  • ABOUT THE SCORE: Just prior to finding fame for herself as the femme fatale of a certain Paul Verhoeven thriller, Sharon Stone stared in this bizarre, admittedly occasionally clever, 1991 psycho-thriller in the vein of Hitchcock or DePalma. The varied and highly entertaining score comes from Croatian composer Alfi Kabiljo, best known in the West for his brilliant work on underserving duds like “Sky Bandits” and “Gymkata”. His score for “Scissors”, recorded with the Zagreb Philharmonic, is as strange and disparate as the film it accompanies - featuring a rhapsodic love theme for piano and orchestra (bookkeeping this suite), dissonant avant-garde utterances of symphonic fury (4:45), 80’s synthesizer-led music box-type themes that wouldn’t sound out of place in a “Child’s Play”-style horror film (6:54), and even a loosely-disguised adaptation of Delibes’ famous “Flower Duet” from his opera “Lakme” (1:23 on piano, then 7:49 with wordless soprano voices backing strings). Kabiljo’s ‘everything and the kitchen sink’ approach to the score is varied and wild, highly entertaining and unquestionably much deserving of a wider audience.
ABOUT THIS RECORDING: This suite is derived from the complete score originally available on the composer’s website. As the tapes appear to be a raw transfer, the sound quality is sufficient but there are occasional audio glitches that have been retained. If a proper release is to ever come about, hopefully the tapes can be cleaned up and remastered a bit.

“Just prior to finding fame for herself as the femme fatale of a certain Paul Verhoeven thriller, Sharon Stone...” Do you mean Basic Instinct? It’s directed by Oliver Stone. By the way, have you listened to Adrian Jonhston scores? I think that a suite from Shackleton, The Lost Prince, Lassie or Lawless Heart would fit perfectly in the spirit of your fine selection. Let me know if you need help to find these scores.
