This is a nice airplane, with some excellent/simple features. This is an insightful company finding a good way to help bring sport aviation to a larger audience of people. I hope that they continue to develop and fix the issues they are working through, all of the great manufacturers have!
What a cool little plane. Amphibious and ground landings is the ultimate versatility for an airplane. I see it more like an RV than a practical travel tool. It's capabilities are truly amazing for such a small plane. The video was SPECTACULAR!
Citation Mustang Pilot If this was my channel Jason Holbrook's comments would be deleted for not constructively contributing to the conversation. Pilot error in all three of the only crashes of the Icon A5. Nothing wrong with the plane or it's design. It's safer than most planes on the market today. If you don't have the experience to hot dog a plane you shouldn't do it, and if you don't know where you are you shouldn't be flying low in the mountains. The planes designer, second A5 accident, thought he was flying into a different canyon that dipped into a lake. Not the planes fault the pilot didn't check his location before heading into a canyon. The other two accidents were the pilots hot dogging at low altitude with minimal time in type aircraft. Hence the saying; "There are Bold Pilot and Old Pilots, but there a few Old Bold pilots"! You should know your aircraft and facts before you say the Icon A5 is a bad design. Best Wishes n Blessings.
^ This. So far the Icon A5 has no reported failures, and the only incidents with it have been due to pilot error. It's a nice plane, and personally I hope to fly one one day. Anywho - Don't make a argument if you don't have evidence to back it up - and even though I have yet to touch the sky, my numerous crashes and hours in both simplistic Video games and fully-fledged flight sims have cemented this in my mind - If you don't think before doing something possibly fatal, you're an idiot.
This plane didn't seem all that interesting scrolling through the options in flight simulator. After flying it it's now one of my favorite! Such a cool little plane
Microsoft's new flight sim is absolutely amazing for sight seeing. I just flew the Icon A5(it can land on water!) out of Seattle WA. 96 miles south to Mt. St. Helens! The volcano looked incredible as i was coming in from 11,000 ft . Also, there are a couple huge lakes near the mountain, and so I landed the Icon on the one which is on the north side. After the landing I was just floating while enjoying a JAW DROPPING view of Mt. St. Helens from that lake!! I was blown away by that experience. I can't believe how great everything looked and that It was even possible to do that!!!!!! I HIGHLY recommend that flight.
Citation Mustang Pilot just got back from flying it over the weekend and I must say it was really awesome! We flew it out from Vacaville and headed over to lake Berryessa where we did tight turns, stalls, and a bunch of splash and go' son the water, it was an amazing experience. I really enjoyed how smooth and easy the plane was to fly, even did a stall myself, even at low speeds you seem to be able to do anything and it was flat out awesome! Really hope to do it again.
So many people think these A5’s are not safe, I think they are very safe if you fly it normal. I heard that pitcher that died said that the A5 feels like your in a fighter jet. Of course its not even close but that goes to show how he operated it, doing very crazy moves in it. I personally love the plane, just not the price. At the price they want you should be able to choose the best engine possible, Like the 912IS for no additional charge.
That's such a cool little bird, if I ever win the lottery I'll be sure to pick one up HAHA BTW the guy in the right seat has great taste in watches, he was wearing an Omega X-33, one of my personal favorites.
I'm really saddened to read of Jon Karkows demise. What a talented Man he was. I'll bet Kirk Hawkins was beside himself with grief. This aircraft could not possibly have been totally to blame for his untimely death. I would still buy one today. Great friendly instruction agreed. Super video agreed.
I would love to fly one of these! The issue is for me, I would have to have a person that's more concerned about safety than hitting me with a large vocabulary of terminology when really teaching me slowly about what's really important and basic standard procedures would be just fine!
Such an interesting little plane, I like how the interior looks like a car (though I couldn't buy one, I definitely don't have that kind of budget lol).
I can imagine a nice 4th of july weekend with this thing. land bust out a cooler and a small grill on the beach, get wasted and fly back home, after sobering up of course
@@hoobaguy, that is no longer supported by Microsoft. Yes, you can play it, but since it is unsupported, there really isn't any point. I hope they keep it in what will be their new sim in 2020.
The interior of this aircraft is so nicely done it makes me think I am flying a Japanese car. Its a shame such a nice looking aircraft is claimed to have a "bad design" after two accidents in the past 3 months. We need to know the truth about why this plane caused the death of the ICON Designer Jon Karkow. I truly believe it was a pilot error, but we need to know the truth.
This is not a bad design issue. This overall design is used by other manufactures such as the MVP Aero and the Aerodyne Searey. The design is actually very safe when compared to other LS planes.
FAA report says pilot error - pilot entered a canyon that was too narrow to turn around in, and couldn't climb out of - likely he thought it was a different canyon.
Something I read on internet and makes alot of sense to me: ¨In my opinion, it gives pilots a false sense of security that encourages them to take risks. It's advertised as being a "jet ski of the skies." Just like people do dumb things in jet skis, they are going to do dumb things in this plane. Unfortunately, if you do a dumb thing on a jet ski the odds are you just end up skipping into the water. If you do a dumb thing in a plane you're going to have a bad time. If you read about the crash which killed the A5's lead test pilot, he was attempting to fly into a canyon which he thought would drop him out into a lake. It ended up being the wrong canyon and he wasn't able to pull out of it in time. You wouldn't try something like that in a normal airplane. It's the same reason people are more likely to crash a WRX than an S Class."
Max payload is 450 pounds *including* fuel. Yeah, probably not for anyone who is even slightly "over average"... I don't even think I could take my kid as the passenger...
I went to the dealership today, the rudder pedals are adjustable, and they are surprisingly roomy. not huge but youd be surprised how much space you have in that little cockpit.
This plane will be featured in the upcoming Flight Simulator 2020!!!!
Reicito Escobar yeah but that kinda flopped
It's my favorite plane now. Not the fastest but it's very versatile!

for what it is, it's great. A flying jetski

I saw one of these for the first time today, coming in to land at Scottsdale Airport, and just had to see what it was like to fly. Thank you!
Funny I actually saw it too. Departing RWY 12 at about Noon.
One of those times where I wish I lived back in the country somewhere with my own land to fly over.

All commercial passenger planes must be equipped with safe gliding and have the ability to land on water.
Yeah ability to land on water and not break but that doesn't mean they can just land in water and take off
is it flying and swiming car, or driving and flying boat?

How far can u fly with one full tank
Max. 800km.. depending on weight, winds, etc...
Do you need a boat license for the Icon A5?
Can you close the side windows?
Looks fun! I doubt I'd be able to fly in it at 6ft 6 and close to 280.

its, a 4 banger motor with a 20 gallon tank. its got a range of about 400 miles, or 5 hours. they are even cooler in person
so with full fuel the payload is only 330 pounds. you gotta be light if you're taking 2 people up!
