The reception this game has gotten has made me realize me how completely unknown Spanish culture is worldwide. This whole game is not based on Catholicism in general, but on the traditions of the Holy Week, and the Holy Week of Seville in particular, since that's where the developers are from. For a whole week every year, the entire city gets paralyzed while tens of thousands of people (nazarenos) with "pointy hats" (capirotes) take over the streets, escorting images of Christ and the virgin Mary on exhausting processions intended as penitence, carrying 5+ feet long candles, staves or crosses, some barefooted. It is inescapable, and everyone grows up seeing the imagery that's represented here. Some people love it, some take the days off and go to the beach, and there's also the ones who grow bitter hating it and end up making things like this game, depicting it at its most grotesque while keeping the details just different enough to avoid being sued by the churches (this happened in the early 2000s when an edgy local band included a flash game in one of their CDs that had you shoot zombified versions of various religious brotherhoods). Having this meta knowledge about the game, you realize how pointless trying to analyze the lore is, because the whole thing is just a an excuse to have a mishmash of local references. To name a few: - The lady of the charred visage is this woman retenidoseneltiempo.blogspot.com/2010/08/dona-maria-coronel.html , whose remains are kept in a convent in a central Sevillian street bearing her name, that is open to the public once a year. She burned her own face with oil to stop the king from chasing her after being responsible for her husband's death, or so the story goes. - Eldest brother (hermano mayor), is simply the title given to the person who leads one of the brotherhoods, and this guy 3.bp.blogspot.com/-ihgvgQQ5ruw/UvnSJpT326I/AAAAAAAADd8/xHkTap7qOEo/s1600/Eduardo+del+Rey.JPG is the real eldest brother of the Brotherhood of Silence that the protagonist belongs to (Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow in the game). The eldest brother seems to be the first boss, called warden of the silent sorrow. - Penitents in real life are forbidden from speaking or wearing anything that could be used to identify them, which is why the protagonist doesn't speak either. - The woman who gives health extensions is la virgen de los dolores, a representation of Mary suffering her seven sorrows as swords piercing her heart: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/17/Salamanca_-_Iglesia_de_la_Vera_Cruz_12.jpg - The enemy called Amargura is simply the real life 'paso' belonging to the brotherhood of La Amargura, but instead of having Christ in chains, there's a single hand holding a chain: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a1/SemanaSantaSevillaAmargura1.jpeg/1024px-SemanaSantaSevillaAmargura1.jpeg - At some point in the game there are women wearing black mantillas over peinetas, another holy week tradition i.pinimg.com/originals/81/cc/b3/81ccb311c35403369671cf660331eccb.jpg The whole thing is like this, which is why finding the references and the real life lore associated to them is more interesting than piecing together some made up plot.

I have not played a Dark Souls game for more than a few hours, but let me try... ok so basically a long long long long time ago dragons ruled the world, but then somehow a couple gods came and harnessed the power of fire. The gods were known as Skellyboi,Demonchick, Gwyn, and Lil P, Skellyboi unleashed various forms of death on the dragons, Demonchick made monster chicks, Gwyn had the power of friendship by his side, and Lil P made humanity. So after killing stuff and bringing about a new age of prosperity for the gods with the help of the great flame, the flame started to wither, and with that.. would come the age of man and the gods would be rendered... powerless. Gwyn saw this and sacrificed himself to the flame so everyone could still be immortal... the bad thing is that didn't mean your body was.. so everyone became zombies
@@sethleoric2598 One important mistake: everyone became zombies because Flame was withering. Humanity (and maybe everyone except Dragons) couldn't live without Flame. Solid review and this game actually looks like a lot of fun. I love how it has a unique art style while still feeling like an old school game. Edit: I made this comment before I saw big baby and i take back everything. Have a good day.
if only people understood the difference between an subjective experience and an objective criticism. that fight isn't the best, but it's far more functional and fun then this person gave it credit for. not doubting their experience but i've fought this boss 4 (ish) times and the only time i approached it like him was when i was clearly over leveled. it's a good boss, it has a one shot move, bullet hell patterns, a pretty generious sweet spot and multiple good options for strategy. if you leave this fight till later in the game, it's very monotonous because you can just spam attacks and have enough health to tank hits. but if you hit the sweet spot, you've got a good fight. like any other really. it's definitely not trash.. no bosses in this game are objectively bad. either by design or programing.
If you could have a game with the gameplay of Bloodstained but the art style and tone of Blasphemous I'd take my laptop to an abandoned monastery and I'd play it forever.
Good review, you mention some important details, the ledge grabbing and moving platforms are very finicky, you have to jump well over them to not fall through. The exposito boss is pretty bad design also true, visually he's one of the best. I spammed charge attacks on the tail to get my no heal kill. The slowdown pace thing didn't bother me that much in most places but the crying mountains did bother me tho. Also the Smurfs getting stuck in the spikes bothered me. Great game despite these few issues, very recommend it.
In a recent(and objectively massive) update, they fixed the issue of annoying, pixel-perfect platforming by adding a few ghost frames for your jump. For anyone who doesn't know, it's a thing that a lot of platformers use to make platforming feel more natural by letting you jump a few frames after you leave a platform.
Well done! Just found your channel tonight, as I have played and been playing Blasphemous for about a year now. The hame takes the "Penance for Guilt" of many Judeo-Christian beliefs and adds Metroidvania to it. As someone who gre up very religious but also very Black Sheep, there is a lot of emotion here. The Bloodstained cross-over was great and looking forward to announved Blasphemous 2! Also new free DLC on Dec 9th I believe!!

I quite like this game. My least favorite part is the instakill spikes though. What on earth would have been lost of they had it so that landing in a spike pit deals heavy damage and teleports you to the last "safe" land you were on? Instead, it just artificially drew out some of the difficult platforming by sending me back to the altar thing every time I made a single mistake (and several times where it felt like the game was thr one messing up). If you're going to have difficult precision platforming in a metroidvania, the last thing you want is for your player to instantly die the moment they fail, unless literally everything in the game one-shots the player (which would be frustrating in its own right, but at least then it would be consistent with the rest of the game's challenge).
Yeah, it's one of the inconsistencies of the game that baffles me. The retracting spike traps doesn't insta-kill you but spike pits does? doesn't make sense but I enjoy every agonizing moment of Blasphemous.

I agree with a lot of your arguments in your video. I love this game because of how solid it is. I feel like the obtuse story isn't a big deal personnaly since it incourages people to dig dipper but the kickstarter campaign kinda ruins this argument. A lot of lore tid-bits where given during it throught art drawn for it and with the comic that can be bought. But I feel like even throught all that it's still an awesome game with is indicative of it's quality. Thank you for giving this game a fair review without just stopping at surface level stuff.
The baby actually has some tells.you missed I was able to go stand under the snake and just spam upwards attacks ... there are spots that offer immunity to the bosses attacks where you wont be hit
Many of the platforming jumps are spaced out because you can get a mid-air boost hitting enemies twice in mid-air similar to Messenger. Sadly, the game doesn't explain this in the tutorial.
I really want this game physical but this thing is so expensive on eBay I wish a limited company would do a re-release on it and I could get to it before the scalpers did
So the design philosophy behind this game called to mind mega man x for me, more often than any other recent metroidvania I’ve played. I mean, it clearly wears the castlevania on its sleeve. The platforming, sliding (which I used over the parry often) and the more deliberate movement were fantastic and much more mega man, to me
As a Christian myself, I absolutely adore mythologized versions of Christianity in games. It makes it so much more personal to see the thing that's defined my moral life turned into something different, usually corrupted or far more mystical. The Castlevania anime's focus on the darker aspects of the church, all of Blasphemous' world, Columbia's religiously feverish cult that combines Protestant faith with extreme American patriotism integrated into it, Agony's incredibly creative and haunting depiction of hell, the worshippers of the Light in Darkest Dungeon, just to name a few. And to be honest, I can't fully explain why I love it so much. It's just fascinating to see.
You might want to check out Inquisitor sometime. A hack & slash game in the style of Diablo, the most notable aspect is the presentation of the setting. Dialogue-heavy and verbose, the game has the player working for the church - rooting out assumed evils, torturing folks, obeying the letter of the law, and so forth. Unfortunately, the actual gameplay of Inqusitor is...bad. Dull. Tedious. Imagine a game that emulated Diablo 1, but enemies have triple the health and are dimmer.
This is one of my favourite games of all time. I don't even love 2D games as much. The updated and upgraded version is essential and definitely what the devs wanted to put out first thing, but ran out of time or money.
awesome review! i may pick this up, im diggin the art style and aesthetics..... "add their own headcanon to the game" oh wow ive only seen the word "headcanon" used in nerdy fandom circles...... is this term becoming more """""mainstream"""""
Nice review. I loved the game too. I agree with you on the story being vague/cryptic/hidden, though I must say it added an element of mystery which I enjoyed. After I finished the game I was immediately wondering what it all meant and felt compelled to play through it again to get a better grasp of the story. The story feels like a puzzle the player needs to put together. I like that, but maybe it's not everything's thing.
Good video, you encapsulated well what the game offers, don´t fully agree on the plot parts or the mountain section though. Totally one of the best games I played in the last few years. The expansions added a lot of cool stuff to revisit this gem and it shows a lot of love and care from the devs.
Funnily enough I asked my Christian friends what they thought of this. According to them, it’s not actually blasphemy. The game is mostly gorey, the lore is inspired by Spanish Christianity; key word being “inspired”. Had they dropped some names like God or Jesus Christ then we’d probably have a different situation on our hands.
Can't wait to check this game out. Love the animation, instead of romanticized darkness, this has a super bleak vibe to it and the attacks look snappy, but weapons look solid and heavy. Thanks for the video and letting me know about the game.
Hey dude I’ve just started watching videos on your channel and I have to say, you do these video games justice, and most especially this one. You mentioned exactly what I was thinking in my first and second okay through of the game, though then I thought I was just being a big souls-like and castlevania fanboy and had a very biased opinion. Thanks so much for this and I hope you keep making videos. That being said, please also work in post editing videos, and if you haven’t already, make a script. There are some small mistakes, but they don’t bring down the quality and enjoyability of your videos significantly.
The difficulty in this game is very off-putting to me. Not that I believe that a challenging game is not fun. I beat souls and sekiro alike. I love nioh. But in this metroidvania feels off-putting as hell. Like it's somewhat out of place and not at all fitting for the enemies range and damage. I wish this was more like SotN or at least a rogue like game. then I wouldn't be bothered. But the backtracking after the deaths doesn't make me feel like I'm getting gud. And platforming and endless pits are horribly balanced. A shame, the artstyle and world is so unique. I don't have time to redo sections over and over again because someone as a interstellar range and I was thrown at a bottomless pit.
I’m a sucker for cryptic backstories, and dark souls quenches that thirst better than any other genre I’ve found. That being said, blasphemous really was missing that backstory part. I don’t mind it being hidden, but you should be able to find an answer if you look for it. Like, you should know the weight of the world and monsters you fight.
I agree with most of what you said. I also disliked the no running when slashing. Reminds me of some old school nes games that makes it harder for the player for no reason.
I think the soundtrack alone would make anyone buy this game. Or forget about the game entirely, just buy the soundtrack, is the best thing i have heard come from a game in a while.
I absolutely love your reviews and think you deserve so many subs, but its "vague" not "vagg"... Sorry your content is so good it's pure nitpicking at this point.
Hey, Jacob, the new update to Blasphemous supposedly added a bunch of stuff. Dunno if it'll change much, but I wonder if it changes any of the things you had issue with back when this was made.
The way he says vague and plague gets me XD I think it's the same way people who read it quite a few times before they heard it out loud say it. Please say bagel in another video, i wanna hear if you say it like Dan harmon :D

Great video! But just 1 thing...leaving the mouse arrow on screen drives me up the walls.
Fantastic review, good job !
Am I the only one who gets CD-I Zelda vibes from the cutscene with the lady who gives you more HP?
Hey dude I’ve just started watching videos on your channel and I have to say, you do these video games justice, and most especially this one. You mentioned exactly what I was thinking in my first and second okay through of the game, though then I thought I was just being a big souls-like and castlevania fanboy and had a very biased opinion. Thanks so much for this and I hope you keep making videos. That being said, please also work in post editing videos, and if you haven’t already, make a script. There are some small mistakes, but they don’t bring down the quality and enjoyability of your videos significantly.
How could I possibly not sub to a fellow nerdy white guy with the same name as me?
Love your content Jake.
Keep it up.
Amazing review. Was on the fence but now I think I can make an intelligent decision on this.
How is no one mentioning Salt and Sanctuary, it’s amazing.
For real dude
Maybe it is because I'm fdom Spain but the story of this game it's better and clearer than the story of Dark Souls.
A single screenshot of The Bed of Chaos is enough to be a trigger.
Fun fact: Expósito (like our friend giant baby) is a surname given to people who were abandoned as babies and taken in by a convent
You got yourself a sub. Pretty much my thoughts exactly and very well put together. Keep it up and you'll be up there with them boys.
You know, the game actually got advertised with a trailer exactly like the one you made at the end of the video.
Bought this game day one.. Still cant beat the female boss in the last rooftops
Thanks for the masterful review. This game is now in my wishlist.
Your reviews are so well made and funny, great work!
keep up the work!
i'm looking forward for more videos in the future because I love your reviews
I love this game but dear god the struggle of crisanta has left me taking a break from her because just that damage
Damn it Jacob, the effin cursor, why?!
I was a young man then. Strong.
@@ProbablyJacob 🤣🤣🤣
If you're into Berserk and/or Claymore then the visuals of this game will satisfy you
Jacob: The game is called Blasphemous
Also Jacob: The game is called Blasphemy
No. It's Blasphemy. He said so.
Great review, but I think you could talk about the music wich is also great.
I’m on that fire boss now.
i was on the fence since its on sale on psn but you helped me make up my mind thanks :)
Very good review once again! 👍
Do you plan on doing an update with the DLC in mind?
Tfw big baby looks the most like a standard metroidvania boss and all others look amazing
Loved every second of Blasphemicous
Yes. I love Blasphemicousnousfulltion.
Good and well written review. Commenting for support.
Btw, most of the problems of the video are solved in the DLC
Who needs salvation when you have double jump?
This is the first video of yours I watched and I really love your style! What editing software do you use?
This game awakens the sanish penitent inside me
A game comes really to life with a good soundtrack and Blasphemous has a fantastic soundtrack.
Why is there a white pixel on my screen?🤣
_"everyone is praying for forgiveness and im praying for double jump."_ fck u man i spat my coffee out laughing like a donkey
I agree with most of what you said. I also disliked the no running when slashing. Reminds me of some old school nes games that makes it harder for the player for no reason.
where is that god damn location at 10:00?
I think the soundtrack alone would make anyone buy this game. Or forget about the game entirely, just buy the soundtrack, is the best thing i have heard come from a game in a while.
17:24 Where all Hoo-ha's wither
Sold. And subscribed. You had me at HELLo
Blasphemous is the most metal metroidvania if ever scene!!!
As a former Catholic, the "turbo Catholicism" phrase is probably one of the best descriptions I've heard in a LONG time. Made my day
I absolutely love your reviews and think you deserve so many subs, but its "vague" not "vagg"... Sorry your content is so good it's pure nitpicking at this point.
Blasphemous 2 needs to be Islamic themed.
Hey, Jacob, the new update to Blasphemous supposedly added a bunch of stuff. Dunno if it'll change much, but I wonder if it changes any of the things you had issue with back when this was made.
The Spanish Inquisition, unironically, fucking ruled.
The way he says vague and plague gets me XD I think it's the same way people who read it quite a few times before they heard it out loud say it. Please say bagel in another video, i wanna hear if you say it like Dan harmon :D
Bought it on the aesthetic alone, refunded it and got Ori instead I hated the movement so much
I want to buy this game or trade games for it but I can't find it.
You should review hollow knight another more recent top quality metroidvania
Can you review “The Order 1886”? Please
