Imagine being a merchant sailor, looking at the periscope of a submarine that might sink your ship, already worrying about what could happen, only to see shells wizz right over your head as your supposed savior fires into the general direction of the sub whilst heading straight towards your ship at flank speed.
All while looking at all the ice and knowing just how cold that water is going to be; the fate of the Titanic passengers (still relatively recent only 30 odd years ago) in the water and how quickly they froze to death.
You're getting good at hunting subs as you are driving one. The blind run with no sonar support against Charlie was a thing of beauty. Guessing the 5in guns hits plus depth charge hit immediately killed him. Love your destroyer hunting content!
@@Wolfpack345The early credits made me think for a second: Oh no does this mean that USS Janson will get torpedoed any moment?? That was a nice dramatic effect!
You want choppy water when sailing through ice. Makes the ice better to see when the waves break over the iceberg. In a CBDR situation, you want to pass to the stern of the oncoming vessel. So if you have a ship coming from your STBD, you slow, come to STBD, pass Port Side to Port Side, and circle around their stern, and the general rule of thumb is Vessels to STBD have the right of way.
I mean, at the same token, you should probably give a warship, actively engaging in combat, right of way. They ARE the one actively trying to save your bacon.
I've learned doing the tutorial then watching your videos really helps to see the application of all the different stations at work. The tutorial kind of just tells you how to use it without showing you hands on
Those U-boats really could use an AI upgrade ... . They should dive as soon as they see the flash of the 5", not only after the first shrapnel hit their conning tower ... and then not come up again to the surface to complete the attack run, but evade. And shoot their torps from 800m, instead of running in to 150m of the cargo ships.
As it is, it gives players something to shoot at, which seems to be a conscious design decision. Don't think you're getting a "hardcore"/realistic experience without mods.
Also not keep their periscope up so damn long that it brings the escorts _straight_ to you. Seeing how long those feathers stay visible I was like "wtf"
Dear skipper, stop interrupting Mountie's pathway xDD Excellent job anyways. I love your videos from Destroyer and looking for some more content from this excellent game ;)
Another great adventure that really gets my blood moving. This is a whole ot more complicated than SH3 or U-boat. At least that's the way it seems to me. Thank you for the Great entertaining that went along with it.
I'm not sure I'd call it more complicated, but with more pressure. Submarine games you can take more or less as much time as you want to plan, while with this you have to get to the targets and sink them quickly and efficiently.
"Go get 'em Tiger ..." "Contact Dog ... Now Bears" ? Bears ? Like ... Polar Bears riding on those icebergs!?! hee hee. Those Flower Class Corvettes with an open "weather" bridge must have been hideous to try to man. I know they were built ASAP from Whaler Ship plans, but they must've lost a lot of crew to pneumonia.
Have you hit a iceburg before? Its supposed to be -2 tomorrow. Its going to be interesting to see how my insurance handles hypothtermia. Cant wait. Great video as well.
Glad you're still enjoying the campaign. Mine unfortunately stopped saving so I could never progress through my 5th or so mission even if I sat down and tried doing it all in one stretch.
Handy little ships the Flower class, not bad for a ship that's basically a conversion of a commercial whaling hull! (the design is a conversion, they were built as warships it's just using a civilian hull design as the base).
Will this be the consistent state of ai subs or will they add a harder difficulty where they use the tactics you would use in SH or wolfpack to engage convoys, where you can usually get a few sinks in before being spotted, and use silent running to no propeller use to avoid you for a while or would that be too long/hard for the gameplay they are aiming for? Edit: also adding the ability to ping for when they do go silent
23:00 I see from the display that 4 ships are listed as doing radar watch in 4 slices of the pie. But there are only two escorts, so who are the other two ships doing radar watch?

Can we take a moment to appreciate this live demonstration of how instrumental radar was for ASW protection of allied convoys? Without it we would be notified about the third U-boat not by a sonar operator calling out new contact at 15:37, but rather by a couple of loud *BOOMS* at the other side of the convoy a couple of minutes later.
Do you ever lose or only show the ones that you've won? Because I can't believe that no torpedoes have ever hit you on this or Silent Hunter 3! Also, it'd be much better to see a close up of the Uboats getting hit. Thanks for posting this.
So these u-boats never give up, or decide to stay deep below 160 meters and slow down below 50 RPM to try to avoid being hit by sonar? Feels weird that every mission ends with all u-boats being destroyed.
Wolfpack is actually doing really well. Another channel covering this game shows what happens if you're not aggressive enough persecuting these u boats - they will fire on allied convoys and you'll start taking causalities.
@@Trades46 That's not my point. My point is that u-boats wouldn't be continuing to attack when actively being hunted by destroyers. They would evade until the escort gave up the chase, then escape the battleground to position themselves somewhere else later. In the game, they barely evade and then try to resurface for another attack when being actively pursued, which is suicidal. They are easy pickings.
To try and get atleast get close to the convoy using there much faster surface speed and sometimes the surface weather conditions are atleast favourable enough to try and surface without getting detected
Taking nothing away from your performance by the AI still doesn't impress me here. Why didn't that third submarine launch its torpedoes at the convoy? Why get so close that its periscope could be seen by the transport and yet not fire? The convoy should have had at least two sips hit while you were chasing Baker imo. The U-Boat game Destroyer AI was far better at hunting you down that these u-boats are at prosecuting an attack. Please tell me they get better because at the moment it feels like a turkey shoot. However it could also mean you are just that good.
...that's the wrong kind of "ships ohoy"! Slightly surprised you evade merchants by turning into their bow. Cutting behind them generates a lot more angles on the bow and their motion takes them out of your path instead of keeping them in it.
I doubt it, if for no other reason than so much of the equipment you use is for sub hunting (no torps, for example); not to mention, against a capital ship you'd probably get sunk quickly. Disguised merchant raiders didn't really operate in the North Atlantic since any targets would be in convoys. But a mission to hunt down and sink a merchant raider would be neat.
@@TheSchultinator Yeah. And by the time I will have the time to play this game, I would hope this game to be updated to have the chance of encountering an enemy cruiser or pocket battleship (adjustable from difficulty settings of course) with the correct survival strategy naturally being to let the other destroyers draw in the capital ships cannon fire and then fire torpedoes as well as missions to hunt down enemy commerce raiders disguising as civilian ships.
Atrocious bad trade for the Germans. Eight U-Boats for one merchant ship in this convoy? They can't win the Battle of the Atlantic like that. Not a chance.
U boat captains aren't suicidal. Wolfpack has been shooting 5in guns and starshells once they appear on the surface lining up for an attack & force them under, and it is hard to plot an attack when you have a DD constantly tracking you on sonar, which is why they're always on the defensive.
@grnmjolnir I feel like he got pretty lucky that charlie or dog didn't manage to engage I suspect for dog it was a matter of moments before that sub took a shot
