- When the salmon are running up the Columbia River, Native people are there with them. They live, eat and sleep at the river. Their children grow up at the river. They catch salmon for subsistence, for ceremonies and for their living.
This is the life of the Wy-Kan-Ush-Pum, the Salmon People. It is a life Columbia River tribal people have lived for generations and have fought for decades to protect. Over the last century and a half, they have watched as forces eroded their access to salmon. Treaties removed them from their traditional fishing areas; dams massively reduced the numbers of salmon that swam in the waters; environmental contamination further poisoned the well.
And now, as climate change threatens the salmon throughout its life, the stakes of that fight are existential.

Our people here in tulalip have a salmon ceremony every year before the salmon come back to our waters honor the first caught fish in our waters in our ways of beliefs.. that's what brings our fish back every year. Honor what you catch what you hunt for what you gather in anyway and you will always receive what's being given..

I live on the lower Columbia River where it meets the ocean,why is it that our state has shut down most of our hatcherys???hatchery???? The first and most historic is the Chinook fish hatchery housed in Chinook Washington has been closed now for at least 6 years ,it just sits there with a care taker not in use, the second one you come to is in the town of grays river Washington its in the same condition no fish being spawned or hatched any longer, why why why????? Nobody around here can even answer any questions about this, ,,,Sad,, ,,

Damn, Western "civilization" has a lot to learn from native peoples, just so wrong what has been done to these ancient peoples.
These beautiful salmon and there native people who have lived side by side together for millioniums must be defended against progress and the business moguls who wants to profit from them any more,One love, One heart, One blood, One God, One race HUMANITY
I really do think the oceans are warming and fish are moving to cooler water same with the red king crab in the bearing sea. It might have something to do with it.

Thank you for the education. Clearly, we have not treated our first nations fairly. I hope President Biden goes beyond words and actually do something to restore a way of life that is is so Salmon dependent.

These dams keep millions of people alive with electricity. They keep hundreds of thousands of people protected from massive floods. Do a little more research into something before choosing a life goal.
First they say they only caught one fish, later they are cleaning 100s of fish?

Something that angers me about the Columbia fishermen is the fact they call it subsistence fishing but then you see them selling the fish in town. In this day and age there’s no way to convince me that someone can’t find a job earning money. We have a disaster unfolding with salmon numbers. There are hardly any fish returning to my home river any longer. Smelt and herring numbers are low. There have been whales washing up dead from starvation and here we are still raping Mother Earth when we don’t need to. We can’t look to the white men to make the right choices where money is involved. The First People are going to have to take the lead and force a stop to all fishing. As a child I remember being on a dock close to the ocean and looking down the pilings to see the thousands of small fish. More than could be counted. You can’t see one fish there today, they are all gone. The tidal influenced estuaries are almost a desert. If the oceans and rivers die, we will die not long after.

I’d advocate some common sense solution. Maybe better engineering into fish latters, seal management etc. Removing Damns may be detrimental and not an added benefit
Sorry folks I'm Native American and I left the reservation to go to work in the real world raise the family bought a house couple houses and did very well that's because I got off the reservation I didn't depend on the reservation in an American Native way wake up I've seen how you fish what a waste
