- We drove back roads of Kansas. Here’s what we found: We drove down the back roads in the southeast corner of Kansas, got lost, and discovered some of this area’s best kept secrets!
About me: I grew up in a small town the Midwest. Now I drive America's backroads exploring small towns, forgotten places, local history and more!

Did some research on the Old Parita. It was built in 1934 and was an extremely popular dance hall and venue for gathering. The building is (as of last month) undergoing renovation with plans to reopen it to the public.
Nice work, thank you!
Having lived in Kansas for the past 43 years I have been very fortunate to visit dozens of wonderful things to see, to numerous to mention here. This is the entrance to the wild west, where the likes of Wild Bill Hickok worked as sheriff in Cowtowns, Wichita, Abilene, Elsworth, Caldwell and Dodge City. Helium was first discovered in Dexter in 1903. Wichita is the origin of so many airplane companies, Boeing, Steersman and Cessna. So many forts such as Ft. Hays where George Custer was stationed, Ft. Harker, Ft. Larnerd and Leavenworth not to mention Ft. Riley, home of the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division. Most recently in the news about Amelia Earhart who hails from Atchison. Kansas City, barbecue, jazz and the National WWI Museum. Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene and the Swedish Community in Lindsborg. A little know fact is that Route 66 passed through the town of Baxter Springs, where an obscure Civil War battle was fought against Black Soldiers. Too many interesting sites, towns and locations to list here.
That building was on American pickers.
@@BobHartung-xw7pr GREAT post and thanks for sharing, Bob! I LOVE Kansas and discovered it for the first time in 1982 thanks to the late Carl and Florence Westin from Mankato. Since then, I have traveled to the state many times on solo trips and with my parents who also LOVED it. (Both are deceased now but I know they still want me to visit the "Sunflower State.") I am a Kansas Explorer and have friends in several cities in the state. I have visited so many wonderful places and people there over the years and am looking forward to another Kansas visit in May. I once was considering a move to either Emporia or Manhattan but ended up in Albuquerque after being born and raised in San Jose, CA. and living there for almost 60 years. My dear friend in Peabody calls me "A Kansan In Heart." I still have NEVER met a native Kansan who has visited Mt. Sunflower which is one of my most favorite places to visit in the state along with the Cathedral of the Plains in Victoria. 😎
@@DougCeleste Thanks Doug, l moved to Kansas in '82 from Texas. This is my 5th state l have lived in, originally hailing from the east coast. I have found that travel magazines tend to promote major attractions in prominent cities with large budgets. I passed through Albuquerque last fall on the way to Arizona. The southwest is one of my favorite locations to visit. There are so many treasures in our own backyard. When l was a child it was $ 3.00 worth of gas and a picnic lunch to travel to dozens of wonderful sites and locations. All found prior to goggle and the internet. I am so grateful having had the opportunity.
I just moved to a small town in Kansas. I love it. It's a great state to get away from everything!
Kansas is a treasure that gets a bad rap. Please provide more Information, History and research to inform those who have never driven through the State.
If you were in Kansas, you should have slid your way into my state, Missouri.
Funny story- we attempted Missouri and failed due to poor planning on my part. I didn’t realize our favorite Missouri camping spot was shuttered temporarily (should have looked prior but didn’t think of it). When we got there, it was an oh 💩what do we do now situation. In the heat of the moment we decided to head to our next destination. Wawawaaaa 🎺 Next time!
Love your hats. Another fun adventure with you both. Thanks!
If you ever come through Ottawa kansas. We have the world’s oldest continuous operating theater, one of the largest antique tractor shows in Kansas and car shows in Kansas every year. And Lawrence Kansas is the birth place of the civil war with the first battle of the civil war being fought at the Battle of black jack out side of Baldwin city Kansas. Lawrence was burned to the ground by pro slavery forces which in cluded one if not both Jesse and Frank James
Thanks for sharing this interesting info. My parents and I were in Ottawa for the Kansas Sampler Festival around 2000 and we LOVED our visit there. What month has the car shows? Those sound neat along with the movie theater.
Hi, Sally. Thank you for your video. Have a great day.🎉.❤.
That is a good one Marty..allegedly. Thanks for the video 🐾
lol glad you enjoyed it Stu!
We did Kansas last year … we enjoyed it
You traded in your stormy kromer and Arctic fur hats for summer straw. Happy to see you on the road again. Stay safe.
It's been such a mild winter in Missouri, for the most part, I haven't put on my Stormy Kromer!
The sound of the ice cream man comin down the street. In my day (1960's) we all ran out of the house screaming "Ice cream man, Ice cream man!" He would stop (I don't think we had ice cream women yet :( and even my macrobiotic diet parents would buy us a bomb pop or drumstick. Interesting you guys know them as "The Candy Man". Love it but kinda creepy too. Love creepy anyway.
I live in Pittsburg, Kansas and I seen big Brutus at the end of the video. You're going to love that place. It is very awesome! Enjoy!💪🏾💯
Great video Sally and Marty. Greetings from Australia.
Hello there! Glad you enjoyed it, thank you.

Check him out Sally for some nice Aussie asmr scenery from the left side of the road!

Hello! Marty! 👍👍🤠
👋
Fantastic video
Love you guys! Thanks for sharing your travel points of interest. Happy trails to you!!! Thanks for sharing!
Come to SW Kansas next! All kinds of history here!
I'm from Kansas and smelling skunk always makes me homesick.
Sally, you look healthy and happier since you guys are on this road trip. Have fun🎉.
If you can, stop in abilene and enterprise. Enterprise is my home town, and is a quiet village of about 700 people. Abilene has alot of history, going back to the old west days.
Thanks Sally and Marty 😊😊
Osage orange repel rodents or whatever wants to live in your basement , natural roadside beautification along Highway 69 in eastern Kansas
Husb transferred to a small town in KS. No stoplight. No fast food, except for the “deli” in the gas station 😮Thankfully this is only temporary!
Grew up in Ks. Moved to Seattle & when asked what is like here I say, hot ,flat, dry & boring but there's a lot of nice folks there. Old school living 😉 . Have lots of family in Ks. ,MO & OK. My great grandfather's buried next to Ma Barker of the Barker gang in Ok.
This video is a trip down memory lane for me. My lady, navaguesser and co-driver dies a couple of years ago. We had over 52 years of traveling together around the US and Canada. We stopped at many small places with interesting things to see and experience. We had a C-6 Corvette for our last few years. We drove that marvelous car to eastern Oregon, Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. Last Fall as I was getting ready to store the cat for winter (an powerful RWD car on snow is way more difficult than I can handle anymore) and, after a long day on the coast of Maine, I decided to sell the beast. Driving was simply not the same without Anne.
I am planning to visit a friend in Virginia this Spring. I will be driving the back roads of the Blue Ridge. At the end of summer I plan on driving to and exploring Newfoundland, Canada. That is a moderately long drive with a open sea ferry included.
Good luck on your travels, stay safe and thanks for the video.
Live in a small town in kansas and love it
You actually left Wisconsin !! 😳
Yes!!! 🥳
Telluride Colorado has parking in the middle of the road as well as Ft. Collins Colorado
My brother and I hiked out to that train trestle last week. It is near Jacumba mountains and Carrizo Gorge. I lost count of how many tunnels we went through. Great views and some abandoned train cars along the way
That must have been a great experience!!
Flat, isnt it?
It was surprising to see the bluff overlooking the river.
Hi from East-Central Kansas! The eastern third of Kansas is actually hilly with lots of trees and farm ground, esp in the southeast part of the state (it’s not too far from the Ozarks of Missouri and Arkansas). Lots of coal mining happened in the eastern part of the state back in the day. The land flattens out as you head west, giving way to the high plans, rising in elevation along the way towards the Continental Divide in Colorado.
The flat parts are so flat, you can watch your dog run away for 3 days, as I hear it.
I haven't seen or heard an ice cream truck since the late 70's in South Carolina, but in a tiny Kansas town ?, unbelievable.
I love Kansas-definitely overlooked vacation spot. Thanks for the video.
I love you, Sally and Marty❤. I spent several years at Fort Riley Kansas, and I didn't want to leave! My wife didn't wanted to stay! Kansas is a gorgeous state, and I love going back! I regret not staying! Would move back if I could!
Great job! love the ending. That's what I was missing, the outtakes.
Thanks! The ending was all Marty’s doing 😁
@@SightseeingSally And I enjoyed watching you at work filming the "candy" man.
👍🤠
A great talent you have pulling content from boring places. 😉
Thank you ☺️
👍😆
Thanks for another entertaining video tour. I sure hope Marty can successfully treat his health problem and get his vim and vigor back again.
My favorite number too, Marty! 😊
👍
Marty as usual over-serious
IDK whether Marty's 'health condition' is a secret or if I missed it. I know you've had heart problems Sally but always thought Marty was in good health. Anyway, prayers for the big guy!🙏🙂
I visit that park every fall it is so beautiful.....when you were in Corona you should have kept going west to big brutus its great
If you stop at small gas stations you can buy some pecans cracked for reasonable. Near Missouri. Wait till you see the dead armadillos. Did you stop near Quapaw where there is a deserted town just south of there. Used to be a WW1 or 2 bomb building govt. site that was deserted as it caused pollution of well waters in the area. Many creeks in that area run yellow looking which us leaching and staining from mining.
Great video and again we love Marty's take on things.

Hi Doug and Pam! I also live in New Mexico (Albuquerque) and LOVE Sally and Marty's videos. I have been here for almost 12 years and am a native from San Jose, CA. But Kansas is my favorite state of them all! 🥰😎
Enjoy Big Brutus! Hope it’s open when you go. It’s fun to see it up-close.
Thanks for sharing the fun video! I have traveled through many parts of Kansas but never stopped in Oswego. I plan to be back in the "Sunflower State" to visit friends in May and it will be the first there since the spring of 2017. Cannot wait to be back in my favorite state! 😎 (Tony Bennett left his heart in San Francisco but I left mine in Kansas.) ☺
I was born and raised in Oswego, New York, on Lake Ontario. I never knew that there was another one in the US.
@@colleenpeck6347 Thanks for sharing that information, Colleen! I never knew about the Oswego in NY but knew about the town with that name in Kansas that I still have not visited. But after seeing this interesting video, looks like it is another Kansas town to check out when I am in the state again. 😎
Another Oswego in Illinois
a coal tender its attached to a 0-8-0 switch engine, the little engine was an industrial locomotive
There is a train ride offered seasonally from the Carona train depot that runs to Pittsburg, Ks. (Hence the "shiny rails" on the train tracks). If you liked the train depot at Carona, you'd definitely have loved Big Brutus!
They keep going North on 7, you will run back into 69 just approximately 5 miles south of Ft. Scott, Ks. And then 69 will take you to I - 35 OverPark Ks..take you into KC Mo
First
Yay! Number one 🥳
nice report, great to see you and Marty
Here's another little oddity...At certain times, and on certain streets, parking in the center of the roadway is legal in Oakland, California! (A city with a population of about a half million people).
It's mostly related to church services and funerals or other special occasions.
Best of luck you two.
❤
Breeding season for skunks is going on right now in se ks. I drive locally in this area, and am seeing dozens of dead skunks on the roadways here daily. It's not normally like this year round...lol. Skunks are the new opossum during this time of year!
I grew up in a rural area and never had the pleasure of seeing/hearing an ice cream truck until I was a grown man.
I too, am surprised Marty didn't flag down the truck.😁....I would've!😆🍦
As always, Thumbs up!😎👍
You should explore Trains Sally and looking sexy as a cowgirl!
I think Marty would have enjoyed Big Brutus. You could’ve misread the map again on your way to Oswego and “accidentally “ stumbled upon it
It looks like the Old Parita was known as the Gay Parita, and was built in 1934 as sort a roadhouse.
Almost a 100 years old!!
My dad was from Chicopee and went dancing there before WWII. He also went to the Tower Ballroom in Pittsburgh. He said all the young people lived to dance & listen to the travelling Big Bands.
Yep, I've been studying my husbands genealogy for many years, his Missouri-Kansas ancestors were anti-slavery. They had several run ins during that time with secessionists and slave owners.. The date of Matthew's death coincided with the event known as Bleeding Kansas. I checked the Wiki on Oswego, Kansas and it confirms that Matthews was pro-slavery, a slave owner, and guilty of 'slave hunting'. He and a group of border ruffians raided the town of Humboldt, Kansas where he recaptured several recently freed slaves intending to repatriate them to their former owners. The raid and subsequent events led to his pursuit and death (he was fleeing prosecution) by the calvary from Ft. Scott. There are well documented WIKI's on Oswego, Humboldt, and Bleeding Kansas. Loving your visit to an area I hope to one day visit.
Park Rapids, Minnesota has double parking lanes down the center of its main street.
Awesome video!!
Praying for restored health for Marty. 🙏
Family in Pittsburgh and friends in Parsons.😊 my mom's boyfriend took her to a dance in Oswego a long, long time ago. He was from Parsons.😮
And then there was Baxter and Galena!...and
Mr. BRUTUS!
Lived in kansas my whole life. Nice video.

😉 , Cheers to your good health !
There is a small town in Red Lake County Mn called Oklee that used to have parking in the middle of the street
I thought you two were down there chasing tornadoes..
Love the hat Sally, can we see a close up of it? Prayers for you and Marty's health. We love you❤
The ice cream man passes every day in spring and summer here in Louisiana with the same song every year....sometimes in the winter also...lol
Had a pet skunk back in the 70s while living outside of Wichita. Its momma had been ran over so we took him in . Was one of the best pets I ever had. Poor things are being ran over left & right this month. It's breeding season , they're trying to cross the roads in search of mates 😢

Quapaw just NE Oklahoma.
I have stopped too at Laura Ingals Wilder stop in SE Kansas. Best to go in summer as not open in winter. But we did find it open in April. Walmart was started in NW Arkansas Bentonville. Pitcher OK is the deserted town but they are moving back now.
We did a video on Picher, OK awhile back. Here’s the link in case anyone is interested in watching it.

And I bought a pound of shelled pecans for $13 - is that a good price or should I have paid less?
That was fun! I always get a laugh when you say, "anyways..."and when the map reader makes a mistake when we travel, they get called the NAGAVATOR. LOL
LOL 😂 I love it!
I left that town in 95 and haven't looked back
I understand what you're saying! lol
I just found you recently. I really appreciate you doing the videos on Southeast Kansas. I live a half a mile south of a little town called Hallowell not much there anymore but I sure enjoy your videos. Thank you and keep them coming. I have lived here my whole life.
Like I said, I live here in Southeast Kansas. I think Oswego has one of the most beautiful parks around.
It's an old ambulance!@
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!
Don't forget to go to the OZ winery. And maybe the Guns and Bible church.
There’s a guns and bibles church???

The reason you saw all the dead skunks on the road is that it was their breeding season when you were driving through. They are more active during that time of year, and they wander out on roads and get hit. Normally I don’t see that many dead skunks on the road-just one here and there. I always think of the increase in dead skunks as a sign spring is getting closer
Poor little guys. They go out looking for a mate and wind up taking a nap instead. 😢 We see the same thing in fall with deer in Wisconsin.
And more mice and bugs, the skunks eat them
The owner of the Gay Pairta renamed it after he restored it. He did a beautiful job of restoring it and I did some videos of the restoration. They're on my channel. Your comments on the tender were right on. It was a coal and later oil powered Steam engine. You're right Sally, that is a still and all the rest of your ideas about it are spot on. . The Gay. Parita was all about bootleg whiskey in a dry county.
69th
Lol
😅
Hey I love videos from places I have been. You found Corona, it's a cigar size, can remember that way, JFK liked petite Coronas, had an aid go out and buy a supply before he did the Cuban embargo. Anyway, at Corona is the old Boston Missouri rr depot which I very vaguely remember before the Stockdales bought it and moved it, they stored feed in it. Glad it got moved again and restored. I have seen it at Corona.
Remember dad telling stories about getting on train at Boston and riding to Lamar. They would walk home, only 5 miles, stopping and stealing a watermelon along the way. Ok,, the watermelon growers if asked would have shown the kids the ripest melons and helped them to pick the best. Just a bit of fun from a simpler time.
Keep on sightseeing.
Been awhile since been to Kansas. I see you still love to use what looks like Thomas Guide. Heart of the Heartlands museum looks nice. Always love Train Museum. Marty is always very knowledgeable! Btw, love your hat!! Got to watch your health Marty. What is Big Brutus? Marty is exactly right about the shiny parts of the track. The Old Parita is interesting with 1930s auto. Love that landmark sign. I have heard of Oswego Kansas. Love that old log cabin. That is funny about the ice cream truck. The little town well is an interesting landmark. Old movie theater are always cool. Love the parking spot in the middle of the road. Have seen in a small Washington state town before. Historic parks are nice to visit. Look forward to your further adventures!
The mommy kitty had 6 babies. Tonight around 7:30 PT She had 1 of them die. She had become 'mastic' and the babies had nothing to eat.
Tomorrow I'll get (as much as I can) this taken care of.
