Wilt Chamberlain shot his free throws the same way during the year he averaged 50 points per game. He finished that season with his highest career free throw percentage of any season, but he still went back to shooting free throws the traditional way because he said the underhanded way made him feel like a wimp and unmanly.

I was watching a game on tv years ago and Barry was fouled and for some reason a brawl erupted. Barry shot his 2 free throws plus 5 technicals and made all 7. It was my first time seeing him on tv.

I wish Shaq would have just shot like this. Shaq did an interview and basically said he didn’t do that because it’s embarrassing and makes him look like a chump. I don’t know, I find it far, far more embarrassing that the most unstoppable player in basketball history has to be pulled from the 4th quarter of a close playoff game because of fucking hack-a-Shaq. That is way more embarrassing than hitting 80% of your free throws by going underhand. Now all of a sudden Shaq is now more unstoppable than Lebron or Jordan

    • @klas666

Right?! As if if anybody in NBA would realistically call that monster a chump. If he switched FT technique with the new season, by NY boys in the whole country would be trying it out

i hope so because its viable... theres defininte potential advantages. closer release to the rim... lower release point with a higher arc angle... much more potential for backspin... symmetrical body motion. a lot of great things about it, and one of the best FT shooters of all time used this style. we may not see it see it... people are afraid to be different. but i hope someone sees this and is inspired to try

If people weren't so damn proud and self conscious of how this looks, they (especially the worse shooters, and even more than that the big centers) would have much higher percentages. In addition to this, if you score 90% of these, no one is going to foul you anymore, which is an extra bonus to your stats.

See how low the over hander bends down to shoot. The trajectory isnt as steep overhanded so you make up for it by bending back and bending their knees. It's like those carnival games.

I feel like a lot of big guys would benefit from shooting the underhanded free throw just like wilt chamberlain did back in the day. Shooting overhand(traditional) free throws as a big man like shaq for example can be really difficult because their hands are so large and they are too strong to soften up the shot enough.

    • @thedarksage328

There is actually some science behind what you said.
The underhanded technique has been proven by physicists to be superior to the conventional shooting motion. It's described as more repeatable and easier to build muscle memory for.
