Last night I watched a DVD of the Monterey Pop Music Festival. I couldn't get over how GOOD LOOKING almost all of the girls were !!! (I'm now 67 years old). Ravi Shankar and his musicians did the last number on the DVD. After he finished, the crowd gave him an 8-minute standing ovation. That was the music I grew up with...
Of course California girls. I graduated H S the week before, Monterey pop festival from Chatsworth, in CA. Summer of love. 2 yrs later went to 3 day festival in Northridge at Devonshire Downs. A month or so before Woodstock. A lot of same groups.
I'm 70 all the girs back than were good looking. Fat as a way of life was yet to happen, Style was in. Will remember a teen dance 1967. The girl had gloves up to her elbows and a pill box hat. We knew each other only from that dance. we still often communicate guess were both hanging on to that moment
Brad, and to the others who read this. I am now also 67. Growing up in the San Francisco bay. I had seen it all. The music, the girls, the attitude, of the of the people was magical. It saddens me to know, that a moment in time I lived in, will never be repeated. I was very lucky to have lived in that time period. So the years roll by, and the music now is down right terrible. I have always believed that music video, should help promote the song. Now the videos are a separate entity. They compete for the best video. What is wrong with that comparison ? The song. The song is a backround, to beautiful women shaking their stuff. The song just seens to be the second priority. The music video is rubbish. Famous on to its self. In other words, the song should stand by itself. Sorry, off topic, but, this written. Back in the 60s, and the early 70s, a song stood on its own. How many people bought, it and liked it, was the measuring stick. Now??? It is a mystery to me. My thoughts on a Monday night. So to you all that have commented, I think you see what I also see. The music is almost gone, and what is left? A music video of pretty woman dancing in front of a camera. The song they are playing in the background, is suffering, or worse, people buy an album/CD just for the slick video. The music, be dammed. Dave in Sierra Vista Az

@@AMD1 Hi yes, my mother idol was Elvis. Your right, I did not like him much, As my mom liked Elvis. Santra, she did not like. She said he was a jerk, I saw what she said watching him on TV, he was a jerk. AHHH, now let tell you my moment of comming to terms: In 1975, I am in California driving down highway 101 just south of San Francisco heading north. I will never forget even the small details of what happened. The radio was on. I drove from Georgia to California. I was in the army, I was going to visit my dad in Windsor, California. I was going to S Korea in about 3 weeks. So while on the road, it was set to AM radio. I was listening to that while crossing the the country. The news comes on. They said that Elvis Presley had died. I did not think much about it. Right after the the DJ was talking about Elvis. Than he puts on this Elvis song I never heard of. He puts on, The Ghetto. I did not change the channel, like normal, I listened to that song start to finish. I lost it, I had to turn off 101 to the SFO exit. Than I pulled off the road, and cried my eyes out. I could not belive the sexey snake, Elvis, ever sung a song like that.... So yes, I love the music I was brought up on. But, even I a hard core rock and Roller likes some of my moms songs, and Tony Bennett, and even Elvis, especially The Ghetto. So I learned the hard way, not to dismiss my mom's generation of songs, I just like mine better. As for Elvis, The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds and even others. I admit I like. This is about Monterey Pop and the music I love. You asked me a question I could not slide a slick answer to you. I think you wanted my truth to the question you asked. I hope you got my answer. The answer may not be right or wrong, but it is honest, from my heart. And all typed, or tapped out on my phone, that is how bad I wanted to answer you. I have a lot of comments here under Monterey Pop. Please read them. Dave in Sierra Vista Az.
I miss lsd, I use to experiment alot with it back then and had alot of great times with my lady friends doing well stuff on it..you can just use your imagination haha but the music played a major role on it and influenced a Multi Generation movement of stopping the hate and spreading peace and love and I was glad to be a part of it. Cheers Fellas ✌
The Animals were one of the most underrated bands of the 60's. Eric Burdon was a genius who had so many fabulous songs like this one & yet hardly gets mentioned when they talk about the great bands of the 60's. It's a shame that this great song hardly gets played on the radio.
Well, actually, they were very well known and well recognized. I entered my teens in the 1960's and we heard them all the time. Maybe in retrospect they are less well-known than the Beatles and the Stones but that is how media works. You also wouldnt know that Traffic existed if you watch rock documentaries.
@@granthurlburt4062 I'd like to agree with you, but I don't think many people know who the Animals were, especially the younger set. They're just not mentioned as obviously the Beatles & the Stones, but not even as the Zombies, the Hollies, the Yardbirds, the Kinks, Herman's Hermits......etc. I just don't think that they were as mainstream as these other bands because of their rather deep lyrics as in this song. Of course, this is just my humble opinion.

Love, love, love this magical song. Always did, always will. There was an enormous variety of music back in the day - and all of it so good. There wasn't one type - so many and you'd have favorites in so many areas. When they say nowadays "the soundtrack of our lives" - I just remember how music keeps us going! Rock on!
Incredible... Eric Burton brought others he surrounded himself with to his level. Van Morrison, Jackson Browne etc, these guys are true musical legions.

Such a great song… still sends tingles down my spine to this day! Of all the legendary pop festivals, this was the one I’d have loved to have seen. I visited the Fairgrounds site on a road trip about four years ago & was thrilled to see it almost unchanged from how it was in 1967. I got onto the stage & definitely ‘had a moment’ remembering all the rock / pop & soul legends who had performed in that exact same spot!

81 and still rockin!
I was born in 1968. Missed all of the 60’s😞. But my parents lived through the 60’s & I envy that!!
Now, you cant tell the women from the tattoos.

We didn t realize it then but growing up in the 60s and 70s was magical. All the talented groups, singers, and writers. What passes for talent and music these days is a joke.
We should go easy on the young ones....It's not their fault they missed The Renaissance we experienced...
@@oakvue45 Maybe so. Did they even try and open their ears and here what thel older generation grew up on? I think not. Were they forced by the entertainment industry to listen to the crap coming over the radio waves? Did they stand up for themselves? No. Your right, they themselves, may have been trapped in the stuff that they are playing. We the older generation, should have them listen to some of our music. Maybe, that would sway some of them to some of our songs. So to you all, silver dreams.

@@davidewing5605 Your parents generation were saying the same thing about your psychedelic music during the 1960s. It wasn't the classical, or jazz that they grew up with. Maybe they should have had you listen to their music. Maybe, that would sway some of your generation to their songs.
RIGHT.
I feel blessed I was a teenager in the 60s, this song more or less sums up
That era
You can say that again!!

I could just image what listening to the radio in the sixties would have been like, my god, every day a new incredibly hit masterpiece!
It was magical although we did not realize this at the time. There were so much good music! I had hundreds of albums.
FM radio didn’t even start until the late 60s. AM got it done though 👍🏼.
Not old enought to by records and the radio in Sweden have one hour on saturday...with "popmusik" early sixties was like....stoneage

The Animals were one of the most underrated bands of the 60's.
Eric Burdon was a genius who had so many fabulous songs like this one & yet hardly gets mentioned when they talk about the great bands of the 60's.
It's a shame that this great song hardly gets played on the radio.
No they weren’t. They were very credible with the industry and non industry liking them. Dumb statement
That “word” again…🙃

Just reliving some of my favorite groups of the 60's and none are better than the Animals with Eric Burton. Theynhad so many songs and each with as much feeling as the next. To bad there is nothing like them today for the young people, they missed out.....God Bless !D
Another great classic song by the Animals. I'm 74 and still listening to the Animals songs. I remember when this song first aired. 😃
That time people were pretty cool. Today no one is cool. They pretend that they are, but they are not! I miss the good old days with good music.

Love that wicked bass line.......
I'm a year late for commenting but yeah, that bass is absolutely wicked and it's a shame that all most people hear is Eric Burdon and Ravi Shankar...but that's understandable I guess lol. My #1 bass performance is from Jack Bruce on the Crossroads track from the "Wheels of Fire" album, that performance is an absolute masterpiece. If you've never listened to the song put it on, crank it up, and listen to a master bass player at his finest. Peace
@@ricko2486 Jack was a legend, I remember reading that Ginger Baker, fired him from Cream, but he would show up at every gig anyway, he finally got the job. If you want to hear a wicked bass line, try Heaven and Hell, with Ronnie James Dio, BLACK SABBATH, Live HQ......or "PLEASUREDOME" LIVE, by Frankie goes o Hollywood, kind of GLAMROCK, but what a bass line....
Danny McCullough on bass.
