    Keep the Atmos content coming as far as I’m concerned! But it would be good if you linked the David Stagl article in the video description as well, for a more in depth explanation of this loophole. For some systems there might be extra steps that need to be taken for the method to work properly.

    I found that if you start the playlist with the red play block in the very top of the playlist, it will in fact play it in Atmos. If you try clicking any one of the individual tracks, then it defaults back to stereo like described in the video, however, if you start the playlist, then click the FF button at the top' and skip through the songs one at a time, whatever song you stop on will play in Atmos, as shown by the Dolby logo displayed in the track description window. Saved me a little time listening through tracks I want to hear without hunting them down through the respective artist page.
    Hoping someday that Apple will iron out some of the bugs in the player, sooner than later.
    I spent the better part of 2 months deep diving into Apple Music once I figured out how to get it though all my 7.1.4 speakers in my studio, of course Rocket Man and Hans Zimmer Dune were notables for me, appreciate the other suggestions as I hadn't heard them yet.
    Love the channel, keep up the good work!

    I don’t agree with those unsubbing, this is a very valid format. How it evolves is really a question mark though. You can use headphones and I do, I can’t afford to add much to my Amphions at the moment. I think the dynamic range is confusing listeners a bit, they are used to that in the face squeeze that is more apparent in standard stereo. Let’s see where it goes, I still feel I’m missing out a lot without the true multi speaker experience, and the bigger hurdle is how this will continue to translate onto the small portables. I’ve had fun in Logic on just headphones though - but what would your focus be on now? Mix in Dolby Atmos on headphones, send to a mastering engineer specialising in Atmos, or continue to learn standard stereo?

    • @FLH3official
      @FLH3official 2 роки тому +2

      Good question. Like you I tried some atmos mixes in Logic, with headphones, and well the only results I got was bad mixes, hollow mixes, and I've never located the "3D objects" precisely without seeing them on the screen.
      I suspect I'm not enough receptive to the psycho side of the binaural psycho-acoustic effect, as soon as I close my eyes the little noise I've carefuly programed to fly up above my right ear is... just on the right.
      The only thing which reassures me is that Bob Clearmountain seems to suffers of such problem (he said that in a recent interview about his new atmos studio). I guess this is the only common point I have with this legend 😀

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  2 роки тому +3

      Some people are more responsive to binarual in headphones than others - it doesn't work equally for everyone. Also, make sure you back up and update your operating system (and Logic) regulalry, as the binaural render is improving all the time

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  2 роки тому +3

      That's very much a personal choice. For us, as a business, we'll be moving very much into immersive audio (whilst not leaving stereo behind, of course) as I think (and hope) it really is the future

    • @beckisagod
      @beckisagod 2 роки тому +1

      Regarding translation to portables: try to go to a local AV store that has a dedicated listening room and they’ll probably have some Atmos soundbars to demo there. Or if you can get an Amazon Echo Studio(~200€). Listening to Atmos mixes on these devices really convinced me that while of course the full x.y.z dedicated speaker layout is a special experience, those consumer systems really give a great experience as well. Switching from Atmos to a stereo mix with those is almost as big of a jump as switching from stereo to mono, they really fill the room and create immersion. So I really felt that it will be noticable experience for consumers as well.
      Regarding binaural translation: as mentioned, there’s constant improvement to the binaural algorithms as well going on. But like you know, not all people get the binaural effect in the same way. It uses something called the Head Related Transfer Function to create pshychoacoustic effects that mimic the ways our brain localises sound due to the shape of our heads, ears, distance of ears from shoulders etc. Currently there’s a one-size-fits-all solution that works better for some than others. But companies are working on bespoke solutions, for example Dolby is implementing an option where you can use Face ID to take a picture of your ears and it’ll create a custom HRTF based on you ear shape, that should make binaura a more immersive experience. This is bound to only become easier and better as the tech matures..

    1 thing about atmos i dont like is the files and requirements are very large compared to stereo therefore i dont see this coming out in physical form thats collectible like vinyl or cd was. more importantly this could mean the only way to consume new music will be through online subscription platforms. that puts a lot more control back into the hands of the labels that artists have been gaining lately.

    Having a hard time getting bitstream out of the mac. Any suggestions?
    Goal:
    - Sound Processor Marantz to play Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 for movies and music on my 2023 Mac (works great on the Apple TV but not the Mac)
    Current setup:
    - 2023 MacBook Pro HDMI 2.1 out to
    - LG TV C9 HDMI 2.1 out to
    - Marantz 7706 HDMI eARC port (works great with Apple TV in Atmos)
    - Source = Apple Music and the Movie Avatar are both are visually sending out Dolby Atmos signals from the respective apps
    Problem
    - Mac Midi is only allowing me up to 8 channels and I have a 7.1.4 system
    Troubleshooting
    - LG TV is set to Passthrough, eARC just as Atmos works when I have the Apple TV in rather than the Mac
    - Mac Midi configuration only allows up to 7.1 multi channel or 5.1.2 Atmos however even when Atmos is selected the Marantz stays on Multi Ch In 7.1
    - Apple support said whatever signal capability that is coming from the Marantz is what will show up.
    - I have plugged the Mac directly into the 8k port via HDMI in the Marantz (bypassing the LG) to see if it would allow me the Atmos option and nothing changed.
    - Marantz HDMI control both on and off
    - Marantz latest firmware, and mac latest firmware updated

    How big of a room is needed? Or do the speakers just need to be (close to) equal distance? For instance, center speaker will be farther back than front sides to maintain a spherical pattern - will a smaller room work as long as equal distance spherical placement is met?

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  2 роки тому +1

      It should work in a smaller room as long as the speakers are an equal distance from your head and the speakers all have the same tonality

    • @beckisagod
      @beckisagod 2 роки тому

      3m wide, 3,5m length, 2,4m height (all distances to speaker cones) is the minimum recommendation by Dolby. But for sure there’s smaller rooms out there. Yes the center speaker is usually slightly further to the back wall, due to the required angles of the other speakers. There’s two recommended layouts: one is spherical with speakers ideally equidistant from the listening position; the other is orthogonal, where the room is longer and there is a bigger distance between the front channels and surround channels. But even if you don’t have room for perfect equidistant placement, you can calibrate and time-delay your speakers(within reason) so that the system is still reference-worthy.

    • @dougleydorite

    Is Atmos more convincing than 3D movies? I find the illusion of depth is temporary. I stop noticing very quickly. And when I had a (actually) good 5.2 surround system, I never noticed the side and rear speakers. So I got bored and upgraded to stereo with Genelec monitors, in the name of quality over quantity.

      It's very different for music. I (Mark) personally find surround in movies irritating and distracting, but James loves it! So horses for courses. I’m still confused about the Atmos renderer. Quad, Pro Logic, 5.1, etc. all had sound improvements over stereo and a niche audiophile fanbase, but for music they all failed to clear the hurdle of the 2 channel consumer standard. Summing to stereo at playback is great for compatibility, but how does that result in “better mixes” as claimed in your last video? Are you sure it’s not just mixing for dynamics, ignoring the loudness wars, getting out of your comfort zone, feeling creatively liberated, etc. that’s resulting in better mixes? Anything that comes out of a headphone jack is 2 channel audio, so my question is what does Atmos do for 2-channel that couldn’t be achieved with stereo mixing?

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  2 роки тому +1

      That’s exactly what it is - and this was mentioned in the video released on Tuesday this week. It’s more dynamic, restricted loudness and being able to extend your creativity endlessly. That’s what makes it good

    • @florianangerer5121

      Regarding stereo fold downs: How well Atmos folds down to stereo depends a bit on how you are mixing. The thing that's new about Atmos is that, in addition to typical multichannel surround sound, it also supports audio objects, which are basically mono channels with positional metadata, that tells the renderer where to pan the signal on a given speaker system. This makes Atmos a bit more scalable than previous surround formats.
      As for headphones: While headphones only receive two channels, you are feeding each of these channels to one ear directly, whereas you can hear both channels with both ears over loudspeakers. Timing, level and spectral differences between the signals received by our ears allow us to hear a three-dimensional sound field, and, because we can feed each ear it's own signal over headphones, we can trick our brain into perceiving 3d audio. Dummy head recordings work that way, but they don't sound that great over speakers. So modern formats like Atmos try to overcome this by being able to render for speakers, and also create a binaural experience over headphones.

    • @goldcoast8872
      @goldcoast8872 2 роки тому

      @@florianangerer5121 Interesting. So for stereo, you no longer have to choose between LCR for better separation at the expense of the headphone listener. I’m still skeptical of full Atmos mixing becoming the norm - the cost is prohibitive, and surround has failed many times before. But enhanced stereo and an end to the loudness wars would be welcome change.

    • @florianangerer5121
      @florianangerer5121 2 роки тому +2

      @@goldcoast8872 Yes, exactly. It's worth noting, though, that Atmos is not the only system capable of this. In principle you can do pretty much everything it does, including scalable speaker experiences and binaural rendering, for free, even without ever using a single object. For starters, any multichannel audio can be binauralized. The simplest way is to measure impulses of speaker (or object) positions with a dummy head, and then convolve the signals you want to binauralize with those. How well this works depends, among other things, on how close the dummy head matches the listeners own head and ear shapes.
      As for speakers: Object-based audio certainly gives you a lot of flexibility, and there are some things you can only do by transmitting your mix as individual objects, most of them have to do with interactivity. However, if you are only concerned with spatializing your mix over different loudspeaker setups, you might not need objects at all. It's a bit different in terms of spatialization method, but Higher Order Ambisonics (depending on order and decoder type) does this very well. Outside of VR and 360° videography HOA hasn't seen mainstream success (yet), but it has its advantages over using objects (for linear workflows). The main one for music is perhaps, that in contrast with things like Atmos, you can still group tracks together, and, while you sometimes need dedicated plugins that can deal with HOA, sends and inserts work the same way you are used to from stereo.

      Atmos-capable receivers will successfully fold down the Atmos mixes to any common home cinema setups like 5.1, 7.1, 5.1.2, etc. There’s loads of Atmos soundbars that are on the market that can give quite an immersive experience(by bouncing sound off the walls and ceilings of a room)compared to traditional stereo; there’s the Amazon Echo Studio smart speaker that is probably the first of many such products and I have found it quite amazing, what that little thing has to offer in terms of immersive sound. Newer cars are outfitted with Atmos sound systems. I’ve heard of tech in development in the vein of Internet of Things, that’ll group all your home speakers together - everything from your phone to tv to bluetooth speakers - and feed immersive audio through them. So while there’s a bunch of options already out there, I believe the bulk of it is just beginning to be developed and put into the pipeline. But already the current ~200 million home cinema systems and a few billion other Atmos-capable consumer systems is a good starting place.

    This still doesn't work after 12.6 for most people. Iv'e been on with Apple dev team for the last week and they had no idea. Apparently they don't read forums at all and no zero clue Atmos was folded down to 5.1 when doing this in the OS. Since mostly us studio owners, or HIFI geeks with 7.1.4 or more monitoring setups, there are so few people willing to sit on with Apple support the issue wasn't even recognized. I spent some time as well with Dolby support and they just discovered this now in 2023 after all this Atmos news from Apple NO ONE KNEW! Crazy. The workaround may be using Loopback and sending your Mac system audio to Loopback, that will somehow trick Apple music to understand we have 7.1.4 (not 5.1) and decoded all 12 channels. Then loop the loopback output to your hardware IO outs and boom full 7.1.4 Atmos...... until Apple fixes their own issue they had no idea wasnt working.

    This doesn’t work! I just retried it to make sure and it definitely doesn’t.
    Apple Music says, Dolby Atmos when ‘auto is selected’ as described but it only outputs 5.1 Atmos.
    No rear or height channels.
    You’re right if Atmos is auto it’s just stereo but when set to always on, it says Atmos in Apple Music but only outputs 5.1.
    Mac OS has a spatial sound renderer not an Atmos renderer. Only Apple TV has the Atmos decoder/renderer.
    The marantz av7702mk2 I use has balanced xlr outputs and I just plug my Apple TV into the hdmi inputs of the marantz and listen to music that way, hdmi out of my pc nvidia gpu into marantz for Atmos movies and games,
    Usb cable from RME digiface usb into MacBook for Atmos music making in Logic and connect RME digiface usb over ADAT to ferrofish pulse 16 for controlling volume levels in the RME totalfx mix software.
    Balanced outputs of marantz to balanced inputs of ferrofish pulse 16 and balanced outputs of ferrofish into 14 Adam active monitors.
    Can also route inputs and outputs anywhere in totalfx mix.
    Commercial Atmos playback has to use hdmi for 7.1.4 setups, be it movies games or music, it’s a DRM thing, it’s the only way.
    A RME digiface and a Ferrofish pulse 16 is the most cost efficient way of getting a 7.1.4 Atmos setup using Logic.
    I’ve researched this to death……
    You also can’t go from the hdmi output of latest MacBooks into a pre pro receiver for Atmos as macOS uses the spatial audio decoder/renderer not the Atmos renderer.

      Are you using the latest OS? We are definitley getting 7.1.4, and there's even a dolby test track on Apple Music so as you can varify it (search Dolby Atmos Channel ID 7.1.4). We've researched this to death as well, but that's an ongoing thing... this is all changing day by day! And it ONLY works for us when Dolby Atmos is set to 'automatic' in Apple Music - if we set it to 'always on' we only get the Apple spatial mix through L & R speakers and that's it. Another point worth raising is that it's also only currently working for us with an interface with the required number of sockets on the back. ADAT and aggregate devices seem very hit and miss.

      @@PresentDayProduction I am using adat to connect the pulse 16 and digiface usb. I don’t see how that would make any difference though to be fair.
      I’m using latest max OS on a m1Max 16”.
      Maybe it’s that but when I spoke to apple support on the phone and over on the Dolby Atmos forums I was told that it was a limitation of windows and MacOS in order to be dhcp compliant due to DRM.
      You can see from the video I made (and linked to in previous post) it’s not working for me.
      I have a feeling if it is working, it’ll more than likely be a bug that is patched out.
      There’s a great video explaining why on UA-cam…..’mixing in Dolby Atmos….how it works’ go to 35:42 and it explains why it ‘shouldn’t’ work.
      Have you definitely checked the mixer outputs? (Sorry for patronising question)
      Love the channel by the way.
      Also look into mastering in Dolby Atmos by doing a mono bounce and using that as a side chain input for limiters on every audio output. They were discussing it on mix with the masters.

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  2 роки тому

      All I can tell you is it’s buggy as hell at the moment - in Logic I’ve got two speakers plugged into physical outputs 9 and 10 patched as 13 and 14, and in audio/MIDI they’re patched as something else! Early days…. but nobody I’ve spoken to running ADAT or an aggregate device has had it working in any more than 5.1. All I can tell you is we need an interface with 16 line outputs on XLR and really good converters that are always 1-1. No virtual cue mixes, no reassignable anything - just output 1 ALWAYS being output 1, and output 14 ALWAYS being output 14! And not even a damn headphone socket!

    • @beckisagod
      @beckisagod 2 роки тому

      @@michaelmyler9957 it does work but it depends on your setup. This is not officially supported by Apple so that’s why your mileage might vary.. It would be good if the video description included the link to the original article as well, as it contains some more in depth info about this loophole. What the OS/Apple Music wants to see is 16 digital outputs, so that’s why your system might not work if you only follow the instructions in the video here. Try it out like this: get Blackhole 16ch(freeware), choose it as the input device in Macs Audio/Midi settings, make a template in Logic with Blackhole 16ch as the input and your interface as the output, choose your interface as the output device in Macs Audio/Midi setup. You can make tracks for the inputs in Logic to be able to verify you are getting the correct info on all channels.

    See, that’s just a problem though if you ask me. In order to truly appreciate Atmos you need to have a full speaker set up. What are the chances of the modern consumer being convinced to go install set ups in their homes? 😂😂 it’s seriously laughable. Especially in the times of a GLOBAL RECESSION!! Sure you can listen to it on headphones and on a sound bar and all that stuff but it’s just a gimmick To really get it You need the speakers and people are just not going to invest in it. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a professional engineer and I am currently talking to my Sweetwater rep about an Atmos rig. I’m not inherently against Atmos. I’m just being put in this position because it’s my profession and I’ve already been asked for an Atmos mix. I’m doing it because I have to I do not think this is going to be the next big thing in music I just don’t. Not until at least the technology gets there in an affordable way that the average modern person can consume and appreciate Atmos.
