it was my only hope and i was so angry when i got the game years after its death only to find the one option for a souls like game with real people smashed by the devs leaving the game to die... it hurt, a lot, and i felt like the devs shouls be ruined for what they did... thankfuly i got pc in time... ill never go back to mac, they dont treat theyre customers right.
I look up this game every month or two just to see if any progress has been made on it. Makes me sad everytime I see nothing, Lots of potential gone to waste. (Good video btw)
Found this video while looking for a reason to pick this game back up again since dropping it shortly after launch. After watching this I still don't feel like playing. But I looked at the view count and it only had 106 views? Which is crazy because this is actually a really good review video imo. The guys voice is nice to listen to. It's pretty informative. Good gameplay showcasing footage. Great knowledge of actual game design. Keep it up dude. I subbed. You're doin good work here.
I remember breaking this game by jumping off the edge of the maps everytime I saw something like a spire or pillar below. I ended up jumping my way to the last level and finding an op fire thrower and proceeded to kite the big boss thing with it. Good times.
Despite the flak this game got, I love it. I can definitely see its flaws, which is the most upsetting thing to me. This game has so much charm and definitely (as you said) leaves me wanting more. I hope hairbrained schemes come back to this or release it to the public so that it's small fanbase can add their own improvements. If this game ever gets a sequel it'd definitely gonna be on my wishlist
Yup. I got sold on the hype as well. Makes me feel really bitter toward a studio when that happens, even if some people say they've done good since. ahemhemHelloGameshemhem
Just a side note: Roguelike and Roguelite are not interchangeable. Rogue likes are completely random each time with no continuity between runs. Rogue lites have unlocks that can go from one run to another.
Such a shame, I was following this one before release, tried it out, saw it was unfinished and decided to wait a while, only for the devs to abandon it
Honestly I think the flame blaster is bugged or something, cause all the other crossbows have slow rate of fire compared to this one, maybe they forgot to add endlag lol
I remember enjoying Necropolis when it came out, but was disappointed when it was abandoned. Then I was angered when they released "Brutal Edition" as a separate game and abandoned that too.
Great review, you hit the nail right on the head :) game is 75% off on steam until the 21st. I've been waiting to pick this up for a while now and I'm loving it for the price I paid but wouldn't have bought it full price
I enjoy this game. By the way, I pretty much always go for both sides of Lvl 1, it really helps with the consistency of the run to guarantee that you at least have enough currency to buy a decent weapon for level 2 if you get unlucky with RNG.
Ashen came out yesterday, ive been waiting on it for years. You should check it out if you haven't already. It's really good. Kinda reminded me of this game
I saw this game on Splattercat''s channel and like you said the games potential is really high but it felt like it was half completed and then released. Such a shame but maybe they'll come back to it.
ProbablyJacob yeah. If a level generates in a certain way such as the next level being right below the the current level, you can descend off of platforms that may generate. It’s also possible to walk on top of levels and skip in door areas. I discovered these things on accident.
I grabbed this game on sale and, it's kinda.... lackluster, but the basics are pretty much all there. I just wish enemies would properly telegraph their attacks like they're supposed to as opposed to just initiating the attack animation instantly. That is SUPER annoying.
I really wanted to play this game, the art style looked so cool that I couldn't get it out of my head. The game had a mixed reception in the reviews section of Steam, but I still wanted to give it a try. I was so disappointed when I loaded it up and I couldn't even get the game to run on my laptop. I was on a MacBook and it fit the requirements, but it kept flickering on and off and was horribly slow. It was the first game I ever had to refund.
If you like roguelites (yes, my mother never hugged me) like this you should consider trying actual, traditional roguelikes like Brogue or DCSS, where common roguelite tropes like procedurally generated, unidentified scrolls & potions originate from. They’re kind of infamous for being extremely dense mechanically, requiring an extremely huge omega genius brain to comprehend, and almost always having god awful graphics, but beyond that I think they’re some of the most interesting games out there.
I tried Nethack. Dont know about stone soup, or angband, but that felt mechanically very empty compared to its contemporary ascii alternatives, like cdda.
I'm always looking for interesting games to play but I refuse to support devs who ship games with broken achievements (Xbox) and can't be bothered to fix them. And this game has a broken achievement. I'd never heard of it before but it looks decent enough and is on sale, but the achievement issue is a deal breaker for me. PS: love your review style.
I had really high hopes when I picked it up and played. Haven't even got the te end before it got boring. It's empty and feels very rushed. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of this kinda rouglike, even te stamina system where you get progressively more tired and have to rest is somewhat innovative. But the main focus, which is exploration and fighting is very rough. The rooms feel empty and the rewards you get get quite repetitive after some time, the movement/jumping is clunky and the fighting feels off. Comparing it (I know is a different leauge) to one of more influential inspirations - Dark Souls (where the combat is spot on, all your actions feel and look very satisfying and you are well aware what you can and cannot do) Necropolis feels just unfinished. It's a shame how much wasted potential there is.
@@ProbablyJacob Ashen is great, if you haven't played it yet, I highly recommend it. Dark souls is my favorite game series, Ashen does that style of game justice, by giving you a somewhat open world, with the ability to finish any quest in any order that you wish. It has that minimalistic art style, but yet, it has a ton of atmospheric details. I recommend it, highly
Im glad you and so many others like this video. Ive progressed a lot since i made this one (I think) so it makes me think i might be making something decent
i hated, and really i was hurt by the devs of this game abandoning it, it was my only hope at dark souls like gameply with other real people for years after playing and beating ds 2 alone and i hated them for smashing my only hope at joining the closest thing to the ds comunity id ever get while stuck with mac... i have pc now... ill never even consider going back to mac.

Yeah, nobody follows that definition. Thats about as fucking stupid as confining FPS to games mechanically identical to the original doom. You could say that there is a subgenre of rouglikes that are rouge clones, with titles like caves of qud and sots the pit, but then you have to decide wether procgenned rpgs like dorf fort adventure mod, or CDDA fits your definition.
I feel like if this game wasn’t abandoned, more people would play this game. I love this game btw
As a new player I'm so sad to see this game has become its namesake.
I feel this is the same thing that happened absolver

I didn’t even realize it was only between 100-200 views. His production value makes it seem way more than that.

I'm playing through this game right now and no way this isn't baiting me to jump off ledges- Are you actually being real right now?

You need to look for things to jump to. Can't just yet yourself off the edge and hope for the best. But try it and see

If only HBS didn’t completely fucking abandon the game with no real reason or announcement.
Inspires ya to make characters like: Big Guy Go Fast, and Small Guy Hit Hard, or even Stick Man Get Fat.

Not to mention, it’s possible to skip an entire level by jumping down with out respawning

yeah i also noticed that enemies can randomly instantly attack, its pretty cheesey
Looks like a lot of fun, actually. I’ll likely give it a whirl myself.
During the editing for this video i kept wanting to go back and play it, which is a good sign
Has anyone played it since? I looked up a review because it's on sale for $8, would anyone say it's worth?
The difficulty of multiplayer is accidentally hitting each other and fighting over loot
I want a new contain but I feel the developer take off from necropolis
Have you tried Unexplored? It's not third person but it's a challenging rogue lite game with real time combat
I havent, ill put it on my list
3rd person rouge-lite is all I want but there are so few of them
Small man go fast and big boy hit hard are my new terms
This game is great! (if you get it on sale for 10$)
great vid btw
You need more subs man. This was some good shit

Thats unfortunate, probably has to to with how the game is optimized
