- Have you ever wonder what your last day as an engineer will be I take you on that journey as I decided to quit Structural Engineering after 16 years and filmed my last day as a Structural Engineer. What does it mean for this channel, and why I left Structural engineering? Being a consultant engineer is tough, but it is something I loved, and you and see many videos on why I love Structural Engineering; however, sometimes, there is a need for change and growth, and the next journey in my Engineering career will be exciting. I will not reveal much in this video, but the next journey isn't far from Structural Engineering, and I will take you on that journey.
My youtube channel on structural engineering isn't coming to an end; in fact, it is likely to have better, more exciting content. And I look forward to taking you on the journey.

I am currently in consultancy , how can I switch to structural engineering software design company . What is your journey for reaching to that . Please let us know
@@sohamtrivedi1312 fortunately sime of my passions outside of engineering lead me to get the opportunity to get an interview, plus I happened to have a good knowledge of the said software already, plus a little bit of luck. Do you have currently any unique experience that a software design company may want to utilise? If not, maybe keep an eye out for roles that they might be offering and aim to get experience in the requirements outlined in the job descriptions (i.e. certification in a programming language).
@@sohamtrivedi1312 I also changed from consultancy to engineering software 25 years ago. You will need to show both a passion for the product area plus relevant experience. What that experience is depends on what role you are looking for.
I started as a product manager, changed to sales and marketing, and am now customer service lead. In all cases I needed domain knowledge, technical excellence, and people skills.
If you want to develop the software itself then you need coding skills, preferably in the relevant language. VBA will not cut it, Python can be useful, but you will need something like C#, C++, or JavaScript (depending on the product).

I like math and physics and designing and creating new things but I hate endless meetings, dealing with the contractors, archiects and owners. Sometimes a projects goes through so many changes I forget the initial state of the project, my assumptions my design philosophy. It is a completely different animal than what you start with. You just try to make things work with minimal damage. It takes the joy out of your work.

I have 44 years (and still counting) as a Structural Engineer and have made similar changes starting with consulting, to large corporation, and back to consulting. I retired from a full time corporate environment at age 62 and returned to consulting because (like you) I enjoy the technical side of the work. I also have enjoyed teaching at a community college part time to share my knowledge and experiences. I could not have planned my career the way it turned out, but made changes that were appropriate and necessary to advance my skills and opportunities. Keep on adjusting your course as you see fit, and as the pilots sometimes say may you have blue skies and tail winds all the way. 😀

It is always intresting to see how engineers can have a varity of career parths and most are not as a straight line. sounds like you took the oppitunitys that opened to you something I wish I learned ealier is take risk and the opportunities that open you and you will go far.

Hi Brendan, this one was very close to home with me. I remembered taking that step to becoming a consultant when the company I worked with had a rough depression time. The project engineers had to take a 40 to 60% pay cut and yes I was one with the 60% cut. Though I decided to take servants pay my boss wanted me to say on for 2 additional months which I did. After the 2 months was over I went on into an unknown but exciting journey. It's almost 10 years and I haven't regret my decision. To this day, my exboss still seek my services for some assignment. With that being said, I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

I just quit my role as a graduate structural consultant!! I Will be working in a tier 1 construction company and Im super excited. While I enjoyed structural engineering, I know ill never be happy working a 9-5 in an office where career and salary progression is minimal.

@Muhammadnasir Abdulrazaq I have and totally agree too often engineering stick within their sand box but a building is holistic you need to look for solutions sometimes that are not the normal design and knowing everyone’s concern can make you find the best solutions.

Hi Mohib being new it will be hard for people to trust you, you will likely need to provide some cheap services to rpove your worth. you need to track the time things take, typically any jobs you take will be short term so you will want to riase your rate after getting your foot in the door. just remeber you are only as good as your last jobs.

Spotted the change on LinkedIn the other day, looks like an exciting change of applying your skillset! I can relate to your introduction a bit, similar dynamics lead me to consult. I returned part time recently to practice but am less focused on archirectural deliver and more on programming - a refreshing change. I think I have watched them all as your career path has mirrored mine - I have also recently quit with the aim to start something that will "do things better". As an aside - I think its interesting there are very few engineers in consultancy with more than 15 years experience (except directors) where do they all go?
Hi Peter, I think at some point alot of engineering move out of the inductry or start there own business, I had never through about that but it is true. I have seem some step out of the industry, others move to small companies and others start there own consultancy. good luck on your journey.

Was actually surprised to see this video just now; that is, after seeing your update from LinkedIn. I thought you'd just be juggling between your roles. But yeah, I completely understand. Once I saw the potential of tech development within our industry, it is indeed more exciting I suppose.
As I mentioned, I was just interviewed for a senior structural role (by your "previous" company, although not based in Melbourne). So to me, it seems like the other way around.

If not, what should I prepare to get a chance? I took my bachelor of civil engineering in Vietnam, so basically I'm familiar with structural engineering. Hi Tung, I started part time work prior in 2nd year you just need to find the right company. but it isnt easy as there isnt that many role around. being willing to keep learning, and if you get the oppitunity make good use for it. I reccomend all engineers if they can start working prior to graduation. hope you can find somewhere, you may need to take some structural engineering classes but engineering is the same all around the world.

I know some companies have to layoffs some their employees. Also, they have to do hiring freeze. Some of their employees has big regrets from changing the workplace from great resignation times. Now, we call them the great resignation to mass layoffs/forced resignation, or great resignation to big regrets, etc. You not only one dealing with new workplace.

Hey Brendan! I am a student from UniMelb and you did pop in recenetly but I unfortunately couldnt'nt make it to the event. I am currently studying Masters of Civil Engineering (no specialisation, though I can still change to structural). I have done a few structural design related subjects and looking back, I can say that I enjoyed studying them. However, my question is regarding what particular field of Civil engineering (i.e. structural, hydraulics, geotechnical, etc.) has the greatest prospects in melbourne? (On a side note: you certainly got me with the zoom call entry ding at the beginning btw hahaha)
Hi Adhi, thanks for the support and hopefuly you can make it next time I present. as for greater pospect most feild have good prospects with all the infrastructure work. you should try and find out which one you enjoy the most. but if I had to pick on I would choose Structural.

I enjoy your insights and videos, I needed this in my early career years.
Do you feel constrained about the topics you can talk about as your clients are government or larger corporations.
My background is Construction and Civil and Building, coal fired power station and power transmission lines and many other projects.
I have found that, in future power supply, that nuclear is a popular topic and obviously it is a huge business opportunity.
Many are delighted with the zero CO2 and the new technologies.
My concerns are real and unfortunately appear complex to many.
I believe that Engineers are either lost in the technology and love it, or do not want to appear to be controversial.
As many engineers are in a conservative business environment, do you agree.
I believe only Construction Engineers can properly explain the downside but there is no upside to their career and we all have/had mortgages etc.
Do you agree?
I like working from home; no interest in ever setting foot in an office again. That environment looked nauseating.

my dad is a civil and structural engineer. he just retired, in the the place where the chair that the receptionist used to sit is a life size poster of my dad holding up his middle finger with a cartoon balloon that says " F you, i said i'm retired" When he answers his phone he cheerfully says "Hi, i'm retired" and usually within less than a minute he says even more cheerfully "F you, i'm retired" I wonder if he means it this time.
Hi Dirtude I have found a lot of engineers finding it hard to retire I think we mostly enjoy it too much and dont know what to do with the free time.

@@BrendanHasty I also quit engineering consultancy 2yrs ago after doing 15yrs of structural engineering design. I just felt design was overrated and very reliant on software😅. I'm now in the asset integrity and management space in a heavy industry environment which I really "enjoy", a word that I rarely use during my consultancy days

Hi Brendan, what certifications are key to achieve (help in career growth) after completing bachelor's in Civil Engineering . E.g. I know PMP is one of them, what else would you recommend.

Hi Ali, it really depend where in the world you are. in Australia you need to get charted with engineering Austalia, tho I would reccomend gettting charted with IstructE. but for career Growth you need to work on comminication, the engineers with the best comminication/soft skills get promoted the fastest.
Im in LD at kimley-horn right now but want to transition to structural. I got a job offer from wsp in land development but i want to go into structural instead.
Hi Greg I would still reccomend them if you get the oppintunity to work there. The transistion can be hard, hope you can make the transition and enjoy the move.

@@BrendanHasty That sounds Interresting. The building industry can be quite traditional in some ways, especially the clients. Failure costs are still quite high in my experience with some projects due to this. Also smaller companies in the building industry still struggle to adopt BIM due to barrier to entry.

@@BrendanHasty that's awesome, I did my masters in structural engineering from UNSW Sydney, after that i came back to india coz it was so hard to find a job there. Also I felt homesick. I worked here in a local consultancy for more than 3 years and now I got an opportunity in wsp india. I will be joining soon. I am also going to my uni to have a chat with students from civil/structures . It's going to be amazing.
