  • While I’m trying to translate the spell book I found in my previous video
    • Witch spell book found... , let’s take a short wander around an abandoned historic village located in eastern Pennsylvania.
Founded in 1854, historical Eckley town (also known as Eckley Miner’s Village) is an example of planned 19th century coal mining settlements.
Eckley is one among hundreds of company-owned mining towns that cropped up across Northeastern Pennsylvania’s coal fields throughout the 19th century. Built cheaply and designed to enforce strict industrial discipline, company towns like Eckley can speak to the almost unchecked power of the coal companies. But they also reflect the ways that worker’s families challenged company control and created small areas of independence and opportunity in an otherwise unrelenting environment.
The abandoned Eckley town was used as a location for The Molly Maguires, a historical drama film (1970). Partly inspired by a true story, this social drama tells the story of an undercover detective sent to a coal mining community to expose a secret society of Irish-American miners battling exploitation at the hand of the mine owners.
The town was so unchanged from its 19th century appearance that the only major alterations needed for filming were to hide TV antennas and lay underground electric wiring. A wooden coal breaker which was built as a prop and is featured extensively in the film. Now it’s abandoned, but partially stands to this day. The movie resulted in the abandoned town was saved from demolition. It was afterward converted into Eckley Miners’ Village museum (Eckley Ghost Town).

That's great video and a haunting soundtrack. To the Irish fleeing famine conditions in their homeland a place like Eckley would have offered the chance of a way out.

Thank you! Probably, yes, but anyway life in this village didn't look very attractive. The hard job, poor living conditions

Beautifully done! A perfect blend of footage, non-intrusive explanatory text, and music. I didn't know this place existed and have added to my list of places to explore.

Thanks, Johny! Check the days when the church and some houses are open to make some interior shots! When i was there, those buildings were closed however i had a chance to come over the gift shop. Plenty of pretty things)

Beautiful! I can daydream while watching this video thinking of how it was when the mine was working with all the people going about their day. Any idea where the mine was located?

      Hi William!
Right behind the village. I saw heavy machinery working there when was looking for the old miners' cemetery.

@@walkingcam1 Stupid me! I just Google Earthed it. God only knows where the original mine is or was. Looks like they are and have been surface mining all around the village for quite some time. I see the cemetery is in the middle of a mined area. Such is life in mine areas today.

Yeah. I planned to visit the cemetery too, but when reached the hill in the center of mine area ( 40°59'25.85"N 75°51'44.48"W), saw tractors working over there. Looked like guests were not welcome and i got back.

@@walkingcam1 It was good you got out. Without knowledge of a possible agreement in regard to visiting the graveyard you may have found yourself in a bit of a snag. It would have been cool to see.

там неподалеку должно быть шахтерское кладбище.
эти шахтёрские городишки (посёлки) тогда больше походили на гетто с рабами.
