Big A you have to post this on the main channel. This is genuinely one of your best videos, more people gotta see it, who cares if it is a couple months out of date every vid you make is out of date after a month, but the story of the UAW is timeless.
DUDE NO WAY. I’m from around flint michigan and my family was a huge part of the strike around the world. A lot of the strike was planned in my great great grandpa’s garage and my great grandpa was a cartoonist for the UAW. In fact when they got gassed my great great grandpa yelled for the woman’s brigade who were ouside of the GM plant to break the windows. idk it’s so cool to see something that my ancestors where huge part of be talked abt someone i’ve watched for so long
thats actually super dope. it's so cool and interesting to have family members that actively change the world, like my grandpa helped build the st. louis arch which is a massive historical monument in st. louis missouri, and i think that kind of stuff is really cool
I know this isn't a main channel, but I'm so happy to see the Unions doing well. I'm a school teacher, and across the entire country, we need reform....glad to see others making progress!
idk, i feel like a lot of the youtube frogs got recommended some of big A clips by the algorithm a while back, that's how i got into this channel at least
One of my great friends died at a UAW plant in Illinois due to terrible conditions. He fell into an install pit and had a seizure. It took 26 minutes for anyone to show up to give medical treatment but at that point he had passed away. UAW cut funding to safety in most plants to increase profits for CEOs. Glad to see that UAW has a president that fights for union members and not the companies.
For the sake of completeness, Atrioc misspoke. 13 people were shot by the police during the 1936 strike, but none of them died. Describing it as "nonviolent" is also pushing the limits of the truth - the strikers were plenty violent, they just didn't start it. When the cops attacked the factory, the workers fought them out with bricks and pipes.
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:22 🚗 *The 1936 United Auto Workers' sit-in strike in Flint, Michigan transformed America by demanding union recognition, using a unique sit-in approach that disrupted the usual violent patterns of strikes.* 02:01 🏭 *The sit-in strike's success came from occupying the factory seats, hindering scabs, and making the business leaders hesitant to use violence due to property concerns.* 03:52 🤔 *Embarrassing revelations about a judge's stock ownership in GM forced the government to step back, leading to President FDR refusing to send in the National Guard, ultimately forcing GM to recognize and negotiate with the union.* 05:15 📈 *The success of the UAW's strike against GM set the stage for victories against Chrysler and Ford, establishing a baseline for working class relations and fostering significant growth in the American middle class over the next 30 years.* 06:38 💪 *In 2023, the United Auto Workers are on strike again against Ford, GM, and Stellantis, with an unprecedented 75% of Americans supporting the striking UAW members.* 07:36 📋 *The UAW's demands include a 30-40% pay increase, the end of the two-prong pay system, a shorter workweek, cost of living raises, retirement benefits, and representation at EV battery plants.* 11:04 🔄 *The UAW innovatively employs a "stand-up strike" strategy, keeping workers employed while randomly striking at any of the three companies' factories, creating unpredictability and playing companies against each other.* 14:18 ⏳ *After 26 days of bargaining, the UAW escalated the strike with a massive walkout, hitting key plants, and effectively costing GM millions, leading to significant concessions and progress in negotiations.* 15:43 💼 *The UAW successfully negotiated historic agreements with Ford, Stellantis, and eventually GM, achieving most of their demands within 40 days, showcasing the effectiveness of their strategic stand-up strike.* 17:37 📆 *The UAW negotiated a 5-year deal with an expiration date of 2028, aligning with International Workers Day, strategically planning for future strikes if needed.* 18:17 🌍 *The UAW strike is part of a broader trend with healthcare workers, actors, hotel workers, and teachers also on strike, potentially marking the beginning of a new era with increased union membership and fair income distribution.* Made with HARPA AI
Amazing video, I enjoyed it throughly. I really enjoyed the historical comparison and also the part of holding a date in the future. I just wonder about if there would be any implications for worker movements in the world which would be in the spirit of international workers day.
I'd argue the first major one (Rail workers? I think?) Or the Newsboys are more important for popularizing the idea and basically inventing child labor acts respectively. Definitely still a great one.
Well I mean if the writers just don't write for a day the cost for the company would not be nearly as high as the car companies because of different cost distributions , same with the actors, so this strat probably wouldn't work as well
i know right it’ve been amazing!!! also Scandinavia is not civilized, those countries destroy others for the ephemeral prosperity of most of their citizens.
This coverage is missing a pretty important part, a lot of workers under the union weren't actually happy with it. Especially in the plants in the Midwest they wanted to fight for more and very heavily unanimously voted no in most plants, they were even the ones you hear about in the story as doing the most for the strikes. However since union contracts are a thing that's all or nothing the plants around the country voting yes outweighed the plants in a few Midwestern states by like 3% resulting in the contract passing and them not being able to strike again until the contract is up. So keep in mind just because a guy on the screen says it's a big win, doesn't mean it actually is, a lot of them are unhappy because they could have gotten more and all that they did get were the bare minimum things that didn't immediately get rejected and what followed the contract was thousands of layoffs especially in those Midwestern plants that wanted better.
I kept seeing claims like this is comments and socialist news outlets, but I spent like 3 hours searching around in late November for details and barely anything came up. At least include a link or reference or something. It's getting aggravating seeing people say this with little to no evidence. This might be true but I have no reason to think it's true!
@user-zj7vj6xj8o how does my comment contradict itself or what the video states? The points about people being very happy with the contract are literally the names of the people who run the union and make hundreds of thousands of dollars to make these deals and everything else is in line, just because it's historic doesn't mean it's good, it just means that a 20% raise now is more literal money than it was in the fucking 1940s
Chad. Capitalism working as it should. Negotiations for a *mutually beneficial* outcome are a fundamentally Capitalist thing, and previous government interference in such things is what led to such issues. Reagan, for all the good he did with a number of his policies, was a massive loser in terms of a number of things, labor and labor unions being one of them.
In hindsight these strikes have caused an enormous amount of job loses for the union. With the downturn in EVs the companies cant afford all these expensive workers.
Surprised this didn’t go on the main channel, this had me invested to the very end, bonus points for actually having a good outcome

Probably one of the best marketing Monday videos hands down. Super informative, even if its not "current" enough for the main channel.
Fun video! A bit sad the regular youtube frogs probably won't see it but this was very entertaining and informative :)

Unions are so incredibly based
32 hour work week? That's ~5 hours less than a full work week in civilized countries like the ones in Scandinavia. The actual f*ck?
They’re lazy bastards
with how productive workers are compared to the past, we could work 20 hour weeks today and be on par with those of the past.

That's how productive we have become. In theory, Just in a decade or so, we could cut down the working hours to less than 20
