"Oh there's the tag. How responsible of me." LOL, Jess you are adorable
I loved that comment too!!!
I love your unbridled childlike joy when you remember the horseradish. So relatable when you find a garden treasure that you think was gone!
Horseradish never disappears, lol!!!!!
Yes!
“ That is a chaos I am okay with embracing, actually” 🤣😂 That needs to be a sticker!
Telling time by sunshine is so much lovelier than checking a clock 😊
Jess I’ve always been told that pill bugs are good . This is what I found when I looked it up- Pillbugs are scavengers, and they mainly eat decaying plant matter and other decomposing material. They serve as decomposers, breaking down decaying material through eating it and then returning the nutrients to the soil, Sciencing reports.
When I had bare soil, the pill bugs ate my plants. In my beds, with decaying leaves, they didn't touch my plants. I think it depends on what there is for them to eat and how big the population is.
I'm glad she didn't kill them!
If you mulch and do chop and drop, they will target that instead of your live plants. The pill bugs in my garden did just that. Give them something else to eat and they’ll leave your plants alone.
I just sat in my brand new lovely swinging chair in my garden sipping on a glass of wine after a long horrendous work day and had my soul refreshed with wind, nature, new life growing around me and got to enjoy this pure, adorable video from you who encouraged me to put this chair here to enjoy my garden. You will never know how many souls you’ve touched. 🥰
I’m a nurse Jess, and I love how you said we need to “ resuscitate” the soil! That’s how I look at my plants and gardening in general. I love to go to garden centers and buy sale plants to bring home and resuscitate! I just helped a friend plant a perennial bed with plants we resuscitated from the sale rack and they’re flourishing!!! And yes, you always need more plants, and sometimes I have to be sneaky and get them in the ground before my husband catches me!!! 😂🪴🪴🪴🪴
Me too-40 years as an RN and I can't help but try to save things!
@@lyndaash6766 40 years for me too!
I absolutely adore you! I just want to say thank you for doing what you do. You are the reason I started a garden last year. Your vertical gardening video showed me how I could grow a garden when I thought I didn't have enough space. It was definitely my classroom! I didn't have a successful harvest but I wouldn't call it a failure because I learned A LOT!! So, thank you 😊
I remember my fascination with roly-polies on my grandma's back porch when I was about 3 years old. I'm 65 now and to this day, I think back to that when I run across them -- just can't resist touching them and watching them roll up in a ball. I don't kill them either but they've never caused me any grief in the garden. They're beneficial, eating mostly decaying material and returning the nutrients to the soil. They rarely eat living plants. Come to find out they aren't an insect but rather are the only crustaceans that have adapted to living entirely on land. Roly-polies are our friends! 😃
I remember that wild child squash. It made me want to grow every traveling vine known to the gardening world. Last summer we had a kombucha squash that went from one side of the 3 sisters garden to the other making harvesting the middle pole almost impossible. Coming from a decent sized California yard to Kentucky acreage has been such a learning curve. But my favorite saying is grow happy & be free!!!
It was good to see Mr. Ben in the garden. My little grand daughter is my gardening buddy. At 2yo, she will sit for hours with her pots & ‘spoon’ helping me up pot our herbs. I’m in heaven on earth.
Thanks Jess!!!
That is so sweet.
I remember the wild kakuzi squash. It pulled down a giant sunflower and took over a couple arch trellises too. It was glorious.
“Never miss out on a dirty little garden snack”
New shirt idea. I’d buy that
I said the same thing when she said that!
@@trishapomeroy9251 I call these Jess-isms and they are just the best!! 😂
People:"These things go wild, they take over"
Me:"have y'all met Jess? she's totally planting that"
I just absolutely love how REAL YOU ARE, eating a dirty cartot wont hurt you. My Italian Great uncle grew the most amazing cartots and other veggies. Didnt matter what time we went to Uncle Averill's and Norinas we got a carrot pulled out of the ground wiped off or swished in his pond and ate them and wanted more. I'm sure we ate a bunch of dirt !!!
"Be free, little wildlings!" Perfect sentiment for letting your garden grow wild and free. We have passionfruit growing wild in our yard. No idea how it got here. I discovered it two years ago and yes, it does take over. But I love it. I plan to transplant some nearer to my garden this year and enjoy it's beauty. (Your new haircut looks lovely by the way.) 💇♀😄
“Be free, little wildlings” great idea for a tshirt
This happened to us with a Weeping Cherry tree and a Mulberries Tree. Nature is awesome!!
@@julieb7068 that’s hilarious
@@julieb7068 could be confused to mean something else, like ‘free the ta-tas.’
You know when I was a kid my mom gave me a real potato for my toy. And it was fun. I think it’s why I grew toys last year.
Having my herbs right outside my patio doors makes a quick addition of herbs so easy. It also inspires me to find more recipes that are transformed by the right ones.
Jess talking about the things she loves.... as her beautiful mountain of a man is taking the trash out in the background... that was amazing!
Jess! I started my very first seeds today! I have watched your videos, read your book, took your and Jill's Growing Gardeners Course, printed the pdfs, taken notes and all in preparedness, and now this is really happening! Well, hopefully those babies grow! Haha
You have such an energy in this video that I haven't seen for a little while, (omgosh, no pressure) and I mean that in the best way possible! Life has a way of ebbing and flowing, and I just want to say that you and your energy have uplifted me today. Thank you for that and for being such a great teacher who's willing to "lick the dirt."
Lol when I was a kid and in the garden with my dad we’d each pull a carrot wipe it on our jeans or the grass and eat it! You brought back a 50 year old memory !❤️
My cheeks are hurting from smiling watching you smile so much being in your garden. It's been awhile since I've seen you this happy! I just love it and am so happy that you have your garden spaces back :)
Jess you’re adorable! I love your enthusiasm and excitement. Keep a mindful eye on your horseradish… once Established it’ll be there for life. forever! It’s a garden bully so don’t put anything that needs it’s space near it. In 10 years time it’ll be a full bed of horseradish lol just speaking from experience. In the north of Canada there are whole backyards lost to horseradish from old Babusia gardens♥️
My experience as well!
If you place a piece of wood the rolly polly bugs will congregate under it as a place of shelter and then you can gather them up and relocate them. They are really a good composter if given the right environment to work.
I haven't been on in a while and the 1st thing I noticed, after I watched just a bit, was your new hairdo!!! So pretty and the hi-lites are just right! Now back to content! Lol! Basil is my favorite too! Last year I had a bumper crop so I'm having to find larger containers to put all of them in once I have dried them! Blessings as always!
Jess sister you are like a big hug. God truly uses you to bless others and that is a beautiful thing. Love ya!
It's such fun to see gardeners get excited about the promise and potential of a new season. I'm feeling the same. Happy growing to all!
Love these last couple of videos about milking the cow and the big greenhouse and cleaning out the kitchen garden and replanting the herbs in the stackable planters.
I was gonna say that too. A kitchen garden, salsa/herb garden. Zinnias for sure. They are so enchanting. I have a big balcony garden. After my husband passed those Zinnias helped me to keep living.
Oh my goodness is it just me or are you just hilarious to listen to today. I think it started when you tossed the ripped plant into the container and said in an off handed way that of course you would plant it later. I'm going to have to watch this again so I don't miss anything... With a serious face... Cause you are so full of information. Thanks for making my day.
This whole video tickled me too!
Passion fruit does love to climb and spread. Not only are the flowers beautiful, but the fruit that follows is healthy and delicious! When the it is ready for harvesting, it should begin to fall off the vine on its own without any damage. Thank you for your videos, Jess! God bless you and your family.
Your joy is contagious! What a good trait to have. Thank you again for inspiring my old bones to get out of the recliner and get to planting things.🥰✝️🌹
You are certainly a gift to all of us. i thank God for you.
New quote for shirts ! “ Garden Victory “YES!💚
Passaflora is a food, the fruit, and the flowers/leaves make a beautiful medicine, tea/tincture, for anxiety and stress. A beautiful addition to a cup of tea. Let it go and grow. Beautiful, medicine, food. 🤗
You are a kindred spirit. Last year I had many volunteer cherry tomatoes and bird seed sunflowers and millet growing all over my yard. I even had a wild prairie sunflower grow like a tree. My zinnias were like a jungle. It was glorious.
You. Are. Back!! 🙌
This is where you shine the most!! 🌟
I had a Passion Fruit Vine when I was a child in Los Angeles in our backyard. it went everywhere! Nice apricot-colored fruits with a sweet-sour jelly inside with seeds. Tasty and oh those flowers are gorgeous!
I’m growing passionfruit vine for the first time! Mine will be living in a pot in a greenhouse because I live in the cold north of Canada zone 3. Do you think I might possibly get fruit off of it this Summer, first year vines?
"Cooking with fresh herbs feels like luxury." I love that one!
I love my oregano. He's been in the same pot for years. He dies off in the winter, and faithfully comes back every spring.
I am feeling your happiness. Jess, this is my favorite video while you are in your new home. I can feel your joy in my bones.
That horseradish will be there forever . The roots go down forever. I planted a plant in my veggie bed as a temporary thing but it has established now!
Love love mama!! Growing our food is such a joy !!
"I love a wild plant that has a mind of its own" - that's my girl Jess!! 😁
Instead of sitting out buckets, your claw foot tub would be an awesome way to catch rainwater to scoop out with a watering can. We use old tubs/baths here in UK allotments lots! A claw foot would be so dreamy!
You’re love for wildness, willingness and yearning desire to see how you enjoy a plant inspires me. It has taught me to enjoy the garden and try things that seem crazy and enjoy the gardening journey. I have messed up a lot the past three years of gardening but I love that I am failing also because I am learning. Thank you for that mindset. Christ is using you to help me provide for my son who has a rare kidney disease and the rest of my family. I was stressed when I got the news that we had to change our life style but God sent me to you. I thank Him and praise Him for it. I bless you and your family always.
Thank you for giving me permission to fail without being a failure and that it's only a lesson... Keep going and growing.
I love you willingness to let the Passion flower do it’s thing! It will be beautiful!
My grandma grew horseradish on the banks of an irrigation ditch behind a bunkhouse, and it was amazing :-) As a small child I remember her clamping a crank grinder to the back step and setting me to the task of grinding the roots. I also remember tears running down my face because the fumes were so hot and spicy. That stuff could be used in chemical sprays it's so strong.
Love your garden tours. My mum always planted climbers in threes. Usually included one rich coloured and one white clematis and a rose. We’d call them ready, steady and go. Family/friends language. “Is that ‘Ready’, mums?”. “No”, she’d reply, “That’s “Steady.” Always a giggle…
Lol so true!! My nephew told me on Easter that I need a bigger house for all my plants! 🤣 I took that as a compliment 🪴🌱🌿
The butterflies and wildlife will thank you for the passion flower! It is a native plant to the southeast
Love this UA-cam. I think it is one of the all natural and funniest one have seen of you. Thanks for not editing it to much.
Your nephew dog checking out the chewy boxes is adorable 😍
I love you Jess!!!! You are the absolute best!!! Your enthusiasm and joy is contagious ❤️🙏❤️

The second you started explaining how this passion flower vine will take over and I saw you digging this hole I knew... this is your next cucuzza squash plant. And I cannot wait to see what this does - AHHH I LOVE IT 😂💖 ----- What I learned last year.... oregano spreads.... I have a full bed of oregano now. The victory... I started my own seeds last year!
Yes😅
i'm looking forward to seeing hers takeover, some sneaky little thing is eating the leaves of mine😭
My daughter was doing a project on Cambodia for school, i thought i will never get the opportunity again. so i made salt and pepper crickets that i got from the pet shop and my daughter feed them to her class and about 4 teachers. The whole week leading up to it made me happy as
I love watching your videos in the morning with my 10 month old. It brings me sanity and focus. Thanks! My garden victory this week was that my poppies started blooming, first flower I have successfully grown from seed. Also irises popped up too along our driveway from my husband's mother planting them years ago when she was alive. I've got a ton of sawtooth blackberries all over the property and all my okra and peas have sprouted among other things so I am very pleased with the way the year is starting. Blessings to y'all!
In grade school we had a field trip to a farm and the guy there licked a SLUG! I don’t remember anything else from the trip but that! And he said it tasted like water. LOVE your wisdom and attitude! ❤️
Child! Your passion flower/ Maypop as we call them are just wonderful!!! Proud to see you planting it!!!
I grew up in eastern Arkansas and you’re the FIRST person outside my family that calls them MAYPOPS! Maybe we’re not crazy after all! 😆
@@shesatitagain234 no Sweetheart! When we were children my grandmother lived on a dirt road and we would go walking after supper. When they were growing the fruit we'd pick them when they were green and make things with the maypops and toothpicks. Grandma always had toothpicks for us to play. But please take into account that was a LONG time ago! 😆😆 I am a dinosaur! I'm in SC.
Cindy I remember them always growing on a dirt road, too. They vines would be covered with settled dust from folks driving by but the blooms were spectacular. I was likely in my late 40’s before realizing these were actually the popular PASSIONFLOWER people were talking about. The maypops looked almost like green figs if I remember correctly. We were COUNTRY and I probably thought they were poison (as were most things outside the supermarket, in my mind). 😄
@@shesatitagain234 wonderful memories!!!!!
Giddy garden Jess is back 🥰🥰🥰
I don't remember a time there has not been some sort of garden in our midst, coming from a history of hunters and gatherers. My dad always said: "You HAVE to eat a peck of dirt before you die." And- Passion flowers are beautiful!
Just a hint for if you can't find horseradish for your fire cider- "Bubbies" lacto fermented (refrigerated section) works great! And once you get your horseradish going strong, the leaves help lacto fermented pickles stay crunchy🙂
When we lived in Illinois, morning glories were illegal in the region we were in. They were so invasive they would get entangled in corn and soybean crops and ruin farm equipment. To this day I have not planted them and now I live in Washington State.
"that never actually goes away"....haha, so true, I love that!
Wahoooooo got my sunflower seeds today from Sunflower Steve!!! So excited to have been a part of his legacy and get to grow those gorgeous sunflowers!
Your surprise at the horseradish root just killed me !!! But be aware, when my Mom had it in our garden , our dog decided to dig it up and eat it , a few years in a row, maybe we had a weird dog, or maybe they like it !! Lol keep an eye 😮LOVE LOVE LOVE all your gardening videos, and your infectious enthusiasm ❤Thank you Jess , can’t wait to see what your little farm can accomplish
Love growing herbs. Most of mine are in pots on the side of the house. In my bed against the house I have mint and people said be careful it will take over. It is going on 4 years now and has not taken over. Your herbs look beautiful.
A little dirt will not hurt you! My mom said I was proof of that - when I was little I would eat it. Still today I will pull something out of the garden and snack on it without washing.
Grew horse radish in raised bed and it took off roots down 2ft and spread took years to clear out you have to get every little piece or you start over again.
Plant in a space knowing this will be it's permanent home and you'll both be happy
I too share a love of wild garden beauty. Oh how about giving your rollypollies to your chickens, free treats 😊. Bless your heart ♥️
Another wonderful video, Jess. We are moving to our land this summer and your channel has been such and inspiration over the years. You are the main reason my kids are so excited to garden and raise animals!
I love your excitement over your horse radish 🥰
Thanks for cheering me up today🎉🐦.
We had ice balls all last night and Storms today!
JO JO IN VT 💕😄
Passion flowers are beautiful and smell like a cross between roses and honeysuckle. I have had them growing on my fence around my yard for over 20 years. We mow them and have to cut them down from the trees as they will reach out and grab them. I love them and will never get rid of them.
It makes me so happy to reminisce with you about past seasons of gardening. I never miss an episode and to be able to recall that sunflower supporting the kukozi squash was so glorious. 🥰
If you love wild…grow loofas. Pollinators love them and at the end of the season you have massive loofas for various things :)
YAY!!!! Gardening with Jess again!!🥰 Happy Day!!!!
Your video’s bring me so much joy! Started seedlings indoors and hope to start my outdoor garden as soon as the snow stops (Upstate New York). You are a TRUE BLESSING for plant lovers like myself! 🙏❤️
Its nice to see you so happy and in the garden. Thanks Jess. 💗🌸🌻
I adore you and your enthusiasm and randomness. ❤
Pill bugs, sometimes also referred to as roly-pollies, primarily consume plant matter that is either decaying or is already dead and decomposed. Their preferred foods are soft decaying plants like grasses and leaves, but they may also eat mulch used in landscaping around the house.
Thank You Jess you Bless me every time I see your videos ♥️♥️♥️
I love your hair! And your garden of course!
So pertaining to your passion fruit vine. It's all about plant management right. Nothing should never take over if managed. I think it will be beautiful
Your mood for this video is golden!
Speaking of wild things...
Y'all aught to grow a Lady Banks Rose. It would compete nicely with that Passion Flower Vine to cover the entire pergola!
And it has THE cutest little yellow rose, literally only ¼ across! Or sometimes you can find a big one who's a ½ inch across!
They're awesome!
Our weather is finally getting warmer starting today. I took the ones in the mini greenhouse out and placed them on my table. The ones from my kitchen went into the mini greenhouse. I've got more that'll need to go out later on. I'm grateful it's starting to get warm. I have no more space in my kitchen or bedroom growing spaces.
Bahaha! That passion fruit vine will cover that entire pergola if you train it and let it. The flowers will be glorious. The root systemight not let other things grow in that raised bed nearby but if you like the wild things then you'll LOVE this! 💗
Oh Jess, our entire summer just past (Western Australia) we have experienced 35 to 42°c for at least 5 months. Growing anything has been so challenging. As we move into Autumn (April,2022) the nights are much cooler and days around 22 to 26°c.
I praying for a decent harvest this winter with brassica's and the greens. We definitely are suffering from climate engineering.
Stay happy and grow 🥒🥦🥕🌽🍄💛
I learned more in this video because you showed how to do the things you were talking about! I’m more of a visual learner! I remember it better when I hear and see it at the same time!
I remember watching someone in the US planting lantana and it blew me away. It's a HUGE invasive pest in Australia, nobody would choose to grow it!
Horseradish will eventually take over that whole bed. My husband planted some in one of my boxes and now roots constantly come up, it's so aggressive, doesn't give up!
The excitement over the forgotten horseradish! Love it 😂❤️ I dug up a neglected old bed today and smelled mint among the weeds. Did a little happy dance and replanted. 😂 My hubby was amused. PS currently sipping camomile.
Years ago I grew one in my garden. Used an old umbrella skeleton as a trellis for it and became its own identity until The gulf fritillaries caterpillar decimated it as it is one of its main sources of food. I’m in zone 8b high desert SoCal.
I find myself smiling through your whole vlog...I think my husband wonders about me. Thanks for the blessing.
Our horseradish ended up growing everywhere but so very tasty! ❤️
I send the kids that are running around out to the garden for the fresh herbs. It's a great plant ID lesson!
The Passion flower vine is going to be lovely.
I grew nasturtium from seeds and planted them a few weeks ago into the herb garden. They are flourishing.
So good to see you back in the garden again!
I love your squash story. I love passion flower. When they bloom they are so pretty.
