For a few of reasons: 1) you're incredible and I believe greatness deserves an audience. 2) there are so many things I've told myself I can't do because I "passed that point my life". I'm a little upset as a ballet teacher that this is a thing, honestly.
It does make sense! I am a ballroom dancer, and what you said makes perfect sense, as in ballroom dancing turns always start with shoulders. Its cool to see interconnections between styles!

I’m a former dancer/dance teacher who is just getting back into it for fun and I can attest to this. The funny thing now is when I try for second turns or fouettés, I have the muscle memory and the form to do them, but I’m missing the leg strength (still rebuilding) so after the first couple, it turns into a fight for my life with only my arms giving me any meaningful moment 😅 (Also when I was a teacher, I was the “mean” teacher that the advanced girls ended up loving because I would drill them on turns and not let them rotate until they could show proper form and control while facing forward. They thought it was hard and boring at first but then their turns go exponentially better and they learned to appreciate my tactics. 😊)
After your explanation & watching the small box in the beginning again, I understand your instruction & see why there is misconception. Very interesting! I don't think I'd ever thought about where the momentum of the turn was coming from before. I love learning things like this.
Thank you for this! Omg thank you for explaining this in a more digestible way than I could. Definitely showing this to my kids tn in Jazz class!!!! Fingers crossed this makes more sense to them:) thank you!
With any turns, your spotting should be what is bringing you around. This girls is right too in that practicing just plie, releve to passe or whichever position you are turning in, without turning is a great excersize. My teachers used to make us do excersize of just passe releve, hold, 8 times, then 8 quarter turns, then halves, singles, doubles, triples, quads, etc. Just doing the plie, passe, hold will build up your strength to turn. You should be pushing up, never around. Concentrate on spotting and your head will take you around and you will stay in releve and balanced.
I want to cry because this beautiful video came about 20 years too late. I have always loved, loved ballet but ballet didn't love me or embrace my figure. You are an inspiration because you should you can have a muscular, gym physique and still do beautiful ballet moves. This video deserves over 1 million views. It should be highly recommended for little girls (and boys) to inspire them to dream.
Yes, this makes sense. I had no clue that’s how it’s supposed to be done. I’m never gonna do ballet (maybe in my dreams), but I respect the strength and talent it takes.
One of my teachers in nyc said its easier to do more turns if you disengage and rengage your core muscles (in the same place of the turn each time). I found it useful, but im not sure if its easier for most people
I absolutely love seeing a dancer who is built like I was when dancing. Your moves are perfection. I hope you don’t get hassled, like I did, about your body. Fifty years ago, I was called plump even though my body fat was only 10%. You’re a more talented dancer than I was. So I hope choreographers see that your talent is phenomenal.
You are TACTLESS to suggest that there is any reason in the world that anyone would “hassle” this girl who made this video, about her body. What’s the matter with you people?

Do you watch Eva Nys' videos? She's a ballet photog who started ballet lessons last year at 26. Many think she's rushing pointe shoes, but her videos may help you in starting ballet lessons. People begin thru senior citizen hood, so 36 is young. But if you can take classes, do. And remember, pointe requires that you already have very strong feet, ankles, legs, and core. You can cripple yourself (and surgery is so expensive!) if you don't work up to pointe. Watch the vids and read what the dancers say. But follow your heart re: ballet! You're not too old!

I always loose balance and spotting makes it worse but something that helps me is having your foot touch the ground instead of it going down a little and keeping my arms out with my hands in a fist
