Hey, I'm in West Michigan! I like to watch random what's in my bag videos and came across you. Now that I've taken a moment to watch a couple of your videos I can definitely say you have some top tier work. Your style is pretty one of a kind. Your clients are paying for your unique perspective and not a multi-cam video of their ceremony and speeches. That makes it easier to not pack those extras.
Hey hey, thanks so much for those kind words - that means a ton! That's exactly what I'm going for with my films...a very different type of approach to storytelling (and I know it's not for everyone!) that allows me to approach the actual filmmaking process in a bit of a different way as well. Glad that came across in the films you watched...appreciate you reaching out!
@@joshrexford True. Shooting weddings, I always bring it to do macro shots. One time I left my 85 at home and tried the 100.... it has a look that is just so nice. Even though I'm on Canon R6, I use the EF 100 f/2.8 L that I bought used and like $500 and it's golden.
@@joshrexford yh I do. It allows you to get unique Shots you can't get with an 85mm. We Use it mainly for outdoor couple portrait session. shots taken with a135mm focal lengh at f1.8 will make you stand out from the competition.
I'm shooting my first wedding in a few weeks. I'll be running my R5 and R6 with my RF 15-35, RF 100 2.8, RF 85 1.2 and RF 70-200. I'll probably throw my RF 50 1.8 just in case. I'm excited but nervous.
Congrats on your first wedding!! That sounds like a great kit for the day - that 50mm will be super nice to have with you 🙌🏼 if you have any questions feel free to shoot me a DM on Instagram!
Well prensented. Would love to see a video (assuming you haven't made it already) of what it looks like to be hired to do both photo and video. As a hybrid shooter myself, having to bring on extra hands helps, but if you're flying solo, the idea can seem a little daunting.
Ha it’s DEFINITELY daunting but I’ve been able to work out a method that works. In process of writing a video to show how I do that - will get that out as soon as I’m able!
Nice practice with the harddrive-I am going to start doing that. What are you more scared of? Losing a $15,000 camera bag, or the wrath of the bride and groom if you lose their footage hahaha
Haha absolutely - I'd rather throw that whole kit out and keep my client's stuff safe 😂 gear can be replaced...once-in-a-lifetime memories, not so much!
Hi Josh! Great video! I was wondering, since you’ve used a 1DX m2 before, did you use it for both photo and video? And also do you think it would still get the job done for you today if you hadn’t made the switch to the mirror less? Did you make the switch to mirror less because of the additional weight savings you get with it? Thanks again for the vid, keep on creating sir!
Hey hey - thanks so much! I used the 1DX Mark II for several years for both photo and video and it was truly a great camera! The main reason I ended up switching was because I wanted to be able to shoot 4K 120fps and that's not something the 1DXII offered AND because the 4K codec on the 1DX was substantially more space-heavy than what was offered on the R3/R5/R6. But if you're okay with a few of those compromises, the 1DXII is still a great camera!
Hey Josh great video! Noticed you've kept all your ef lenses for the mirrorless, I'm looking to upgrade to an R6. How are you finding working the ef lenses with mirrorless? Does all the focusing work as fast as if native without an adapter?
Great question - I’ve honestly had no problem using the EF adapter on both the R6 and the R3. I can’t truly compare the AF speeds between the EF/RF lenses as I don’t currently own any RF lenses but what I can say is that the focusing speed with the EF lenses and the adapter hasn’t felt any slower than using my EF lenses on the 1Dx Mark II (which was always nice and snappy) so I have zero complaints!
Glad I could be of help 🙌🏼🙌🏼 if you end up getting it, I have a whole video on some custom R6 settings as well that might be worth checking out…it’s a brilliant camera as-is but some tweaking makes it even better 🤙🏼
Love this Setup! As someone who loves gear its struggle to minimalise it haha, Found it interesting how you don't use lav mics for vows, do you record speeches with the zoom h6 or use the rode? just curious haha
Haha I totally feel you there! It’s SO easy to overpack and load stuff up 😅 and great question on speeches…I actually don’t include speeches in my typical wedding films so that alleviates the need for those external mics. My films are heavily based around the narrative story of the couple and their vows, both of which we record on a different day or before/after the wedding. I do offer standalone speech videos if the couple wants that and for those I would have to use a recorder/etc, but for my normal films I don’t need anything external. Great questions, keep ‘em coming 🤙🏼
Yep exactly! I do the ceremony handheld as well - my films don’t incorporate full ceremony coverage so that allows me to stay handheld throughout the whole day.
Hahaha well, for shooting photo AND video at the same time it’s pretty stripped back! No drone, gimbal, external monitors, focus pulls, etc. but it’s definitely not just a single body/lens setup, I’ll give ya that 😂
Finally someone that is not sony
sony rules my bro
Indeed minimal kit (lenses) but biiiiggg r3.

Finally, someone who loves the 100mm as a portrait lens/longer reach lens as much as I do. ;-)
Legitimately such a great lens! And used to be so so affordable too…

Thanks so so much man!!
Awesome video! Plus your production quality is insane!!
Really appreciate the love!! Trying hard to dial in my lighting/visual setup, glad to hear it’s paying off 🎉🎉
Nice setup! I was considering this bag but went with the wandrd prvke 31L instead.
Thanks much! I looked at the Prvke but it didn’t quite fit the specific needs I had…such a great bag though!

so you handheld an entire wedding? What about ceremony shots?

That’s minimal?? Lol
That’s what my back says too 😂 at least there’s not drones, gimbals, tripods, etc!
