  • Why I Love Low D Harmonica for Celtic Fiddle Tunes
    Low D is a great harmonica for playing Celtic music in the keys of D and Em. Low D has an essential place in my harmonica collection. In this video I talk about why low D is so good for fiddle tunes and review some of the harmonicas I own.
    Harmonica for the Soul is the channel of Nick Jackman, a harmonica player, multi-instrumentalist and one-man-band from New Zealand. Subscribe to this channel if you play harmonica and want to learn about American folk, blues and roots, traditional Irish and Scottish folk, tongue-blocking techniques, or how to play guitar and “hands-free” neck rack harmonica together.

    Especially the low harps

    Celtic music is beautiful, particularly when played with Low D whistle. So LD harp makes perfect sense👍

    Can get a paddy richter tuned low D. It's good for Ashoken farewell. I use a Seydel solo tuned low D which pitches nicely in the fiddle range. I'm a lip purser and I like Seydel harmonicas

    I recently got a Hohner Rocket Progressive Low D as I already had Rocket Amps. I agree it's a really good harmonica. It's a pity Hohner don't seem to do any Paddy Richter tuning.

    I recently got a Seydel Blues Session low d and it has become one of my favorites. It's inexpensive but has beautiful tone and nice rounded edges. It doesn't bend easily but I find myself picking it up a lot playing minor and pentatonic sounds great in second position on the low end.

    • @HarmonicaForTheSoul
      @HarmonicaForTheSoul  Рік тому +1

      Nice. Low D is really hard to bend, especially around holes 1 and 2. I'd assume the steel reeds in the Seydel Session may even make it more difficult. I like those harps too for the reasons you mention.

    I also got a dabell noble low d, it’s the black sheep in my hohner kit but is really nice and nearly half the price of premium hohners. 1 reed rattles against the cover plate though.

    I really find your videos entertaining and informative, thanks! I just received a Lee Oscar Low D as a gift, having come back from a long break from mostly blues based Harmonica playing, but with a new interest in folk and traditional music... Lee Oskars are a solid choice and mellow nicely over time rather than getting dull as other brass reeds might tend to… I do tend to tune them closer to just intonation though, although for playing single note melodies as I intend to with the low D this might not be so desirable… Happy Christmas!..

    My favorite tunes are Irish fiddle tunes. I agree with you , Low D is best. I happen to use Hohner XB 40 Low D which IMHO is the best. I know you can't get them anymore which is why I learned to do repairs. If any one fan get a hold of The XB 40 Low D they should get one , very loud great tone

      Certainly try paddy richter if you haven't already. I don't think it has to be an either/or situation. Mostly I play the tunes on low D but sometimes they're better on paddy richter.

    I love my D, E & F Hohner Rocket Lows. I have a low C Hohner Thunderbird too. I actually prefer the sound of my Hohner Rockets over the Thunderbird. There's just something about the brightness of the low C Thunderbird that isn't my favorite. I still play it quite a bit though. Thanks for you videos. Sounding rockin' on Fisher's Hornpipe!

    I have the Low C in an Oskar because it was more affordable than the Hohner special 20. I do like the Oskars but I find the sydels hard to get my mouth around use it more for tongue blocking. But if I have a low C or D but the key says C or G does it make it sound much different. But great video as always

    I do like Lee Oskar harps, I also like Da Bell harps, they are of the same quality as Oskars. Suzuki makes a great harp, the Manji that plays very well. The Suzuki Harpmaster is a good quality harp like the Oskars, it uses the same reed plates as the more expensive Manji.

    • @HarmonicaForTheSoul
      @HarmonicaForTheSoul  Рік тому

      Thanks I'll have to try some of these. I did try Manji. It does play well but it was all out of tune. I don't think the quality control is consistent.

    • @buddymc
      @buddymc Рік тому

      @@HarmonicaForTheSoul I did get a Manji C that didn't play well. I still prefer Oskars and Da Bells. Eastop is a good beginner harp that has a nice 'blues' grind to it.

    @francesnergui7855 7 місяців тому

    Great idea. Would you recommend Low D for a beginner ? I have seen that you seem to play the Easttop on some other videos. Would you recommend this cheap 008 harp for Low D ? Perhaps in Paddy Low D ? The nice thing with Easttop is that, when ordering from the factory store, they can do any customized tuning at no extra cost.

    • @HarmonicaForTheSoul
      @HarmonicaForTheSoul  7 місяців тому

      I don't think it matters what key you play as a beginner but maybe try a few keys and not just a low D. Be aware that low D takes a little bit more effort to play the big low reeds and it's harder to produce bends on a low tuned harp. If you want to play fiddle tunes I recommend having one. I haven't played Easttop so can't give an opinion. I think you just have to try stuff out to see if you like it. If it's cheap but has good reviews, probably worth a try.

    I find the low d harder to play.
    I bought a Suzuki Manji and I changed the cover plates as they were deeper at the bass end.
    It requires more air and I find it slow for jigs and feels.
    Perhaps my technique could be better.
    I use lip pursing.
    Great video

    • @HarmonicaForTheSoul
      @HarmonicaForTheSoul  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes a lot of people find them harder to play. I guess it takes more air to play the larger reeds.

  • @francesnergui7855
    @francesnergui7855 7 місяців тому

    Thank you. I already have 4 Easttop 008K model in various colors and keys. I just love their designs. I am not bending yet but they usually get good reviews on UA-cam and the Easttop Factory is very open to special orders; From what I get, you don't need bending to play Celtic Music, just single straight notes and fast movement. Is that right ? Actually I love old mariner(s songs which seem same style as Irish music...

    • @HarmonicaForTheSoul
      @HarmonicaForTheSoul  6 місяців тому

      Bending can always come in handy but I don't think it's absolutely necessary for Celtic music if you have the right harmonicas.

      I think it takes a bit more effort to make the larger reeds vibrate. I have read that our ears are less sensitive to lower frequencies so it appears quieter.
