The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This IS the sixties. I know, I was there.
Beautiful woman
This is my father’s earliest childhood memory. Think of him every time I hear it.
Brings happy tears so wonderful. Petula soul.
She kept singing # 1 hits all over the world :)
A living Legand....classic Pop ....
Petula Clark is THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
Timeless. And just think she was actually 32 years old when she broke out with this hit two months earlier in March of 1965.
Man, can she ever belt it out! Amazing!!!
Thanks Petula!! It's a shame such legends like her and Paul Anka hasn't been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
So lovable
Wow! What a performer! What an entertainer! She has such marvelous energy and enthusiasm in her delivery and performance. Honestly, there aren’t that many musicians that are that much better when you see them perform than there is from the recording. You feel like she is there 110%, loving and believing in what she’s doing. Wow! Just wow!
inkyguy: This is partly why Petula is the best female vocalist of all time.
Also a INCREDIBLE entertainer in all genres of the Entertainment industry.
Musicians who are better. 0
A cellar full of noise!!
Love that line.
That line's actually a tribute to The Beatles! Legend has it that Petula Clark once caught their performance at The Cavern Club when they were still The Quarrymen. She definitely loved hearing their style of music and would salute them a few years later with that one line in a now classic song.
"A Cellarful of Noise" is the title of the 1964 autobiography of Brian Epstein, the Beatles manager. The phrase refers to the Beatles playing at the Cavern Club in Liverpool.
@@JoseMorales-lw5nt This information is absolutely correct.
Melodic drive always delivered with memorable punch.
Absolutely the greatest. I met her once and she was as sweet as can be. I love Pet!!!
She is so wonderful. Was there ever a time when people were so happy? She’s like a cocker spaniel running through a field: as exuberant and happy as she can be.
Love her since I was 10 in 1964❤
FABULOUS performance. Love it! Live, different instruments. So exciting!!!
Petula!!!!
It's amazing that it needs to be explained what exactly The Ed Sullivan Show was about in the "show more" area! Then again, this appearance was 56 years ago, and I remember thinking how ancient "The Jazz Singer" with Al Jolson looked in 1965 and that film was only 38 years old at the time!
It seemed ancient because it was essentially a silent film with a little bit of dialogue. You lived in nothing but an age of talking movies and talking television
@@michaelrochester48 It also had to do with the poor quality of the print, the hairstyles and the pale makeup actors wore in those silent film days. While the '60's styles are much different than today, they were still "groovier" despite the 56 year difference vs. the 38 year difference.
good girl, good program
Always a pleasure to see and hear Pet! Thank you for this great ulpoad. More performances of Connie Francis would be very much appreciated . As would uploads of Vikki Carr, Brenda Lee, Patti Page and The McGuire Sisters.
Her first appearance when she arrived at the airport only 45 mins before the show. See the "Ed Sullivan Interviews Petula Clark" video on this channel where Ed and Pet discuss it.
I believe she arrived just in time for the Sunday afternoon rehearsal before a live audience. As the story goes, the tempo of the song was off and Petula stopped the rehearsal to get it right.
@@annemoore733 I don't think they had a live audience for rehearsals.
@@MostlyBrenda Yes, they had a full audience for rehearsal. Ed believed the rehearsal audience reaction would reflect the reaction of the nation. He sometimes made changes according to the rehearsal audience reaction.
@@annemoore733 The official Ed sullivan site states "Petula first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show on March 14th 1965. As Ed later explained during his “Best of the 1960s” special, her plane landed and 45 minutes later she performed live without any rehearsal. " I know that Pet tells it differently, but, if you think about, what is the point of the whole story if she actually was at rehearsal? Can't give links here but if you search part of the quote above, you can find Clark's bio page on the Sullivan site.
Oh, goody, another Petula Clark performance! But I am waiting for her May 16, 1965, appearance. [Checks date on this one.] Here it is! Thank you so much for posting this one finally! We had tuned in to see this show. She was my favorite singer then (age almost 13), and still is one of my favorites. But a thunderstorm rolled in before her bit came on, and my mother made us turn off the TV, as she always did during such storms.
The Beach Boys, another big favorite of mine (and still are), were also scheduled for that show, but at the beginning, Ed announced that they had to cancel due to group leader Brian Wilson being ill.
Put on O'Sullivan show too speed upp the slow doppy Irish Boyo running the Slow show.
😘💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕Petula
Yaw know, Still so good in 2023 :) Enjoy the Music ;)
Wonderful as always!...❤️
love Petula so many great hits and on a side note Jimmy Page was one of the session guitarists on Downtown.
She also worked with the wrecking crew in Los Angeles
@@michaelrochester48 yep
@@michaelrochester48 The Wrecking Crew were the Real sound of The Partridge Family apart from the real vocals of David Cassidy and Shirley Jones.
Bagus sekali 👍👍👍
Mu my favourite song mary
So True..

Not sure if singing a few words of "Downtown" at the end justifies inclusion in the title of this video as people searching for "Downtown" performances will be greatly disappointed with this video. But "I Know A Place" is a fantastic song and Petula delivers it solidly.
I don’t think anyone can be disappointed with this ..the Ed Sullivan Downtown is easily found on you tube too and they get to hear Petula’s second Grammy Award for best female vocal !
Petula never disappoints, so i doubt people would mind.
@@mikeyenfield Yes mikeyenfield as you correctly state Downtown is easily found everywhere on YouvTube.
I do have to ask though why they thought it was a good idea to have a few bars of Downtown on the end of a EXTREMELY ENERGETIC AND ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT performance.
Anyway Petula Clark is PHENOMENAL here.
WOW!!!!Can't she belt out a song?
You had better believe it.
I think that they got it very wrong in the Sixties.
I should have been Petula who was called "Little Miss Dynamite" and not Little Eva.
@@darrenplumpton9737 Probably because she had only just become famous in the USA and by singing those last few bars it reminded people who had heard Downtown but didn’t know her name that this was her excellent follow up
@@mikeyenfield PETULA CLARK IS THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
Ed Sullivan certainly gave Petula Clark a big boost in the USA. According to the good folks at IMDb, this appearance we see here was her second (the first was on March 14) appearance of 1965, and she would make two more appearances later in the year. In 1966, she - again - was on The Ed Sullivan Show four times. In 1967, Petula was on the show three times, and her final appearance was in 1969. How many other acts were on The
Ed Sullivan Show twelve times?
America took Petula well and truly to their hearts....And still do.
Also don't forget that apart from The Ed Sullivan Show Petula also made frequent appearances on The Dean Martin Show,The Jack Benny Show and Andy Williams Show.
This is one of the reasons Petula had a ASTOUNDING FIFTHTEEN CONSECUTIVE HITS in the American Hot One Hundred.
And deservidly so.
...probably the Supremes!!
Gud
Karen Carpenter really looked up to Petula Clark and they were really good friends.
So she performed the same songs on two different appearances on the show? I didn't know they let people do that.
As great as "Downtown" is, in my humble opinion "IKAP" I feel is greater.
Have U Ever Seen Those Streets
That They Have Put There @ Downtown
Go on And Take A Real Good Look
This Time Mz. Darling: What's Her Last Name ?
