- A new take on 'Shchedryk' (Carol of the Bells) by 'The Ukrainians' fusing traditional Slavic sounds with western rock, whilst exploring the song's pagan origins.
"Shchedryk is based on pre-Christian folk chants and a traditional folk tale. The lyrics tell the story of a swallow that flies into a home to announce the arrival of a bountiful and prosperous new year."

"The song is based on a traditional folk chant whose language was thought to have magical properties. The original traditional Ukrainian text used a device known as hemiola in the rhythm (alternating the accents within each measure from 3/4 to 6/8 and back again). The chant based on an ostinato four-note pattern within the range of a minor third is thought to be of prehistoric origins and was associated with the coming New Year which in Ukraine before the introduction of Christianity was originally celebrated in April." The version arranged for choir that became the melody for Carol of the Bells was arranged by Mykola Leontovych in 1916 who also wrote the first church litany in vernacular Ukranian. He was shot and his family robbed by a Soviet agent in 1921 as part of Soviet suppression of Ukranian culture and identity; 9 months before it was sung at Carnegie Hall to much acclaim, then after radio play had an English version of the lyrics added. Mykola Leontovych was declared a martyr by the Orthodox Church, the same one now backing Putin.
honor the past , live the present , dream about the future.
Bozhe Moi, this is one of the most beloved Carols. But not to many know that this is a Ukrainian winter song. Yes, I am descended from Kozaks. =Stefan=
Bozhe moy* :D
Actually before Christianity it was a spring's song)
If You would like to sing in english :)
Shchedryk, shchedryk, shchedrivochka
Here flew the swallow from afar
Started to sing lively and loud
Asking the master to come out
Come here, oh come, master - it’s time
In the sheepfold wonders to find
Your lovely sheep have given birth
To little lams of great worth
All of your wares are very fine
Coin you will have in a big pile
All of your wares are very fine
Coin you will have in a big pile
You have a wife
Fair as a dove
If not the coin, then the chaff
You have a wife fair as a dove
We were dancers. We were free
Najpiękniejsze wykonanie 😍

Amazing video .
Glory to UKraine!
Len! As a great grand niece once or twice removed of Mykola Leontovytch's, I heartily approve!
Slava Ukraini!!! Hail the heroes!!!
been searching for the source of this fantastic rhythm. finally I get to the source.
браво!
I dare someone to tell me this wasn't mad lit! Shit went hella hard!
I was searching for a metal version with lyrics in the original language. So far this is the winner.
Love you guys! Beautiful one!
Glory ukrainian song!
I'm Christian, but I do still acknowledge the origins of this song, and my Ukrainian roots respect that too. Glory to God, but at the same time Slava Ukraina!
While it has ancient origins, the version that became Carol of the Bells was arranged by Mykola Leontovych, who wrote the first litany in the Ukranian vernacular, and is recognised as a martyr in the Eastern Orthodox Church (he was murdered by a Soviet agent)
@@capoeirastronaut Wow! The layers keep building with this one!!... Thank you for sharing.
If Ukraine is the term from Comminist era and hate towards God is it a bit contradictory? Maybe it is better to put God and Malorussia together, instead Ukraine
Ancient Slavs celebrated New Year on 21st March, that's why it talks about a swallow. Swallows usually don't fly around in the freezing winter XD.
Can I please get lyrics? I would love to be able to sing this awesome song

Len Liggins thank very much!
Here is an adaptation of the Ukrainian original text into English followed by the Ukrainian www.shchedryk.com
Slava Ukraine
@@user-ez8tr1ym9b Thank you, I should have asked my wife, she's Ukrainian. I usually write it in Cyrillic (by copying and pasting, not that I speak the language) But I do love Ukraine and have spent lot's of time there.
also, no tikis involved
Zirka From Canada?
Yes ,i listen Ukrainian with Canadian accent..
the band is based in the UK and the video was filmed in West Yorkshire :)
Everytime I watch this, I cry bc of the betrayal my pagan ancestors must've felt when this was done to them
Many adopted Christianity willingly, knowing they could practice both and the priests could do little about it if they never saw it. Some also willingly walked away from their older traditions for a host of reasons. It's more complicated than your desire to have a reason to feel outrage will currently permit. And I speak as a Pagan. History is messy and complicated. Your simplification is not kind to your ancestors' memories.

Paganism will return one day to the masses.

@@LuccaMorandin They are not pagans, they are rodnoviercy! Same like native americans are not indians. Pagan is the word which came from christians. So stick it back to your ass and keep there. 😜
@@BarcaaFan_1899 um, it's already happening. stay mad about it tho. the old ways will return.
I’m not a Christian or any related religion because I believe that if there is a God, there is a Goddess. Not “Mrs God” but her own force. So what’s the point? Just that I believe any practices are okay as long as they don’t harm others. Your music somehow reinforces my beliefs.
don’t worry, it’s a pagan song! Theres no gods, just a reminder of ukrainian paganism :) bc it’s origin is from ukraine.
@@hellboundlilykpopvids9089 no worries. Great song. It’s fun telling people who love Carol Of The Bells the origin of that song. I don’t really respect all religions but I do respect good people of any religion. I love Ukrainian music and Ukraine too. Also Nordic (I guess.) music like Heilung. And Aurora’s own unique music. Speaking of Ukrainian groups, do you know Jinjer with Tatiana? I tell everyone to do Pisces live LIFA first.
Ukrainians are Pagan😊
Yeah! And now the entire world is! Ukraine made them that way! This song is wildly celebrated around the world! 🇺🇦❤️
