I don’t know if you have any plans for this, but y’all may want to consider putting in some block bays and create a dedicated space for gravel, mulch, chips, compost, and sand (or anything else. This will help keep it contained, cleaned up, and just easier. A big concrete pad under it all with make scooping easy. If not, you will find that y’all have random piles scattered and have to work around them. Just a thought since y’all have such a larger property and an even larger goal.

Jess- re: your ailing yet so very gorgeous tree-
If you haven't done so already, check the ph of the soil, amend as needed for that trees needs.
If you need to prune, cut no more than 30% at a time. Pruning is stressful for trees, but especially older/ailing trees.
Remove the grass from around the tree trunk perimeter by several feet, as it sucks up the water the tree needs. Add compost and mulch.
Not sure if I saw bark loss, ask a local arborist how to protect the cambium from exposure.
Last, plant a few beautiful trees in the immediate area. At some point you will need to make the hard decision to let your older tree go. For now you can invest in a few trees that will be building good roots and you won't have a hole in the area when you take the old tree down. Hugs!

I'm a Master Arborist (BCMA WI-1206B) I've concerns with the grade change around the tree. It looks like clayee soil that is getting compacted. This can cause problems with water infiltration and gas exchange.
I'm glad you're not mounding it over the basal flair though.
I'd suggest planting prairie perennials in there now, deep strongly gravitropic roots.
There look to be a number of SC seed sources that you can get genetic close to your region.

    • @sandieweatherup
      @sandieweatherup 2 роки тому +9

Great advice. I'd still get a local arborist to put his eyes & hands on that tree.
When I saw the soil build up over the root area I thought, oh no.

Hi a quick suggestion 're plants for your paved area in front your greenhouse and around your fountain. Carpet Thyme varieties would love an area like that and maybe Lawn Chamomile (I'm not sure if it would suit your climate) but both those plants are used in similar ways here in the UK and when you walk on them, they smell glorious. Anyway just an idea ☺

Jess, My late husband was a tree surgeon, and I believe he would clean out the cavity and fill it with some kind of a foam fill. He would also give micro injections at the base of the tree to give it more time. I am not a tree surgeon, so you might find one and pick his brain. I may be wrong, that is just what I remember him doing. Injections must be purchased by a Arborist with a induction license. Good Luck, and Blessing for your tree.

I had a patient once who had an epic tree...it was super sentimental because when they were little kids, she and her hubby had carved their names on the tree trunk, and when they got engaged her hubby carved a big heart around it, and they had their engagement photos there, and their wedding and reception was held underneath it...it was just THEIR tree...and it got sick. It got BAD sick, and after spending a lot of money on trying to save it, and finally admitting defeat...they put a big sturdy metal frame around the carving, and then planted a dark purple wisteria for him, a pink wisteria for her, a white wisteria for their daughter and a light purple wisteria for their son around the trunk, and trained them to go up the trunk. The tree was all alone at the top of the hill, and they kept trimming and training till those wisteria had turned into a huge wisteria tree, climbing the branches and then replacing them as the wisteria got older and grew together. It was absolutely fantastic. You could see it blooming a long ways off.

I am an arborist. The worst things you can do to an ailing tree is pile soil on top of the roots and drive with heavy equipment in the drip zone. My advice would be to construct a berm along/around the pond to keep the water from staying around the tree which can cause root rot and or suffocation.

That's what I was thinking having been a student. You're right.
What about insect damage treatment with insects loving moisture damage? I hate for them to lose that old tree. I then hear you describe the fountain that will flow out of the center, out of where His heart was, as He is the living water, then you say the benches will be upon the sides, well as Christians we rest in His hands, we are written upon the palms of His hands. Then just a couple weeks ago one of those people that he had left a message with 2 years ago called and dumped 3 MASSIVE loads of wood chips. I almost cried from happiness 😅 something you don't anticipate living in the country is how hard it can be to get things like woodchips! But it is such a blessing because we cover our whole fruit forest in woodchips to keep the weeds out, and we want to cover all our pathways in the garden as well, and those to projects require so much woodchips! And then constantly need to top up since it breaks down and turns to such rich soil! Which is a pro and a con 😅

Wooly thyme would be great between your papers as it can hold its own in the sun and it smells heavenly.

Davey Tree has the best reputation for arborists, if they have a branch in your area.

I wanted you to know that when you said "your garden is a classroom" I was listening. We are in our early 70's and have wanted a place with 5-10 acres so we can have our own chickens, beef and pork. We have an acre here and have planted fruit trees, blueberries, raspberries etc, and expanding our garden.. I've incorporated some of your ideas. We have built a brick fire pit right by the garden and mini orchard for a place to rest and enjoy watching the hummingbirds and admire our hard work. I think we will probably stay here and share all we've worked so hard for with our family and friends. But it's still a classroom, I have little gardeners that like to help grandma. Blessings to you

Suggesting Woolly Thyme between the pavers Jess. It’s fragrant and soft on the feet very tactile. Maybe more than one kind of filler. Whatever you choose it will be beautiful!

get a few bottles of 3% hydrogen peroxide and put a spray bottle sprayer in the bottle and spray the wounded areas of that tree well early am or late pm once a week and the tree will hopefully start healing itself

Have an ISA- certified arborist out. Don't compact with heavy machinery, and don't pile soil around the trunk.

I would have an arborist look at the tree. You may be able to fill the void with something to prolong the life of the tree. An arborist would know.

Use a solar power system to get air movement, that might help. Your property is looking amazing 🤩
