My uncle used to have this laptop until he gave it to me. While I'm in the verge of upgrading my 2 laptops (already upgraded the DELL Latitude E6430) and 2 desktops, the DELL Inspiron 1525 will be the next one to upgrade, and to do that, I'll have to by 2x 2GB DDR2 SODIMM for it (as well as a 500GB Solid State Drive SATA and clone the hard drive to it).

If the ram sticks are compatible, sure you can get away with using a 2gb and a 1gb ram stick, total ram would be 3gb and performance would increase. Although I'd suggest just buying 2 2gb rams instead for better performance and removing the 1gb sticks. If they're not compatible i.e mismatched frequency, different brand etc. They will not work. Your pc will simply not boot. To check available ram slots, right click on the taskbar > Task manager > performance > memory. and it should be visible.

Dump the vista and go for the 64 bit windows 10. you will be surprised at the results . im running 3 gb ram but fixing to try 6 gb just to see if it makes a difference .
Aubrey Mckenzie Nope. That's a completely version of ram if the slots don't match. You may be trying to install DDR3 ram into a computer that only accepts DDR2.

i have 4gb ddr2 installed on my 1525 and i hear it can go up to 8gb... i wouldnt try it though bc it hasnt really been tested. BUT, people have safely achieved 6gb of ram with one slot filled with a 2gb module and the other one with a 4gb. if you wanna try it, make sure u get the right ram modules. and to use more than 3.5 gb of ram you need a 64 bit windows installation. hope i cleared that up a bit
I know so many computer geeks that would slap you up side your head for not grounding yourself before touching the memory. Anybody doing this if you don't ground your self by use of a ground strap or touching a metal object like a computer case or appliance (skin to metal) that's plugged up with a grounded power cord this will discharge static buildup. Any static build up on your body can fry circuits on the memory and kill the strip.

max acceptable ram is 4 gb or 8 gb.....my system is a core 2 duo processor, 32 bit architecture unlike the 64 bit machine you talk of

I did a bit of research on point and found out that 4 GB is what Dell recommends as a maximum. However, it may work with 6 but will NOT work with 8.
I understand that 4 gb is the max, but mine will not take more than 3gb!
