Jersey Surf is so based for that
Was there and it was amazing
Jersey Surf 2004 was my rookie season of drum corps. Didn’t expect to see our Finals performance in a UA-cam video almost 20 years later!
Surfs Up and Git-r-Done! I was in Memphis Sound that season!
What a fun show it was!
I was in the BDB front ensemble that year so I watched it happen from the field and thought it was so cool! The weighted wheel spinning exactly wrong was amazing as well!
I live in Denver, and was in the audience that day. Best ending ever!
One of the reasons Jersey surf is one of my favorite corps is because they play more for audience enjoyment, and less for the judges. Surf ALWAYS has super fun shows!
Lets go surf
You actually missed one that was quite significant. In 1978, the Vanguard and Phantom Regiment tied in prelims. Back then, each piece of dropped equipment in a show was a .1 penalty, and SCV had a .1 penalty in prelims and Phantom was penalty-free. However, in finals, they would have tied again, but SCV went penalty-free, and Phantom had a .1 penalty for I believe a dropped rifle, and thus SCV won by .1. Had they tied that night, it would have been interesting, as the rule at the time called for a "playoff", where both corps would have went again, would have been judged again, until someone won. Going into retreat, all corps were told to be prepared to leave the field quickly should a playoff be required.
Historical penalties that actually meant a lot. The Cavaliers were assessed a one point penalty for a flag code violation (you probably don't know about those) at the VFW Nationals in 1966. This gave the title to The Troopers. In 1970 The Seattle Imperials color guard was assessed a penalty of .01 for inspection at the American Legion Nationals which gave the title to the Santa Clara Vanguard color guard. There are other penalties which cost corps appearances in finals, missing by as little as .005.
What is an inspection penalty?
Not me shocked The Troopers ever took a title
@@christopherbernhardt units were inspected before competing for clean uniforms, haircuts, loose threads and general neatness. Each "tick" was a tenth of a point.
Really enjoying your history/ news journalistic stories on dci! Keep ‘em coming
and the 1988 finals piece was excellent
I marched my Rook-out of Jersey Surf in 2012. At the beginning of William Tell Overture, we originally had a trumpet playing on the podium. Judges told us no. Then they tried to penalize us for kazoos. They told is they were Woodwinds. . . KAZOOS.
Well, technically Kazoos aren't brasswinds and they certainly are not made of wood. Tinwinds? 🤓
DCI judging legit told us they were “Woodwinds”. We were in 20th place. And they were knitpicking kazoos
In 1986, my corps used a set of Simmons pads, mikes, and a sound board in the pit. We voluntarily took a 2-point penalty for every show for the first two weeks because we wanted the mallets miked and we wanted that Simmons sound for drum solo. The next week DCI informed us that on tour, it would be at the contest director's pleasure to penalize OR DQ us, so we stopped. Now mikes are all over the pit, since someone eventually realized there's a lot of moola to be made by partnering with companies that sell sound equipment to bandos.
I appreciate what you do . Drum corp was any amazing time in my life. It still amazes me that there is people that never heard of drum corp. Keep up with the videos.
Ok! My rookie year was in 07 with Troop. I was watching when the cadets did that. They were on the field in their first formation. Brandt Crocker did his “is your corps ready!” He who shall not be named sprinted down the 50 yard line. The drum Major turned their foot do their saltire, saw Voldemort and turned their foot back. They then got back into two lines and walked off the field.
In semi-finals 2019, we (Boston Crusaders) got penalized 1 point because we warmed up outside of the allowed zone. We walked past the signs that said "no warm up past this point" yet still went lol.
We did what we had to do bro
Jersey Surf, what a bad ass move.
I’m sure you’ve read it, but the book building the green machine filled the void for the cavaliers on a lot of stories that could have been lost. I wonder what would happen if you started reaching out to members in each corps and asked them to look for stories and compile a list you can go back and authenticate with multiple sources in each corps
I haven’t read it! Thank you for commenting about this though. I just bought the book!
Definitely worth a read, also 'Tale of a Drum Line' by Lee Rudnicki, about the 1993 Santa Clara Vanguard.
Yo the honorable mentions had me DYING hahaha
I love your channel this was such a great video topic!
Also, according to DCX museum, jersey surf got a 2 point penalty
We did! Membership took a vote the day before on if we were gonna do it or not!
First off your ending rocked! Glad I watched til the end.
Next, I’ll reiterate what was previously said about the great ‘Amen’ by Cadets. They knowingly took the penalty. Soon after, vocals were allowed on the field. (I was in BD ‘81 and we had a vocal we desperately wanted to use but couldn’t until the next year ‘82 when vocals were finally allowed).
Lastly, keep going! You are filling a need in the community that will bring depth and education to current and future members. Plus a lovely nostalgic feel for us oldsters. Keep those memories alive!
You're off by a few years....vocals weren't allowed (outside of the DM/color guard captain) until 1984.
I believe the BD vocal you refer to was the HUH in One More Time, Chuck Corea. The corps DID do t in 82 (at Stilwater, I think) and got penalized for it. In fact, one of the judge tapes clearly says "Sure...take the penalty. Why not?"
@@samsignorelliAh, Sam! Keeping me on my toes. I will now have to relisten to 1982 BD. I could’ve sworn the ’huh!’ was in there. Although I know we were getting the audience to fill in that particular grunt. 1984 for vocals sounds right.
@@Mavroudis1 in 82 the HUH was there from the crowd, but it was weak. 83 was MUCH louder, but it was still the crowd.
And of COURSE I chimed in on something BD....how long have you known me??
@@samsignorelli Probably since the 90s? Were you part of Cybercorps? And wow! The blue Devils taking the penalty during an undefeated season? That’s really ball Z.
@@Mavroudis1 Cybercorps no. SoCal Dream, yes
Mandarins 1991 DCI D3 Finals - Penalized 0.4 because their 4 basses were facing front sideline during warm-ups. They lost to Pioneer by 0.4, so instead of tying with Pioneer for 1st place, they tied for 2nd. The following year, DCI changed the rule so it was no longer a penalty.
love this channel, man
i really liked this video keep it up 😄👍
great video!!
I remember in 07 when everyone gave George so much business for the field paint thing, but in retrospect your analysis is so sensible
I laugh my you know what off when I heard what Mr. Hopkins complained about the yard lines. If your corps is that good, You dont need to know where the 50 yard line is. Oh by the way, I marched with the Kingsmem Alumni Corps in 07 at the Rose Bowl.
@@b42baritone had the slide step been invented by the time you aged out?
Cadets 77' "No Vocal Amen due to 1 point penalty"
Yup, i remember marching the rose bowl show when we were randomly added to the roster after our show schedule was revealed. I slipped and fell during the ballad, and in front of a judge 😊 i wasn't the only one though, lol.
The grass seemed extremely well maintained and looked like turf, but marching on it was terrifying
I really liked the Rose Bowl reference with the hashmarks. When I marched in DCA, we did two shows a season on baseball fields. No hashmarks, not even a 50-yard line. Interesting.
I was there live for Jersey Surf. They tore the house DOWN for it. Worth
For the algorithm. ✊
I haven’t even seen the video, and already know there will be mention of the baby powder incident
I remember at DCI Finals in '81 when Golden Garrison, having one of the best drumlines in Div A, their drumline was "written off the charts". Meaning the judges tanked them. Ken Mazure was furious.
More content 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
Good video.
As soon as the Axel-F started playing i immedistely thought of 5:13 Peter from Family Guy humming it while dancing with Cleveland...
1987 Rocky Mountain Magic used a synthesizer knowing there would be a penalty. They were still beating Mandarins and every other Div 2 corps they competed against that season (even beating former AL/VFW champion Troopers once at DATR Colo Springs) until they ran out of money and ended the season before finals. Mandarins went on to win Class A-60. And now nobody has ever heard of the Rocky Mountain Magic.
So true about the rose bowl
1:26 Tmk BD got the Colts training facility in 2009 because all the other places possible in the Indianapolis area were taken, if thats what you meant by that
Pretty sure 2013 was the first yr they got explicit access for indoor practice
no I was referring to warm up zones in indie not rehearsal spaces.
People in the 80s: omg I love electronics.
The same people now: Omg I hate electronics.
Standing by generators purring on side lines now very unmusical
My high school won first place at our final show and we were within 10 seconds of a timing penalty
The best
The cadets were a w for the hash thing
Very cool fun post...Wow drumlines sound amazing.... Did you run audio through filters?
No just rendered using a constant bit rate rather than a variable bit rate
@@CJsMusicTrumpet well you're an audio genius and I reeeaally wish you were employed by Flo at a very high rate of compensation
lol I wish I could agree. I didn’t do anything crazy to the audio. Flo just sucks.
Jersey surf common W
In 2014 Crossmen got a penalty in warmup (for what I don’t know), that almost cost them finals to Colts. With the penalty, they beat Colts by just .1 points.
PC could never be penalized at finals, because we never make it to finals 😎
The seats are crap at the rose bowl too.
Pretty sure 2013 was the yr bd got explicit permission to have the indoor facility
The Rose Bowl still sucks to this day? Are you kidding me!? I aged out in 2007 with Blue Devils and I remembered this penalty. I agreed with George Hopkins in that the lining of the field needed to be way better. When you have intervals that are two steps apart and you are turning your horn to the front you need to see yard lines. The Rose Bowl felt like you're marching on floor
2001 madison dropped a spot finals night because of a late to the gate penalty.
1:33 rip IUPUI (or oooeypooey, as is more fun to say), Purdue and IU got a divorce so now it’s just IUI
Madison routinely got hit with penalties for moving/kicking orange cones in the 90’s.
Blue Devils warm up seperately from everyone else because when DCI asks who wants to use the Colts practice field, everyone says no.
Not what I mean that’s not what the warm up zone is. that’s the rehearsal site.
Personally, I think just electric guitar and bass guitar don’t do drum corps justice. I’m ok with synthesizers, though I’m biased because my junior year’s marching band show had synths. My all-time favorite DCI show, Babylon had a synthesizer featured prominently.
BAC got scammed in 2013
Yeah...I was there for 2013 and I didn't even notice the powder...guess I was blind
What no Madison cone kicking?
For the algorithm
Why are metronomes not allowed for use during warm up?
They are but not outside the designated zones
1980 Skyriders. Birds can't fly in DCI!
Bluecoats 2015 was way better than blue devils
Regarding Boston and Axel-F; This is what bugs me most about "evolutionary" Drum corps changes. There is simply no rational reason for it! The iconic Axel-F theme is PERFECTLY suited for mallets. The EXACT SAME SHOW can exist without the synth. And the moment you shut off that damn voice-over you improve every show that ever used it, too.
I mean. It was cool
@@hunterbritton1865 I get it. But seriously, "it was cool" is how well run organizations die.
Good thing "We Will Never Die" is part of our corps song. If going bankrupt in 1982 didnt kill us I dont think synths will@@nannyg666
dci’s dying anyway dawgs 😔
There should be rules against QR codes and keytar solos.
I feel like you’re alluding to certain shows from 2022 but I can’t put my finger on it…
What are these elements doing to need a penalty?
They’re gonna make a show about you in the future.
I wish they would setup a rule that said penalties would carry over to future rounds of competition. BD wouldn't have won that year as a result, I would bet.
why would you anyone ever want this. Performances should be judged night to night. not because you don't want certain corps to win because of a penalty on one night
