@@Glock-bj3nz Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe have both confirmed in interviews how that slap was originally unscripted and that Reese was so overcome with emotion that she slapped Ryan and Ryan was shocked so they kept it for the rest of the takes
yea like they said, hes lying through his teeth in this scene. In reality this was the hardest acting these actors had to do in the movie because at the time they were living together, and were madly in love yet had to play a scene where they break up. the slap wasn't scripted, she got caught up in the emotion, and they basically had breakdowns from having to do this. Ryan even got sick to his stomach he got so worked up filming this.
Yeah, they met while filming this movie. Talking about irony. But it added the emotion necessary to this scene (even though it lacks the cruelty of the famous "Beyond my control" scene in Frears's movie).
True...but in the film and in the original story it was based on (Les Liaisons Dangereuses/Dangerous Liaisons), he treasured his ego and his pride at least a bit more than her. If it had not been so, he probably would have been able to endure the mockery of Kathryn/The Marquise De Merteuil...but he simply couldn't stand the idea of losing control, losing his bet, and losing Kathryn/The Marquise.
This is one of the best movies ever made, the performances are ideal and the writing is believable. The first time I saw this scene, I almost cried! I love this masterpiece of a romantic drama and succeeds in every aspect.
I thought this scene was sad because he is lying through his teeth to Annette because he is afraid that Kathryn will ruin her reputation out of spite! She probably would have done it too!
Given that Ryan and Reese were deep in a relationship at the time this was a super difficult scene for them. Ryan admitted he threw up immediately after the scene finished.
Never seen this movie before but I feel like based on his facial expression after he told her that, she shouldn't have entirely believed what he said. Or maybe that's just the beauty of Ryan Philippe's face...
This is one of the best movies of all time and the fact that they were together after this movie just makes all the emotions in this scene feel so real.
Why does everyone always break up with Reese Witherspoon in movies. First Sebastian to Annette, Patrick to Evelyn (American Psycho), and then Warner to Elle (Legally Blonde).
Watch their interviews. The emotions in this scene and their tears are very real !!! Ryan said it broke his heart to say such things to Reese ... and Reese said she almost screamed his name instead of Sebastian bcuz the scene and feelings felt so real.
as far as 90s teen dramas went.... probably one of the best made ones. maybe the best acting and use of music of any of them. pretty much set the standard for later dramas like Gossip Girl, Baby, and Elite. (I know it's barely a 90s flick but kinda falls into that period around 1995-2003 where teen flicks, boy bands, etc were way more huge than they are today.)
The slap and the tears weren't meant to happen, that was all in the heat of the moment, feeling too personal for them. The director kept pushing for "more realism, more more!" Ryan said he was having an (evident) panic attack, and having to say, "you mean nothing to me" so coldly KILLED HIM. After, Ryan broke character and tried to go forward and comfort his wife for what he was forced to do, but she was still stuck between reality and work in her head and went off script and yelled and yanked and accidentally slapped him hard because she couldn't separate work from reality, she wasn't even supposed to yell at him like that, and you can see how stunned Ryan was after that slap, and hurt, both of them. 😭 The director decided to keep the shot because, not only was it beyond expectation, but it really portrayed their character's dilemmas, so it was a "win-win". After they finally wrapped, Ryan bailed and he was getting sick on the side of the set, and Reese collapsed on the set and bawled so heavily and also felt such guilt for hurting her husband that they had to have the medic on set give her a breathing treatment. Then the director pulled them aside and tried to get them out of their heads and realize it was just a script. I couldn't imagine having to work against my real life partner and having to be so cruel and hurtful toward them and not feel pained. Such incredible, REAL performances. And let me say it because it needs to be said: Ryan is completely underrated as an actor, he truly is. Their divorce benefited her and ruined his career opportunities, it's just a fact. Yes, he cheated, but that has nothing to do with his work life. Shame people looked the other way about him after. And a part of me wishes they would have worked out IRL bc come on, their chemistry is amazing.
i can’t believe i knew none of this????? this has always been one of my all time favorite movies til this day and i always thought they had amazing chemistry
I can see them being one of those couples to have a second chance/marriage. First time he ever thought about someone other than himself, first time he ever considered how someone else might feel - still not convinced afterwards that he was upset by it all because of how the whole game he and Kathryn played made her feel or because of how he was feeling, re that bit in a Jane Austen novel "it was selfishness that led him to sport with your affection in the first place.....at present, he regrets what he has done, and why? because it has not answered to him, it has not made him happy." just saying I know he genuinely love her, but what apart from this has he done to demonstrate a concern for her feelings?
Knowing that they were dating and living together at that time, playing characters who are breaking off must have been extremely hard. I think Ryan told during an interview how hard it was to do that scene.
The fact that they were together in real life and their emotions were genuine through their acting… director yells cut and Ryan runs off set and vomits. Reese cried uncontrollably for minutes after the scene ended… they truly loved one another.

Reece and Ryan were partners at the time. With the unscripted slap, the scene was too emotionally draining on Ryan that it made him sick
