimples....fabulous!

He had a really big voice live...but not a dramatic one...

I hate nicpickers! They scare off others from the greatness of music.

Great orchestra
Bravi great artists!!!

@leontyne2 You are spot on Caballe-wise. Glad there are such people still!

BRAVI GRANTE QUALITA
God, someone in the world actually agrees with me. Incredible voice, but the brain and musicality... oh dear....sometimes I feel so alone! :)
I do !! talent, looks and a lovely personality... Nope, you're not alone !!
BRAVO!! BRAVO!!
Exquisite.

Edgardo Di Lamermoor A1898
After 1980 Carreras to heavy roles for him
You're right. It is Josep. And the "O" in Catalan sounds "U". I've heard enough Catalan in my life and that's how it is.
@eurydike Yes, I was there and the performance was great!!!!

Aquí todavía estaba en buena forma vocal. Un timbre precioso.
you make some very good points but just for the record...Carreras' illness started in 1987 fours years after this performance took place at the Met.
Listen also to Alain Vanzo as Chenier , live record 1970, more lyric than Carreras
@castorp278 he suffered a leukemia and had a spinal cord transplant, but that was after Karajan forced his voice to the limit like he did witl most of his singers like Agnes Baltsa or Katia Ricciarelli; but this man at least stills singing...
I would also add Corelli to that distinguished company of tenors.
Indeed!
‘La nostra mor-ah-ah’. She drives me nuts with this constant omission of consonants.
Big Luciano strepitoso in Boheme..La
well, to each his own :)
1933haynes - I agree!
Hablo de Carreras. Caballe divina.
@shyZolomouc you are from olomouc? really :-)))?will you come to hamlet today:-) ?
@castorp278 no wrong choices.
He Had Lukemia TWICE!
@sjpflute yes, Josep
Grandi cantanti...qui però ci vuole voce volume....Del Monaco ...Corelli....Tebaldi ...
I am sorry for the mistake..... :-)

Beautiful. But the comment about Anna Netrebko running around is ludicrous, she can and stay in character, imagine Montserrat Caballe running around. Ha ha she would have knocked herself unconscious with that huge bosom of hers. But the voice is glorious nevertheless.
Carreras had *no* business singing this one, or any spinto roles. Still, I enjoy it.

bastiani47 I don't suppose many people noticed. I was there and just enjoyed the splendour of it all. Be thankful that Madame Caballe lived
@pproust Bastian probably takes a score to the opera and tuts over a supposed wrong note, just to try to look clever.
It is not sung in the original Key!! Oh come on.. you both were young enough.

Shirley Verret says she was a very nice and fun person to be around. Everybody’s got opinions.
What was your role where you could see her behavior?
While Carreras was woefully lacking in vocal amplitude and ring not to mention his struggles with the top notes he was at least pretty, Caballe was approaching her declining years while her waistline was in ascent! A lyric tenor--Gigli comes to mind--can handle Chenier even in a house the size of the old met but a Gigli is in a different league than a Carreras since HE KNEW HOW TO SING. When this fiasco was sung(?) Carreras was years from the illness he suffered in the late 90s.
Oh, c'mon, he was terrific in this. (And I don't always care for his singing.)
I know this is late but Carreras had cancer in 1987 if you are going to rude about a great performance please get your facts right
How dare you be so insensitive montse had a cancerous pituitary gland which had operated only 15 % for years .It meant she ballooned in weight ,and it made her bad knee ,very painful. She had 7 major operations in 8 years .keep your uninformed nastiness to yourself 🤮
Dont bring Personal Appearances into it when talking about Performance, thats most Rude. I thought Carreras and Caballe performed splendidly.
So stupid your comment ! Caballê was an straordinary voice and Carreras too ! Why are you so mad ?
"Andrea Chénier" is one of the most boring opera ever composed. 3 amazing minutes in the complete work : "La Mamma morta". All the rest : noise.
You obviously have had a lobotomy! You cannot be a true Opera lover, IMPOSSIBLE!
Only if you can handle not very tasteful bovine singing with a lisp.
ah, my favourites, they are the best...
