  • January 25th, here in Wales, we celebrate "Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen" (St Dwynwen's Day). It is a celebration of love, the Welsh equivalent of Valentine's Day. I have thought much recently about the nature of love. I have no wisdom to offer and have arrived at no conclusions beyond the obvious observation that I guess we all need a "Love Thing".
Joe Satriani is a wonderful guitar player, and often I have read of his thoughts, intentions and meanings behind the music that he writes. I have been unable to uncover his thinking on this beautiful and enigmatic track. I wonder what he had in mind.
I have recently rediscovered my long neglected wah pedal. I confess I have been afraid of it, having no clue how to use it well. So, I decided to try to learn Satriani's "Love Thing". My aim here was never to replicate Satriani's version. There are some excellent videos where great guitar players copy, exactly, with great precision, how Satriani plays this track. Yet they do little to excite me. I wish to hear a guitarist make the song their own. Miles Davis said it well "Anybody can play. The note is only 20 percent. The attitude of the motherf***er who plays it is 80 percent." I aimed to play this in my own way, with my own attitude, whilst also paying due homage to the 20 percent, the correct notes. There are incorrect notes here, some mistakes, plus some deliberate embellishments too.
So, last night I went out with a friend to watch an AC/DC cover band. They were brilliant. We drank quite a few beers. I came home late and thought it would be a real attitude moment if, after a few beers, I were to just plug in my guitar and record a version of this track. I had aimed to play this on my Les Paul yet almost immediately I encountered a rare situation for me - I snapped my E string. So out came my Ibanez Jem. Not a great fan of this guitar and it feels a little unfamiliar to me. Oh well, it was time to just get on with it.
Plugged through my wah, into my Blackstar 10w and then into my macbook where I recorded my efforts in Garageband. I videoed this on my iphone which was attached to a gorillapod. I then synced the recorded audio with the video and decided black and white was a nice effect.
This is alcohol fuelled, and I quite like it. I am not sure I could have improved this even if I were stone cold sober at the time.
    I hope you enjoy this.
