Great reaction. The Carpenters were a fantastic group. Richards arranging and songwriting was top notch As a singer I consider Karen to be one of the all time greats. Even if you aren't into this type of music it's easy recognize greatness when you hear it.

Good God! How can I thank you for this video? - I've been a Carpenters' fan almost all my life and you really had me tearing up with your reactions and comments all through the video. Without any doubts, Karen Carpenter was an incredible vocalist, and truly underrated. She had one of the most perfect voices in music history, along with miss Olivia Newton-John, Donna Summer and, of course, the legandary Whitney Houston. Thank you for this video!

This magnificent performance answers two of the most asked questions surrounding Karen, why did she have to out from behind her beloved drum kit and did she come to love being out front? Karen loved to sing to an audience and the audience loved her charm and talent! She was a divine star and here was where she belonged! RIP Drummergirl

There's a jazz medley duet she did with Miss Ella Fitzgerald in 1980 from what was to be (if I'm not mistaken) their last TV special called Music, Music, Music. It's BEAUTIFUL! I've never seen any channel react to it. You won't be sorry!!! Awesome reaction BTW! ❤

Oooh, yes. That duet with the legendary Ella Fitzgerald is phenomenal. She was Karen's idol as a child when she and big brother Richard used to sit and listen to their parents' records for hours a day. So sweet. And what a dream come true for them to grow up and have Ms. Fitzgerald guest star on their show. Karen, would some become a legend in her own time, too. I watch that duet quite often. It is beautiful!

Amazing that each person who was asked if Karen ever went off key replied no not even in rehearsal. They asked both Karen and Richard the same question and they both said no.So much emotion in Karen's voice no matter what she sang showed she never took a night off.The best voice my ears have ever heard.Thank You for doing this reaction to someone who deserves to be remembered forever!

It would be great if you reacted to the 1972 concert where they spent a full 13 minutes singing the music of Burt Bacharach. His songs are very intricate and complex and they did this with Karen on drums. It really showcases their versatility. This was great to watch.

I was lucky to see The Carpenters live which was my first ever concert. It was held at the Chevron Hilton, Kings Cross, Sydney, Australia, and it was a dinner/cabaret show, everyone was dressed to the hilt. They are a group that you never become tire of. A TV movie was made in 1989 The Karen Carpenter Story, which her brother Richard was one of two producers. The movie was from the beginning of Karen and Richard performing to when she passed. I appreciate how you show reaction videos compared to other channels, who stop start, make comment during the video. But also, you go and do research on the artist once you become acquainted with them. I Enjoy Your Channel

Pat! I never saw that; what a great experience. Everyone is doing the same Carpenters videos over and over. I don't even watch the "We've Only Just Begun" video because I'm tire of it...AND I LOVE THE CARPENTERS AND HAVE ALL THEIR ALBUMS. So this was a treat. And I noticed you've picked up on Karen's effortless and seemingly endless vibrato. Most singers sound worse live, but she's impeccable. Great get. Really enjoyed it. :)

As a 13 year old in 1970 it wasn't considered cool to listen to the Carpenters. As my music tastes grew during high school I could start to appreciate Karen's voice. With all the medical problems she endured, she never seemed to loose that beautiful voice. The only other artist I can think of that kept their voice through bad health is Elvis and I was lucky enough to experience both their careers.

A voice as recognizable today as it was during the time we all first listened to the amazing sound of the Carpenters. Sadly, in the start of this video you can see that the anorexia nervosa that ultimatley caused her early death already had a grip on her. She tragically left this world way too young, but their timeless music and beautiful sound lives on.

I think you do an incredible job in your reaction videos Pat! I like how you do the split screen and allow us to watch the performance all the way through without stopping and interupting every few minutes. We still get to see your very expressive reactions (so cute), quietly on the right side of the screen. I like that you wait until the end to make comments. Some reaction video persons have no idea what they're talking about, but I can tell you have done some research into the artists. I like your style and think you are one of the best reaction video commentators! I'm a HUGE Carpenters fan, and have been for many years. I'm thankful to you for highlighting so many of their videos. I absolutely love the one with Karen and Ella Fitzgerald! I'm the same age as Karen, and loved her beautiful voice and soul right from the start. Back in the height of their success, I sadly didn't recognize the genious of Richard (Karen's brother), but have since come to appreciate his tremendous contribution to their success. It's hard not to recognize Karen as the SUPERSTAR that she was though. Her voice is the BEST of all time, in my opinion, not only for her range and perfect pitch, but for the tonal quaility of her voice. It's truly unmatched and heaven sent! I miss her so much!

I’m just seeing this video of yours, Patrick. This is a hunk of the BBC concert. A worthy show to see in its entirety. One of two famous Karen drum exhibitions came from this, Lead Sister shirt. Tony Peluso on fuzz guitar. Richard created the sound and Tony executed the guitar solo for Goodbye To Love to become the first “Power Ballad.”
Cubby O’Brien on drums. He has a long history that is worth looking up on G. Yes as mentioned he was an original member of The Mickey Mouse Club (1950’s) where he was paired with his first Karen. He became their second non-Karen touring drummer and was there to the end.
I have a recommendation I’d like to make but I’m not sure you see old comments. So I’m going to the front and message under a recent video and hope you see it.
    Joe

Karen was an excellent drummer herself, in addition to her great voice. However, if I am not mistaken, the drummer featured in this video was Cubby O'Brien. Back in the 1950s, Cubby was one of the original Mouseketeers on the first (in black and white) version of the Mickey Mouse Club. I saw the Carpenters live in 1974, and Cubby was the drummer in their road band.

I do not if any others have told. That was Tony Peluso was the guitarist. The guitar solo is one of the classic solos of the time. The drummer was Cubby O’Brien. Cubby was one of the original Mousekateers. He often played the drums on the Mickey Mouse club. However, the only reason that Kobe O’Brien was the drummer, was because they wanted to get Karen out from behind the drums. I don’t know if anyone’s told you this, Karen was as good of a drummer is Cubby was. She was phenomenal. She also played the bass guitar. You are right in saying that she was supremely talented.

    Sacrilege alert! 😬
So, I am a die-hard Carpenters stan, but…I don’t love this recording. I have to break it down song by song, because my enjoyment of this performance waxes and wanes considerably throughout.
“Close To You” - Love the song, but I don’t love this performance. It lacks the plaintive sincerity of the album version.
“For All We Know” - So brief, but this is really good. This is a great Carpenter’s song in general.
“Top Of The World” - Nothing special about this performance, and this never was a favorite song of mine. I don’t like Karen’s sound here, it feels very theatrical, like singing through a forced smile.
“Ticket To Ride” - This is a decent version. Solid harmony.
“Only Yesterday” - I like the slowed down bit a lot, probably better than the album version.
“I Won’t Last A Day Without You” - Best so far. This is an underrated song in general.
“Hurting Each Other” - This arrangement is strange. Vocals are good.
“Superstar” - Nothing will ever match her original first-take recording. Every attempt to put a new spin on it just detracts from the simple beauty of the song. Her tone sounds really strange on the last syllable of ‘radio’ to me for some reason, though she is obviously perfectly on pitch as always.
“Rainy Days And Mondays” - Too perky overall. It just doesn’t match the mood of the lyrics.
“Goodbye To Love” - Still too perky for the subject matter of the song. The harmony at the end isn’t balanced in the final mix as well. I know this is a live performance, but still, I’m sure there was post production on this.
I mean, it’s a Carpenters performance, so it’s definitely good, but it’s just not as good as some of the stuff they did later for _Music, Music, Music._ And how could they omit “Yesterday Once More” from this medley? That is one of their all-time greats. They didn’t feature “We’ve Only Just Begun” either, which seems like a glaring omission as well. So yeah, it's a mixed bag for me.

I hear you. They had just hired a new guy in 1976 after letting their original dude go, and the new guy wanted them to shift their act to being more theatrical and "Vegas style". They played Vegas a lot in 76, 77, 78. It was mainly management changes that caused this. Richard and Karen both had grown unhappy with the way they were basically being overworked and touring all the time. Karen got very sick in '75 due to so much touring, traveling, & studio recording. It just wore her down. I prefer their earlier years, but not all the touring they did, and the label and management running them too hard. 😉
