  • How to focus bracket.
    I use the Canon R6 Mark II focus bracketing feature to photograph some Funk Pop Vinyl figures. I show you how to use the focus bracket feature and what settings I prefer. The Focus Bracket feature will create a focus-stacked "depth composite" for you in-camera and output a jpg of the stacked image. I used the RF 24-104 f/4 L IS USM lens for these shots. Thanks Phil, another well explained video. I especially liked the bit where you added the extra 15 shots to bring the back of your Sony camera into focus - that part really showed how the adjustment changed things.

    Thanks for the demonstration. It is helpful. I am puzzling if I can achieve the same result by using a large f number aperture.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  9 днів тому

      I don't think you can get the same result by using a smaller aperture. You can get close but not perfect like this. Also, with extremely small apertures (large numbers) you will also have to content with diffraction adversely affecting the sharpness of your image.

    great demo
    Can you advise how one might estimate the number of images require to shoot from the closest to farthest focal point to get a stack throughout those points?
    For example, if I was shooting a scene of a lighthouse and a foreground 30m apart, how many images would be required at a given f/ ?

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  6 днів тому

      Thank you! You have to use trial and error. For a scene like that you can put in a large number of shots. The camera will stop shooting when it gets to infinity. You can use a larger step value for a scene like that.

  • @a_commonman

    Wow that's an awesome video ❤.. I always wondered how it works. Now I got it. By looking at your a6700, I am thinking of shifting to a6700 due to scarcity of good lightweight dedicated lens for my R7. What is ur opinion ? Is it a better idea ?

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you! I love my a6700 and a lot of the reason for that is lenses. I often use the Sigma 18-50 2.8 zoom with it. You just can't get something like that for the Canon R APSC cameras.

    Hi Phil, I am your fan and watching every video you produced. One question though, do you know whether Canon Focus Bracketing work with flash light or not? I have seen Micael Widell used flash light to work with his OM-1 camera in macro shots. it works very well. Love to use flash light in Focus Bracketing with Canon's. Thanks!

    Have you ever done this free hand or will that ruin the final image? Without flash, I have taken team shots in a gym with two or three rows of players and I normally dont have a tripod with me, players might be moving some, blinking, but wondered if focus stacking would help get all there rows in focus? I can try it I guess. Experiment. Thx

    • @angelogarciajr5356

      I just tried it with a cat sleeping on the roof out back free hand but steady. I did ten shots and assuming the 11th shot is the final. That worked pretty good. Normally the back of the cat would not be sharp with the 100-500.I need to use this more often. Thank you.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  4 місяці тому

      There’s a link to a macro video at the end of this video where I did it freehand on macro subjects. It is tough, but can work. I have not tried it freehand on large subjects like a cat or a group of students in some bleachers.

    Hi Phil, I have a problem by using Focus Bracketing on my R7. I set up for 45 pictures but it only took 5 and stopped. I tried every setting as I know and could not solve the problem. Do you have any suggestions and recommendations? Thank you very much!

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  4 місяці тому

      The camera will stop at the number of shots you set up or infinity, whichever comes first. So it must have reached infinity focus.

    • @PhilThach

      Increase the number of shoots until it gets to infinity. If you put in a high number of shots, it will get there.

    Don't you need a macro lens to make it work correctly?

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  Місяць тому

      No, as seen in this video, I didn't use a macro lens for my example. You can use a macro lens for macro subjects, my subject was large enough that a macro lens was not required to fill the frame. Subjects do not have to be tiny to benefit from focus bracketing and depth compositing. You can even use this technique for huge landscapes.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  2 місяці тому +1

      I don’t have my camera with me at this very moment, but I think it is very close to focus bracketing in the menus. Also, I don’t believe the camera will make an HDR stack in camera. You have to do it with third-party software.
