I enjoy watching Hank and Wiley doing these videos. I am unable to do any of this type of tom foolery anymore and I find it soothing to watch you guys making mistakes, but keeping it going and giving it all you have got to get it done. Thanks for letting me work vicariously through your efforts, God Bless you and your families.

The Ether Lock might be because the ignition could occur too far before TDC, and cause the engine to want to spin backwards. I remember using Ether, Castor Oil and Parafin in a small model aero engine, you had to get the compression screw set just right, as that affected the timing.

Normally the only time you will run into a problem with either ( saying you use it responsible) is when someone uses it in conjunction with glow plugs ....the glow plugs cause an explosion way greater than that of normal combustion also off time that blow the heads apart mostly on small diesels.

Ether lockes it up or tries to pop it back in the other direction because the air temperature in the cylinder as it is compressing surpasses the ether's auto ignition/flash point causing it to combust before it reaches top of stroke causing it to try to power back the other direction while the engine is still actively trying to compress. The results are typically a clattering sound from the engine that surpasses the normal diesel sound and it "can" cause bending of rods etc. Do not recommend using ether on anything newer but older engines some of them came with ether systems built into the vehicle/machine. I don't like the sound of a diesel, even an older one being started on ether because to me it just screams possible damage happening but its apparently fine up to a point on older equipment.

I do believe it was Detroit Diesel research I read. According to them, they researched ether injections in the 70s or 80s cannot remember, due to engine wear. 40s 50s 60s About 200,000 miles were common for them. That is really low miles for a diesel. What they found was it whitewashes the cylinders, which is removing the oil on the cylinder walls you are now doing metal rings on metal cylinders. Also, it increases the compression by three times the normal amount. That could explain why some experience engine lock-up or vapor lock. How you are supposed to apply ether if needed is by spraying it on a rag and placing that in front of the intake. I had a 1985 Ford F250 6.9L 4spd 4wd which is why I started researching ether. 20 to 30-degree weather it had no problems starting up. Cycle the key three times and it would fire right up. I kept doing regular resistance checks on the glow plugs. It did not have ring or valve problems causing low compression.

A cousin of mine operated a Galion motor grader in Canaveral Groves Brevard County FL back in the late 1960's through the mid to late1970's he is no longer with us but seeing this grader brings back good memories if him he served in the Army in Vietnam where he learned to operate heavy equipment. Either dries out the cylinder of the lubrications for the rings if you use to much it will cause the motor to lockup I have never had it happen I seen it happen to my father in law he was a mechanic for many years I meet him and married his daughter back in the late1970's.

I'm presuming that's why the can says that it comes with upper cylinder lubricant to prevent that exact situation from happening. I don't know if that's true but it sounds like it makes sense
