@@PaxDisturbia There is wonderful harmony in this setting. Singing it slower allows the harmonies to flourish. This setting is one of the reasons this hymn is as moving as it is. (There are other settings.) This is coming from a church organist. I know that, if I go too fast, people can't/won't sing the harmonies on any hymn. People need a chance to breathe and take the words in. (And I'm accused of taking hymns too fast frequently, anyway.) The original had 15 verses. Modern US hymnals cut that usually to 5. While, in a church service, I would not want to cut any of the 5, if you only sing those 5, you are cutting 10 verses. In a secular performance, getting an audience to since 3 verses acapella in a way that moves emotions is absolutely amazing. I saw no one showing off, unless you consider singing harmony to be showing off.
If you're listening to this great piece, wondering if there is a Jesus- He is real. He is complete, tender love and He wants to know you. Look for Him and you'll easily find Him.
Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended That we to judge thee have in hate pretended? By foes derided, by thine own rejected O most afflicted For me, kind Jesus, was thine incarnation Thy mortal sorrow, and thy life's oblation Thy death of anguish and thy bitter passion For my salvation

As we can't sing in church at the moment (Covid restrictions) I was able to join in with this. 'I do adore Thee, and will ever pray Thee.' Thank you, Sweet Jesus!
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. This is to all denominations: If Mark 15:6-15, 25-26, 33-39 is your Scripture(s) of the Day, this is a good hymn to compliment it. This hymn is usually sung during the Season of Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday to Good Friday.
I was conducting my first Messiah on Saturday night in NJ ... but if I could have been ANYwhere else I would have been there. Congrats on a truly stellar show. ❤️🎵
Such a beautiful hymn - melody by Johann Cruger (1598 - 1662), used also by J.S. Bach in the St. Matthew Passion (Herzliebster Jesu, was hast du verbrochen )
@@trey5667 That’s completely true unfortunately. Some “Christians” are just horrible... ya gotta find a church that’s supportive and non judgemental. Not all are bad. Glad that you still have faith in God :)
@@robertdenzeliii8799 I, dear sir am not judging anyone. I happen to love Sufjan's music whether it be "Christian" or otherwise. Whether he be straight or homosexual. I was taught to hate myself by the church. I am no longer affiliated with ANY "Religion". They all breed hate/human tribalism. This is not what Jesus would have taught. So God if he is out there (I hope) will be just fine with me. Be well Robert.
It’s in all the Presbyterian hymnals and we sing it every year during Holy Week. One of my favorites (though we usually sing it at a slightly faster tempo)!
It's depressing because He (sinless), took upon himself the penalty of our sins, even while we were his enemies. We love Him because He first loved us!
The group shot at 5:00 - I am really going to miss Sue Scott, Tim Russell, Fred Newman, Richard Dworsky, and all the remaining original _APHC_ cast :( Also, here’s another rendition of the song with Johannn Crüger’s beautiful harmonization: ua-cam.com/video/XspqgdLjAVw/v-deo.html Makes me feel almost nostalgic for the church I used to attend as a kid
Only Sufjan Stevens can make an entire room of hip, urban New Jerseyans stand up to sing an old Lent hymn.
thats why im christian its great to see people who might not usually do this or be outright antigod unite under something so polarising
Its really nice
@@adonaiyah2196so true it unexpectedly got a tear from me :”)
No verses should ever be left out. Sing it faster, and sing it all. Stop showing off.

We've still got it! #289 in the United Methodist Hymnal
And #93 in the Presbyterian Hymnal
Written by a Lutheran and is still in the Lutheran Hymnal, Evangelical Lutheran Worship # 349.
I had to come here because I just mt some greater friends than ever

Oriental catholic and i am really impressed. Glory to our Lord Jesus
I am an Episcopalian and we sing this every year. I have always loved it.
Oh my so beautiful. Behold the man upon the cross so poignantly silently giving the lesson forgiveness.
I was there, singing along! Dreams do come true... :)
What was it like
We don't associate Live from Here with holy moments that elicit tears, but THAT was certainly one. Thank you.
As we can't sing in church at the moment (Covid restrictions) I was able to join in with this. 'I do adore Thee, and will ever pray Thee.' Thank you, Sweet Jesus!
Possibly the best rendition I have ever heard.
Beautiful rendition of such a wonderful hymn. It is also in the Lutheran Service Book and we sing it during lent almost yearly

Not depressing, but rather life giving! If you believe the gospel, that is. Verses 3 and 4 are key. God intercedeth..... for my salvation

Lost faith in Church many years ago. I love this still.
Have you lost faith in God? Or just in the church?

Good Friday hymn sung in many Anglican/Episcopalian churches.
This is sort of a a simplified version of "HERZLIEBSTER JESU" chorale from J. S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion, BWV 244 :)

Whose harmonisation is this?
The same harmonization is used in the 1940 Episcopal hymnal; no attribution for harmonization is given, implying that it is Cruger's own.
