I have a 5 year old and cannot imagine my precious baby going through what your poor niece did. My heart hurts so much listening to this story and knowing the terror and trauma your niece experienced in her short life along with her poor dogs. You could have done more to protect her by stepping up and sending her away to be with her mother who obviously loved her a lot and did not want to leave her behind. I feel that despite what you said, your love was not strong enough to propel you to stand up to your wife and defend your niece. You failed her and your brother majorly and should be ashamed of yourself.
Your wife’s karma is not over yet. What happened to your daughter was just a small lesson. Your wife will get hers before she leaves this world and again in the afterlife and future rebirths. Don’t think that sending a few dollars to your niece’s mom will absolve your wife of her sins and the crime she committed.

Sad story. Back then, things were different and Hmong people think differently and every orphan back then would tell you the horrors they went through as orphans. Both my parents were orphans and they went through similar treatment from their supposed caretaker. So, I guess I can’t blame the guy in the story because I think he did what he could at the time being. Of course, in today’s world we could say he is guilty of second hand abuse of his niece, but back then that’s just what 99% of them did. Hmong people back then mistreated orphans and handicapped people. It was what was done back then 99-% of the time.
