Fiddling with settings is a great way to get to know your camera and what works for you. I found out that my camera can show me the photo in monochrome and the colour information on a graph. I don't know why this really works for me, but it helps me see exactly what I've taken a picture of and what might need changing much easier than looking at the normal colour image on the little display.
Hi Thomas, That's interesting. A lot of the older pro level broadcast cameras have black and white monitors and on the few sets I have visited, the camera operators swear by this technique. They say the colour is distracting, so having it in black and white helps see the contrast and composition in the frame. Great to hear that technique works for you. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Doing run and gun corporate media helped me be quick w settings and nailing most of the shots on manual for both photo and video. Great video. Reminds me of our morning milky way runs in the desert minus the big camel spiders haha. Thanks and keep up the great work

I was there this summer... Great cycling nearby. Great video... We can all use the advice. Some jackets like yours have reflective logos or tags... I've found they interfere with the eye sensor in Sony cameras and shut down the rear screen

This is by far the best video of yours that I've watched to date! Great video/drone work giving one a sense of location and size. Photography tips, local history and a ton of information matched with your infectious enthusiasm for what you do. I do love images that have a light cast in them and you've managed to bag several keepers, there. I'm mostly on manual mode when out and about and love the Fuji for having the three settings you mentioned on external dedicated switches (aperture ring on almost all of my lens). This mini UK series has been a good watch. Looking forward to seeing much more of the same...

Great video, Mike. It looks like that was a fantastic day of photography. You got some really nice shots. I love the simplicity of how you talk about adjusting the different settings, on the fly to give you the exposure that looks good on the camera. I sometimes get bogged down with what I should have instead of getting the shot. I guess we have all been there. I loved the overhead drone shot of the ruins with you walking around composing your shot at the beginning of the video, then cutting to the processed image that you shot. That was slick. I hope you and yours are well my friend. Looking forward to more.

Thanks very much!! I grew up in Wales and my parents taught us all about the risks of being in places like this. The caves are fine as long as you don't go inside them, without a guide...although they do get a bit spooky when you go near them and hear noises from within!! 😆 The places to look out for are on the tops of the mountains where they have the vertical mine shafts. Most are fenced off but every now and then you might find one that is open ... All good fun though if you are careful and find out about the area from the locals. 😀 Thanks for watching 👍

Great video(s). There was enough information in there for a few I'd say. Locations such as this are great for playing around with settings as you explain. I also use the super high ISO settings for getting my composition right in dark conditions. Once I'm framed up I'll reduce to something that will give decent quality images. Modern sensors are pretty amazing for "seeing in the dark". Thanks for posting Mike.

It was such a windy day, my filming camera nearly blew over a few times!! With the drone footage, don't tell anyone but it was way too windy to film on the same day I was doing the to camera pieces, so I came back once the storm had passed to get the aerial shots ... if you look at some of the aerial footage, the cloud base was way lower and so I couldn't fly the drone any higher than I did and I had to keep it angled down to make this less obvious ... Super venue and practical advice, Mike. (I’m still drying off.) Don’t recall seeing this place in any other YT posts. Hope your tetanus shots are up to date.😁 Buildings remind of urban renewal. Expected hobbit to emerge from that tree tunnel. Playing w/exp factors should work in any setting. Would not advise holding camera out at arms length, nor take hand-held panos. My guess is that pano you displayed was composite of images taken on tripod - yes? Was that a multi-exp of you at about 15:27 min? Your thumbnails/titles show true mastery of hyperbole - nice.😁 Cheers!
Thanks Paul! I don't think many people have been here ... it might be too industrial for some purist landscapers ... I on the other hand love it and think it is fascinating ... just in case you didn't catch that from the video! 😆 This is an exercise for people who might still be shooting in auto mode or on of the semi automatic modes or for when beginners are not quite sure about their principle settings ... I probably should have written an intro to this exercise to be a bit more concise... but I'll probably cover this in more detail later in the year. You'd be surprised at what the computers are capable of these days ... if the landscape is not too close to you, doing handheld panos like this are just fine ... The stitching algorithm is a lot less sensitive than it used to be. The first pano is the actual one I took whilst filming and the second one was taken in the same manner but I just bracketed the shots because of the sun shining in the left of the frame ... and it would have taken too long to show in the video. Gone are the days where a nodal pan head is needed ... I am also going to do a video on handheld panos later in the year as well ... At 15:27, that was a group from Go Below. They hiked up the incline a little and then went into the mine system ... through one of the levels further down the mountain. Thanks very much!! Getting a clickable thumbnail is an art in itself ... I try to do the faces and expressions sometimes but I hate doing that ... so I just do a screen grab and then work out what text might be enticing enough for you to click. It is one of my least favourite parts to youtube but it is a necessary evil...although it is developing my photoshop skills though!! 😆😆 As always thanks for watching 😁👍

Thanks so much! Yes, I got the lens a while back but only just started using it now. It's perfect for landscapes and if you use a tripod, there's no real issue with it. Wide open the image quality is slightly worse than with GM lenses, but for a fraction of the price, it's hardly noticeable. I've printed a few images from it and they look amazing. 😁👍

@@mikesphotography In the hills/ mountains we've built huts with a few sheets of iron and a bit of timber, till all this red tape. Now we have palaces, well up market huts. Probably the only country on the planet that uses huts. They would cost about $10 to $30 NZ dollars per night some people don't pay as it is honesty box Cheers

Nice tips for when we are traveling in mountain countries 💪 but us flat countries would love tips on flat landscaping 😅 Denmark æs highest point is 175.5 m over the ocean. And that's just a long hill, not a mountain height. But in Faroe Islands these tips are useful 😊
Shooting in manual mode is a great way to learn about the camera settings and how the principle settings interact with each other no matter where you are ... We actually live in Bangkok at the moment, but I have started spending my money on travelling instead of buying new kit ... a much better way to enjoy photography than be stuck at home with shiney, unused kit. With so many caves this must be a good place to stay in case of nuclear war. Iodine, water cans and box food is all sold out now. Good we have photography to stay sane :-)

I don't think many people have been here ... it might be too industrial for some purist landscapers ... I on the other hand love it and think it is fascinating ... just in case you didn't catch that from the video! 😆
This is an exercise for people who might still be shooting in auto mode or on of the semi automatic modes or for when beginners are not quite sure about their principle settings ... I probably should have written an intro to this exercise to be a bit more concise... but I'll probably cover this in more detail later in the year.
You'd be surprised at what the computers are capable of these days ... if the landscape is not too close to you, doing handheld panos like this are just fine ... The stitching algorithm is a lot less sensitive than it used to be. The first pano is the actual one I took whilst filming and the second one was taken in the same manner but I just bracketed the shots because of the sun shining in the left of the frame ... and it would have taken too long to show in the video.
Gone are the days where a nodal pan head is needed ... I am also going to do a video on handheld panos later in the year as well ...
At 15:27, that was a group from Go Below. They hiked up the incline a little and then went into the mine system ... through one of the levels further down the mountain.

I try to do the faces and expressions sometimes but I hate doing that ... so I just do a screen grab and then work out what text might be enticing enough for you to click. It is one of my least favourite parts to youtube but it is a necessary evil...although it is developing my photoshop skills though!! 😆😆

Thanks so much! Yes, I got the lens a while back but only just started using it now. It's perfect for landscapes and if you use a tripod, there's no real issue with it.
Wide open the image quality is slightly worse than with GM lenses, but for a fraction of the price, it's hardly noticeable.
I've printed a few images from it and they look amazing. 😁👍

@@mikesphotography In the hills/ mountains we've built huts with a few sheets of iron and a bit of timber, till all this red tape. Now we have palaces, well up market huts. Probably the only country on the planet that uses huts. They would cost about $10 to $30 NZ dollars per night some people don't pay as it is honesty box

They are ok, and keep your hands warm but feel a bit cheap...because they pretty much are. 😆 I'm going to get a few different pairs of photography gloves and test them out, probably later in the year in autumn 2022.

Entrance is called an adit. Level is correct for various levels. Tunnel is called a drift, digging above a drift is a raise.

Nice tips for when we are traveling in mountain countries 💪 but us flat countries would love tips on flat landscaping 😅 Denmark æs highest point is 175.5 m over the ocean. And that's just a long hill, not a mountain height.
But in Faroe Islands these tips are useful 😊
Shooting in manual mode is a great way to learn about the camera settings and how the principle settings interact with each other no matter where you are ...
We actually live in Bangkok at the moment, but I have started spending my money on travelling instead of buying new kit ... a much better way to enjoy photography than be stuck at home with shiney, unused kit.

What an incredible place. Here in North America , they’d be all sorts of fencing and notices to stay away, danger, fines and prosecution etc.

In North Wales, there are a few locations like this and they are fantastic to explore and photograph...and I learned whilst editing this video that this is one of the most extensive mine systems in the world...

@@mikesphotography Some off limits, many easily accessible. Many areas however are being leased and drilled with the continue high price of precious metals.
Interesting. I bet if the prices keep increasing, mining could start up again in certain places in the UK as well.
With so many caves this must be a good place to stay in case of nuclear war. Iodine, water cans and box food is all sold out now. Good we have photography to stay sane :-)
Unfortunately the mine systems are very wet and cold, and well vented with all of the inlets and shafts.
Let's hope it doesn't get to that ... 🙏
