Warp Text Into Shapes with Illustrator

In this tutorial I’ll be going over some of the ways in which you can warp text into different shapes using Adobe Illustrator CC. One of the things I really love about Illustrator is how easy it is to work with and transform text into different shapes.
Illustrator allows us to warp text in two different ways - predefined shapes and custom shapes.
The first way in which you can warp text into shapes with Illustrator is by using the make with warp feature. This allows you to transform your text into a series of different predetermined shapes.
If none of the shape presets in the warp options window provides you with your desired shape for your text, another way in which you can warp text into shapes with Illustrator is to create your own custom shape and use it as a reference for transforming your text.

I'd like to design the Envelope Mesh first (a waving flag), then drop a flat design on it (a flat version of a flag). Is this possible, perhaps by using the Symbol tool?

I tried to do this with a heart shape but I keep getting a message, “this requires a selection of multiple objects. The top object must be a single path or mesh, or symbol containing a single path or mesh”. Not sure what I’m doing wrong, Can you show how to do heart shape with text? Thank you!

Make sure you're text and shape are on the same layer. Put the heart shape on the top then try again :)
